TOOTHBRUSH.

Application led March 3, 1927. Serial No. 172,407.

My invention relates to tooth brushes of the type in which the handle of then brush is detachable from the brush' body and more particularly to improvements in the type of brush disclosed in the French patent to George Jequierof June 23,1926 No. 606,938.

One of the objectsv of thev invention is to provide a brush of such a character with means for withdrawing the handle attaching means within the handle when said handle is detached from the -brushbody.

My invention is further comprised in certain novel forms, construction, and combination of parts, the objects of which are to provide more reliable devices for the purposes stated, all of which will subsequently be fully described and claimed.

Fig. 4 shows a second constructional embodiment of the invention, partly in section.

Referring to the drawings, the tooth brush is constituted by the bristle head 1 to which is attached the handle 2 by means of the sleeve 3.

The bristle head isprovided at one end with an internally screw threaded hole 4, into which is adapted to screw the externally screw threaded rod 5 inserted at its other extremity into the handle 2.

The sleeve 3 is provided at the end with a recessed or concave portion 6 adapted to seat .itself against the rounded end of the.

bristle head .1.A .This sleeve is provided with an axial erforation and can slide with respect to t e rod 5. It is furnished with a circular cavity 7 in which is ,located a spring 8. This spring is designed to push against the sleeve 3 so as to kee it in its extreme position limited by the co lar 9 fixed to rod 5.

Fig. 3 shows the position taken up by the sleeve 3 at the moment when the lextremity of the screw threaded rod 5 just enters into the internally screw threaded portion 4. The recessed or concave portion 6 of the sleeve 3 is ah-eady located against the rounded extremit of the bristle head 1. In this position, t e spring 8 is stressed. On screwin the handle 2, the sleeve 3 only slides a ong the rod 5 without turning, the spring 8 becoming further stressed holds fast the sleeve 3 in its initial position as .shown at Fig.- 2. It will be seen that the attachment of the bristle head l-to the handle. 2 is eiected in a very simple manner vhilst holding the tooth brush absolutely in me. v

According to Fig. 4, the attachment of the brush body 1 to the handle 2 is effected by means of a sleeve 3 which may or may not be of metal sliding again onthe screw threaded rod 5. However, the extreme end of this sleeve is flat and in section it corresponds exactly with that of the extremity of the bristle head 1. This latter is provided with two perforations 10 in which are adapted to engage p ins 11 screwed into I the sleeve 3.

When the handle 2 is removed, the spring` the direction of the axis and to screw the rod 5 into the screw threaded hole 4.

What I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent in the United States of America 1s:-

1. A .tooth brush of the type described comprising, in combination, a bristle head, a detachablel handle for said bristle head, a threaded member fixed in said handle, a set of corresponding threads carried by said bristle head, a sleeve slidablymounted on said threaded member and vmeans or'causing said sleeve to cover said threaded member when said handle is detached from said bristle head.

2. A tooth brush of the t pe described comprising, in combination, a ristle head, a

detachable handle for said bristle headya threaded member fixed in said handle, a set of corresponding threads carried by said bristle head, a tei-rule slidably mounted on said'threaded member, a spring within said sleeveffor causing said sleeve to cover said threaded member when said handle is detached from said bristle head and a stop for limiting the movement of said sleeve under the action of said spring.

3. A tooth brush of the type described comprising, in combination, a bristle head, a detachable handle for said bristle head, a threaded member fixed in said handle, a set of corresponding threads carried by said bristle head, a ferrule slidably mounted on said threaded member, a spring Within said sleeve for causing said sleeve to cover -said threaded member when said handle is detached from said bristle head, a collar on said threaded member cooperating with said sleeve for limiting the movement of said sleeve under the action of said spring and means on said sleeve cooperating with said bristle head for preventing movement of said sleeve during attaching of said handle.

4. A toothbrush of the type described comprising, in combination, a bristle head, a detachable handle for said bristle head, a

15 threaded member fixed in said handle, a set of corresponding threads carried by said bristle head, a ferrule slidably mounted on said threaded member, a spring within said sleeve for causing said sleeve to cover said threaded member when said handle is detached from said bristle head, a stop for limiting the movement of said sleeve under.

the action of said spring and a concave recess formed in said sleeve for receiving the extremity of said bristle head whereby movement of said sleeve during attaching of saidhandle is prevented.
