ERASER FOR LEAD-PENCILS.
Application filed January 5, 1914.
To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, AXEL IIiLsTRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of `Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers for Lead-Pencils; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in erasers and more particularly to those. which are primarily adapted for use in connection with the endof a pencil.
The primary object of the invention is to produce a simply constructed device of this character having means whereby when the eraser has worn a considerable extent, the same may be further projected from its retaining sleeve so that a new working area is provided. i
A secondary object is to provide means for automatically securing the eraser in any one of its adjusted positions. j l
With the'above objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features-of construction .and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil showing my improved -eraser applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinal section lthereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the eraserhaving been projected to its greatest extent; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the element to which the eraser is secured and which is slidably mounted within the guide sleeve; and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view thereof.,
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my improved attachment in the form of a tubular guide 1 having a longitudinal slot 2 in its outermost portion, a plurality of notches 3 opening into said slot and thus forming teeth 4. rIlle inner end of the tubularguide 1 is adapted to fit snugly over the inactive end of a pencil I and is secured in place by means of studs 5 struck inwardly from the inner end of said guide. yIhe outer l. end of the guide 1 is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending studs 6 for a purpose to appear.

said spring being under longitudinal and torsional tension and. having its lower end seated in a notch 14 formed in the adjacent end of the pencil I. With the spring thus arranged, the tendency thereof is to rotate the plate 7 and cause its neck 8 to vengage one of the notches 3 which communicate with the slot A2. When however, the eraser l1 is turned to disengage the neck 8 from one of said notches, the longitudinal tension of the spring will be exerted and the plate 7 and the eraser 11 will be projected beyond the outer end of the guide `1 a suitabledistance, after which the eraser may be released and the torsional tension of the spring 13 will again engage the neck 8 with one of tbe notches 3.
When the major part of the eraser 11 has been used, it.will be understood that the plate 7 will stand beneath the studs 6 at the top of the guide l, and through the 'Ihe inner face of the plate 7 is notched above mentioned means, the neck 8 will be seated in the uppermost notch 3. When in. .this posit-ion the corners 7 of the plate 7 will lie directlybeneath said studs. When now it is desired to remove the plate 7 for the purpose of applying a new eraser, it is absolutely necessary to turn said plate so that its neck rests within the upper end of the slot 2, which up-per end is enlarged as at 2 for this purpose. .'Ihis action, when imparted to the plate 7, will turn the corners 7 of the plate to such an extent as to bring them out of contact with the studs 6. The ent-ire plate may now be rocked as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 upon which action the neck 8 and the knob 9 will be disengaged frorn the slot 2 and the upper notch 3 and thus the plate may be readily removed i'or the above mentioned purpose.
From the above described construction, it will be seen that I have produced a very simple and eiiicient attachment which may be applied to pencils oit ordinary construction and which will be very useful. It is to be understood however, that vI do not ico Wish to be limited to the application of my invention to a pencil since it Will be obvious that it would operate to equal advantage when secured to any suitable form. of handle,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as nev7 and desire to secure by Le;- ters-Patent is:

A device of the character described comprising a tubular guide formed with.. a longitudinal slot and a plurality of transverse notches 'opening1 into said slot, a. substantially polygonal plate slidable Within said guide, an integral neck. on one corner of said plate, said neck passing through said slot, an operating head formed on the outer end of said neclr, a cylindrical eraser resting on said plate, integral tongs formed on the edges of said plate and bent into the sides of said eraser, a coil spring for forcing said plate normally outward and apln" rality or projections struck inwardly from the free end of said guide for limiting the outward movement of said platen 2.
