Description

T. 1=. KRUGER. ERASER HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED APR.13,1910. BENEWBD SEPT. 6, 1911.
Patented May 28, 1912.
ENFER@ STATES PATENT @FFQE TRAUGTT PAUL KRUGER, OF lNEW' YORK, N. Y.
FRASER-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application led April 13, 1910, Se1ia1 No. 555,167. Renewed September 6, 1911. Serial No. 648,129.
To all whom t may concern j Be it known that- I, TRAUGOTT P. KRUGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Eraser-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved eraser holder, arranged to accommodate an eraser strip for ink, or one for pencil, or for both, one at each end of the holder, to securely hold the eraser strip in position in the holder, and to per mit of quickly and conveniently adjusting the eraser strip in the holder, to project the strip the desired distance from the end of the holder, to allow a proper and economical use of the eraser strip. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a hollow handle, for the reception of an eraser strip, and a locking and ejecting device mounted on the said handle, near the end thereof and engaging the eraser strip, to lock the same in place in the holder.
A practical embodiment of t-he invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the eraser in use; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the same; Fig. 3 is a like view of the same, showing the locking device in open position and the eraser strip removed; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the eraser on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The handle A, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is made hollow and open at bot-h ends, to accommodate twov eraser strips B and B, of which one is for erasing pencil marks and the other for erasing ink marks, the strips being projected beyond the corresponding ends of the handle A and locked in place therein by locking levers C, located near each end of the handle A. Each locking lever C consists of parallel arms C fulcrumed on a pivot D, preferably in the form of a piece of wire, encircling the handle A and extending in an annular groove thereof, so as to project but little from the surface of the handle A. The arms C of each lever are connected with each other at their free ends by a finger piece C2, and on the fulcrum or pivotal ends of the said arms C 'convenient insertion or removal of a corresponding eraser strip B or B, and when an eraser strip has been inserted a desired distance, then the user swings the lever C into a closed position, whereby the teeth C engage the eraser strip and embed themselves in the same, at the same time drawing the eraser strip inward until the linger piece C2 rests against the outer face of the handle A, thus limiting the swinging mo tion of the lever C.
By the arrangement described, the outer end of the eraser strip B or B may be projected any desired distance from the end of the hollow handle A, to permit of conveniently using the eraser for erasing purposes. Vhen the projecting end of the eraser strip has become too small for proper erasing purposes, then the operator takes hold of the linger piece C2 and swings the same outwardly, and in doing so the teeth Cs push the eraser strip B or B outward, to permit the user to conveniently take hold of the outer end of the said strip, to draw the latter farther outward in the hollow handle A. When this has been done, the lever C is again swung into closed position, whereby the eraser strip is drawn a short distance inward, to project the outer end thereof the desired distance from the corresponding end of the hollow handleA.
It is understood that the harder the pressure against the outer end of the eraser strip when using the device, the tighter the lever C will be drawn into closed position, to insure a very secure and rm hold of the eraser strip in the hollow handle A.
The eraser holder shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, is composed of but few parts, and assembled so as not to become disconnected and loose. It will further be understood that by the arrangement described each eraser strip can be used up almost to the very inner end, and hence renders the device economical in the use of the eraser material used for the purpose. It will also be seen thata new eraser strip can be readily placed in position in the holder whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A device of the character specified, comprising a tubular holder provided with spaced substantially parallel longitudinal slots near one end, a ring encircling the holder at said end and passing transversely of the slots, the outer face of the holder bei ing annularly grooved to receive the ring, a lever pivoted on the ring,` in each of the slots, each of the said levers having a plurality of teeth extending through the slots for the purpose specified, and a handle for.
each lever outside of the slots, the handles being` connected with each other, the handle and the teeth of each lever being at substantially a right angle with respectv to each other, so that when the teeth are in engagenient with the eraser the handles will lie flat on the outer face of the holder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing` witnesses.
