HOLDER r03 WRITINGIMPLEMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. ay 20,1919.
Application filed ctober 19,-1918. Serial No.'2*58,853. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN W. FERREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Writing Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in holders for writing implements, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of'this general character which may bereadily applied to the forefinger of a hand in order to eflect a writing operation.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a sleeve or thimble adapted to be applied to the digit of a hand, preferably a forefinger, and wherein said sleeve or thimble is provided with a laterally directed member with which may be engaged a suitable writing implement such as a pen point or pencil.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a holder constructed in. accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the coacting hand being indicated by dotted lines; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the lower portion of my improved holder with the writing implement omitted.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated sleeve or thimble split longitudinally, and which is adapted to have inserted therein the digit, preferably the forefinger, of a hand.
Extending laterally from one end portion of the sleeve or thimble 1 and preferably at a point substantially diametrically opposed to the split 2 thereof, is a plate 3. The plate 3 is returned upon itself as at 4: to aiford a pair of spring jaws suiiiciently spaced apart to produce a socket in which the butt portion of a pen nib or point P is adapted to be inserted. -As is clearly indicated in Fig. 1, it is preferred that the longitudinal axes of the jaws 4: be so inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve'or thimble 1 to bring the writing end of the nib'or point in advance and at substantially the axial center of the sleeve or-thimble -1 The return portion 1 is continued as at 5 "to aflo'rd a supplemental split sleeve or socket into which is adapted to be inserted an end portion of a lead pencil or other writing implement so that my improved holder may be employed in connection with marking or writing implements of different characters. 6 denotes a plate preferably concavo-convex in form secured to the sleeve or thimble 1 at a point in close proximity to the plate 3. The concave face of the plate 6 is outwardly directed so that the plate 6 serves as a convenient rest for the thumb so that a writing operation in connection with my improved holder may be materially facilitated.
7 denotes a second plate secured to the sleeve or thimble 1 and which plate is preferably concavo'convex in form. This plate 7 is adapted to be engaged by the outer end portion of the middle finger, in practice the thumb in contact with the plate 6 and the middle finger in contact with the plate 7 the device may be held more firmly and thereby result in the writing being much easier with the muscular movements absolutely perfect and which is due to the fact that the thumb pushes from the writer and the middle finger pulls toward the writer.
It is also to be noted that in the present embodiment of my invention the plate 3 is arranged at the left side of the sleeve or thimble 1 for a reason which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains.
F rom the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of-the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A holder of the class described comprising a sleeve adapted to receive a digit of a hand, a laterally directed plate carried by the sleeve, said plate being returned upon itself to afford resilient jaws between which is adapted to be inserted an end portion of a marking implement, said return portion being extended to afford a socket to receive a second marking implement.
2. A holder of the class described comprising a sleeve adapted to receive a digit of a hand, a laterally directed plate carried by the sleeve, said plate being returned upon to the split.
3. A holder of the class described, comprising a sleeve adapted to receive a digit of a hand, and a laterally directed plate carried by the sleeve, said plate being provided with a plurality of sockets, each of said sockets being adapted to receive a marking implement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. FERREE.
