IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-PENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,633, dated AMay 5, 1874 application filed April 22, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. TINNEY, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the con struction of an ink-reservoir, with a smoothly-rounded base, upon which it moves, and provided with a vent and an ink-feeder5 and also with a pen holder attached thereto at such an angle that the point of the pen shall be a shade lower than the base of the reservoir, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, showing the mode of using the same; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

A represents my ink-reservoir, made of thin sheet metal, hard rubber, or any other suitable material, and of any dimensions desired. The bottom of this reservoir is made concave on the under side, and the side edges B B are rounded smoothly, forming the base upon which the reservoir moves. At the front end of the reservoir near the base is a spout, C, extending forward a suitable distance, and which forms the ink-feeder. At the rear end, on top of the reservoir, is an inlet, a, for the admission of ink into the reservoir, which inlet is closed by a suitable screw-plug or screwcap, D; and packing may be introduced under the same to make it perfectly tight. In front of the inlet a, in the top of the reservoir, is a vent orair-hole, b, in which is inserted a small plug, d. This plug is to be loosened or partially removed when the device is in operation, so as to admit sufficient air to cause the ink to feed properly; but when the device is not in use this plug is to be inserted perfectly air tight, which will allow of the device being carried in the pocket with perfect safety. In the center of the upper front edge of the reservoir is permanently attached a short pen-holder, G, which is set at such an angle that when the pen is properly inserted therein the point of the pen will be only a shade lower than the base of the reservoir, and the end of the feeder or spout C will be close to the inner concave surface of the pen at or near the slot therein. This device is to rest 011 the paper, and be conveniently grasped by the fingers, and the writing can be continued Without the slightest intermission until the reservoir becomes empty. The device is simple in construction, cheap, and not liable to get out of order; and it is. handy to be carried about where needed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimV as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The reservoir A, the bottom being made concave, and the side edges rounded to form a base, upon which the reservoir moves, and provided with a pen-holder, Gr, and spout C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
