ATTACHMENT FOR WBETING INSTRUMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed September 17, 1913. Serial No. 780,285.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY W. GRAFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Writing Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide an attachment for writing instruments, particularly adaptable for persons having what is known as writers cramp, and whereby the pen holder can be more readily held in writing position by the user.
It is well known that a large number of people are troubled with what is known as writers cramp and which ailiiction prevents persons from properly using a writing instrument such as a pen or pencil, in order to produce legible result, the fault being mostly due to the fact that the persons having the mentioned affliction cannot steady their hands suiiiciently for writing, thus causing the writing instrument to wabble and produce unintelligible writing.
My invention contemplates a device which can be quickly and conveniently attached to a pen holder or pencil and whereby, when the device is grasped after being applied to one of the mentioned writing instruments, the writer will have a steadier grip upon the writing instrument so that the nib or pointed end of the pencil will be held in more direct contact with the paper to permit the user to write a legible hand.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the attachment applied to a pen holder and which is shown in side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View taken on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a pen holder 10 and an attachment 11 for the pen holder 10, the said attachment consisting more particularly of a body 12 provided with a longitudinal tapered opening 13, through which the pen holder 10 is adapted to pass in order to frictionallv hold the body 12 in engagement with tlie pen holder, the said body being preferably made of cork or some other material which will provide a convenient and comfortable grip and also having a horizontal transverse opening in a lower depending portion 15 of the body so that a weight 16, preferably consisting of a piece or strip of lead, can be readily arranged to lie within the transverse opening 1 1-, as shown.
It will. be apparent from the foregoing description and from the disclosure in the views that when my attachment has been applied to a writing instrument such as the pen holder 10 and the same is gripped in the writing hand of the user, the weight 16 positioned on the depending portion 1.5 of the body 12 will tend to hold the usual nib of the pen holder in a more direct contact with the paper and also tend to steady the pen holder so that the writer can more readily write legibly.
As stated heretofore, my device is particularly adaptable for use by persons afflicted with writers cramp and which, in many instances, can only be overcome for the purpose of writing, by providing a substantial grip for the hand, on the writing instrument and further providing a means for steadying the writing instrument so that the hand of the user can more accurately guide the writing end of the writing instrument over the paper.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for writing instruments comprising a body provided with an opening through which the writing instrument is adapted to extend to support the body thereon, with the said body having a depending portion adapted to lie below the plane of the instrument and provided with an opening, and a weight arranged in the last mentioned opening and adapted to lie below the longitudinal plane of the said writing instrument.
2. In an attachment for Writing instruthe instrument to extend transversely to the 10 ments, a body encircling the Writing insaid body. strument, and a Weight on the body and ex- In testimony whereof I affix my signature telndingf transversely to the longitudinal in presence of two Witnesses.

3. In an attachment for Writing instru- HELRY GRAFF ments, a body supported on the instrument Witnesses: and provided With a transverse slot, and a GEORGE E. TRIER, Weight lying in the slot and to one side of JOHN OERTHER;
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents emit-by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. G.
