Description

SLATB-PBNGIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER.
@te flgehule tefrrrth tu im tiges tnfs ntent mit mating putt nf the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. H. ALCORN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Slate-Pencil Sharpener and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference lbeing had to the'accompan'ying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which.-
Figure 1 represents a. front view, partly in section, of my invention.
Figure 2 is a. transverse section of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line :v as, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view, showing a modification of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new attachment to school-slates, and consists in an arrangement for holding and sharpening slate-pencils, which is fixed to the slate-frame so as to form part of the'same. The holder is so made that it will be adapted to pencils of various diameters, while the sharpening device is made substantia1, and cannotbe easily worn out.
A represents the frame of a school-slate. To its side or edge is secured, by means ofscrews a or otherwise, a metal or other plate, B, which appears S-shaped in cross-section, as shown in fig. 2. Lugs b b project from thesides or ends of this plate, and are perforated to allow the screws a to pass through them, or a portion of the plate itself is perforated for that purpose. That portion of the plate which appearsl convex from the out* side forms a hollow chamber' open at both ends for holding the pencil. A spring, 0is arranged in it to press the pencil against the opposite side, as seen in fig. l. By means of this spring the holder will be able to hold all pencils that are not larger than the opening in the holder. The concave outer side c of the plate B is corrugated or roughencd so that the point of the pencil may be sharpened by drawing it over the thus prepared surface. This concave ronghened surface c may be formed on the Surface of the holder,l as shown in iig. 3. The plate B may' be made of any suitable material, and also the slate-frame A can be made of suitable form or materiali This invention will be found of great value in schools, as the pencils will not be so frequently lost or brolrein` a proper receptacle for them being provided.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-F 1. Providing a slate-frame with a combined slate-pencil holder and Sharpener, for the purpose set-forth. 2. The semi-tubular plate B, when provided with oneo'r more lugs E, or their equivalents, and with a spring, C, and with a corrugated surl'aerne, all as setforth.'
W. H. ALCORN.
