Description
1939. J. A. MIETTUNEN SHAVING BRUSH Filed Oct. 28, 1937 Patented Jan. 31, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a shaving brush. It is primarily aimed to provide a novel construction which will contain the cream or shaving material in a reservoir within the handle. subject to feeding therefrom to the brush bristles by the action of a slidable plunger, the latter being capableof suitable fastening against accidental removal.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an. operative embodiment.
In said drawing:-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved brush;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line ll of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 with the parts in pin releasing position; and
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional View through the pin-securing ring.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, a body or handle is provided at It which is hollow to form a reservoir ll adapted to contain shaving cream or any equivalent. The bottom wall of said reservoir is preferably inclined as shown at H and leads to an outlet or discharge passage l3 communicating with bristles at It. Said handle I!) has a reduced portion l5 and a stem 16 depending therefrom, through both of which said passageway I3 is provided. The bristles M are secured in any suitable manner as by gluing, rubber setting or the like around the stem l6 and are further secured through the aid of a ring or ferrule ll, surrounding the upper ends of the bristles and the portion l5.
Operable within the reservoir H is a slidable plunger l8 having a leather or other flexible gasket at l9. secured thereto as at 20, which is designed to wipe the wall of reservoir M to contact and extrude the shaving cream or the like.
Said plunger l8 has a marginal flange M at the top and has a longitudinal groove 22 in its periphery. Said groove or slot 22 terminates short of each end of the plunger and a pin 23 extends into the same and prevents accidental detachment of the plunger from the handle or body Ill.
As the shaving cream or the like in reservoir M tends to harden when exposed to the air, a stopper member or plug is provided at 30, having a reduced stem 3i which extends removably into the passageway l3.
Presuming operation of the device, the stopper or plug 3|] is removed. Thereupon the body is grasped in one hand, with a finger engaging the plunger 2i and pressing against it so 'as to express the shaving cream therefrom through the passage I3 and onto the bristles, the latter being wet, so that a lather will be produced.
It will be understood that ring 2'1! is locked in place by pin 23 since the spring 29 is normally in the narrower portion of the slot or groove 25 and thereby compressed so as to exert friction on the ring and on the body, minimizing danger of accidental detachment of the ring. However, as above stated, when it is desired to refill reservoir l l, the ring 21! is moved to the left from the position of Figure 4 to that of Figure 5, and the tension of the spring 29,'withdraws the pin 23 through opening 22 in the body ill and from groove 22 so that the plunger can be removed for refilling of the reservoir M.
It is clear that the body Ml, ferrule Ill, plunger l8 and ring 21 may be made of any desired material such as Bakelite, rubber, Celluloid, metal, etc., and that element 20 may be of brass so as to avoid an article capable of rusting.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:--
1. A brush of the class described having a body portion constituting a handle, said body portion having a reservoir and an outlet passage leading therefrom, bristles in communication with the outlet passage, a plunger slidably movable in the said reservoir, said plunger having a slot extending longitudinally thereof, a removable. member on the body extending through the bodyand ill lid
into said slot and an element embracing the body and dispiaceably interfltted with said member.
2. A brush of the class described having a body portion constituting a handle, said body portion having a reservoir and an outlet passage leading therefrom, bristles in communication with the outlet passage, a plunger slidably movable in the said reservoir, said plunger having an elongated peripheral slot, said body having a hole therethrough.,a ring disposed about the body havinga slot provided with an entrance, and a. pin in said slots and opening positioned by the ring.
3. A brush of the class described having a body portion constituting a handle, said body portion having a reservoir and an outlet passage lead- JOHN A. MIE'I'I'UNEN.
