UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. HOMER TREGO, 0F TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINATION OF, BLOTTER, PAPER-WEIGHT, RULE, CUTTER, AND SQUARE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 50,404, dated October l0, 1865.
.To all whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, A. HOMER TEEeo, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State ot' New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Combined Blotter, Paper-Weight, Paper-Cutter, Ruler, Rule, Square, and Pen-NViper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- -Figure l is a plan or top view of the device; and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the device, taken in the line x, Fig. 1.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in combining several much-used articles of stationary in one neat device, each part ofthe same being constructed substantially as hereinafter described.
To enable others to understand my inven- `;ion, I will proceed to describe it.
The principal parts of the device are two plates, A B. The plate A answers for a bedplate, over the under side or face of which the blottingpaper is placed, and its several .sides brought up and turned over raised edges Z) on the top of the said bed-plate. The plate B answers the purpose of a clamp Jfor holding the blotting-paper from getting out ot' place, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2.
screw-rod, a, is secured rigidly in the plate A, in the center thereof, and a hole is made through the plate B to allow it to come through, and the base of a receptacle, C, for pt J, stamps, &c., is tted to screw on the se lrod, for the purpose of keeping the two pi. `tes secured together. This receptacle C is provided with a lid, c, and the whole device is ornamental, and the cup is handy as areceptacle for stamps, pens, Src.
Theplate B has its top ornamented by designs in metal of an extension-pencil, d, and a common pencil, e, on the one end, and apen, f, and an eraser, g, on the other. The points of the two pencils d e and the pen f extend out beyond the corners of the said plate B, and to them there is attached a metallic strip, D. This metallic strip D is graduated, as a rule, by which to measure. It serves also as a ruler 4by which to guide the pen or pencil in drawing straight lines, and a groove, 7c, is provided along its entire length, near its bottom edge, for catching any ink which may run from the pen when such article is used for ruling lines. The strips have their bot tom edges made straight and sharp, so that when the device is turned over on one side, and the thumb pressed on a knob. t', on the plate, a piece of paper can be as quiekly and accurately torn as it could be done with an ordinary tin or metal paper-cutter; and by reason of the strips D passing around two sides of the plate B a square is produced, the angles or legs of which can be made as accurately as desired.
E is a spring-plate, secured to the rod a in such a manner that its outer end will retain a piece of sponge or other substance on which to wipe the pen when done writing.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I provide- First, a level snrt'ace covered with blottingpaper, which latter can be removed and new paper inserted quickly and readily, and this I consider superior to the rolling blotter now in use.
Second, I provide a paper-weight of neat appearance.
Third, I provide a ruler by which to guide the pen or pencil in ruling, provision being made for catching the ink in the former case.
Fourth, I provide a rule, graduated as iinely as desired, by which to measure, which is an article needed 0n every writing-table.
Fifth, I provide a papeucutter which can be used as eifectually as any cutter (having an edge by which to tear the paper) now in use.
Sixth, I provide a pen-wiper which may consist ot' a moist sponge or other proper absorbent substance, the sanne being held on top ot the device, and therefore handy for use.
Seventh, I provide a receptacle in which to place stamps, 86e., the same forming a knob by which to lift the article.
Eighth, I also provide a square by securing the metallic strips to the sides of the plate B, which square can be used for the ordinary purposes. f
This device, as a whole, is neat and appropriate, and the design on the top thereof is characteristic of its use.
The article may be made very ornamental,
and the expense of the combined article is very little in comparison to buying all the articles it represents separately.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The plates A and B, in combination with each other, so arranged that a piece of blotting-paper may be clamped over a level surface, as shown and described.
2. The metallic strips D, in combination with the plate B, substantially as and for the purposes herein mentioned.
