Description

L, o. MILLS. WICK LIFTER FOR TORCHES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 16, 1912.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
LOUIS C. MILLS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
WICK-LIF'IER FOR TORCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18,1913.
Application filed July 16, 1912. Serial No. 709,817.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis C. MILLS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful lVick-Lifter for Torches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a torch provided with a wick lifting device, and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel features and in the novel` and improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts as `will be apparent from the description and claim which follow hereinafter. Y
Objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved device of the class specified which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture and use, strong and durable, convenient and easy to manipu late, and effective in action.
Other objects and the advantages of the in vention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description of the preferred form of construction embodying the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a partly broken and sectional side view of the device applied to a torch; Fig. 2 is a front view of one of the lifting members on the torch; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 23MB of Fig. 1, and Fig. i is a perspective view of parts of the lifting member in detached relation.
lhe tank 5 for containing oil or the like 6 may have screwed thereon a suitable hollow tting 7 having thereon the preferably upwardly tapering spout 8 through which the preferably cylindrical wick 9 passes from the interior of the tank On the spout 8 are arranged one or more, preferably two, wick lifting members 4C. The spout 8 may be formed with substantially oppositely disposed outwardly pressed portions 'l0 to l provide recesses 11 on the interior thereof.
In the recesses 11 are movably fitted plates 12 having thereon lugs or guides 13 which extend outwardly through slots or guido ways 14 in the outwardly pressed portions 10. The guides 13 may have thereon split extensions 15 for connecting with the guides 13 suitable springs 1G and finger pieces 17.
As shown, the springs 16 may be bow-shaped' and arranged to have the end portions thereof bearing against the exterior' of the spout 8 and they may be provided with substantially central openings 1S through which the extensions 15 may pass. r1`he finger' pieces 17 may be provided with openings 19 through which the extensions 15 may be passed and the split portions 20 and 21 of the extensions 15 may then be bent into en gagement with the finger pieces 17 to secure them and the springs 1G in position on the guides 18. One end portion 22 of the finger pieces 17 may be suitably curved outwardly to facilitate manipulation of the device.
From the foregoing it will be understood that in use the wick 9 may be raised through the spout 8 by pressing inwardly with the fingers on the lifting members 4t to move the plates 12 into clamping engagement with the wick E) whereupon the plates 12 may be moved upwardly to lift the wick 9. W hen the lifting members fl. are released by the lingers the springs 1G act to move the plates- 12 back into the recesses 11 and the plates 12 may then be moved downwardly lin the recesses 11 by pressing downwardly on the finger pieces 17.
lVhile one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied has been particularly illustrated and described, there are many changes and modifications thereof that will readily occur to those skilled in the art, wherefore, the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A torch provided with an upwardly tapering spout formed with substantially oppositely disposed outwardly pressed portions to provide recesses in the interiorl thereof, plates movably fitted in the recesses and having thereon guides provided with split extensions and extending outwardly through guideways in the outwardly pressed portions, substantially bow-shaped springs arranged to ha ve the end portions thereof bearing slidably against the exterior of the spout and provided with substantially central openings through which the extensions pass, finger pieces having one end portion thereof curved outwardly and provided with openings through which the extensions pass, two subscribing vv'vitnesses at Los Angeles, the split portions of said' extensions being county of Los Angeles, State of California, bent into engagement with the finger pieces this 9th day of July A. D. 1912.
to secure them and the springs in position g LOUIS C. MILLS. 5 on the guides, substantially as setforth. Witnesses:
In testimony whereof, I have signed my FRED A. MANSFIELD, naine to this specification in the presence of ALEX. H. LIDDERs.
