TAILOR'S MARKING DEVICE Filed Feb. 24, 1959 INVENTOR JOHN A. ERICSGN ELMER M. BINS BY ATTOR EY United States Patent TAILORS MARKING DEVICE John A. Ericson, 732 Market St., and Elmer M. Bins, 272 Ewing Road, both of Youngstown, Ohio Filed Feb. 24, 1959, Ser. No. 795,043
1 Claim. (Cl. 33-41) The present invention relates to marking devices in general and more particularly to an improved tailors marking device.
As will be understood by those skilled in the sewing and tailoring art, in the making of articles from material in accordance with a pattern it is necessary to mark one or more thicknesses of the material in exact accordance with the markings on the pattern. The pattern usually comprises a properly marked piece of transparent or translucent paper, such as onion-skin for example. Heretofore, serrated tracing wheels and carbon paper have been used to transfer the markings on the pattern to the material. When such prior art apparatus and methods are employed it is usually only possible to mark one thickness of, material and the tracing operation is not only time consuming but also is difficult to complete with a high degree of accuracy.
In view of the above, it will be seen that the need exists for an improved tailors marking device and it is the primary or ultimate object of the present invention to provide such apparatus.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tailors marking device which is adapted to very accurately and legibly mark two thicknesses of the material being worked in exact accordance with the markings on the pattern.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tailors marking device which embodies an indicator or pointer means adapted to engage and follow the markings on the pattern whereby the material is marked in exact accordance therewith.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a tailors marking device which embodies improved holders for the marking means, such as pieces of tailors chalk, for example. As will be hereinafter more fully explained, the holders are molded or otherwise formed from any suitable plastic material and are nestingly and frictionally received over the forward end portions of the elongated U-shaped body portion.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tailors marking device which is characterized by its extreme simplicity in manufacture, assembly and use. Further, the tailors marking device of the present invention is characterized by its ruggedness and its stability whereby two thicknesses of material may be marked simultaneously in exact accordance with respect to each other and with respect to the pattern.
The above, as well as other objects and advantages of the present invention, will become more fully apparent upon consideration of the following specification and accompanying drawing wherein there is disclosed a preferred illustrated embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the use of a tailors marking device constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the tailors marking device shown in Figure 1;

ice
Figure 3 is a partial plan view of the apparatus shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a front end view of the apparatus depicted in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates generally an improved tailors marking service constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention. This marking device is adapted for use in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described to simultaneously mark two layers of material 11 and 12 in exact accordance with markings 13 on a pattern 14. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, the pattern 14 usually comprises thin onion-skin having the markings 13imprinted thereon.
The tailors marking device 10 comprises a generally elongated U-shaped body member 15 which defines a. pair of vertically spaced and generally parallel elongated reaches 16 and 17. The U-shaped body member 15 is formed from strip metal, for example, whereby the same is resilient in order that the front end portions of the reaches 16 and 17 can be pressed together by the user. The reaches 16 and 17 are elongated so that the layers of material 11 and 12 may be inserted between these reaches for a considerable distance to facilitate marking thereof. Slidably received over the lower reach 17 of the U-shaped body member 15 is a channel 18 which strengthens and adds rigidity to the body member whereby the lower reach 17 is always disposed in aligned parallel relation with respect to the upper reach 16. This allows the two layers of material 11 and 12 to be marked in exact accordance with respect to each other.
Nestingly received and carried on the front end portion of each of the reaches 16 and 17 is a holder 19. Each of the holders 19 is generally L-shaped in side elevation as shown in Figure 2 and is provided with a generally rectangular recess 20 adjacent the rear end thereof. This recess is adapted to nestingly and frictionally receive the forward end portion of the reach associated therewith. The forward end of the L-shaped holder 19 has a vertically extending and generally rectangular aperture 21 therein into which is adapted to be inserted a piece of tailors marking chalk 22. The holder 19 is molded or otherwise formed from any well-known plastic composition whereby the same has a desired degree of resiliency and is adapted to be frictionally received on the forward end portion of the reach associated therewith and to frictionally retain the tailors marking chalk 22.
When both of the holders 19 are assembled on the forward end portions of the reaches 16 and 17 and the pieces of chalk 22 are inserted in the apertures 21 it will be observed that the pieces of chalk 22 are disposed adjacent to but spaced vertically from each other. In the use of the tailors marking device the two layers of material are inserted between the pieces of chalk 22 and the reaches 16 and 17 of the U-shaped body portion. The user applies a force intermediate the ends of the reaches 16 and 17 which causes the pieces of chalk 22 to engage the opposite surfaces of the layers of material 11 and 12. By efiecting relative movement between the marking device and the layers of material, the layers of material are marked with chalk lines on opposite sides thereof. The elongated channel 18 prevents transverse movement of the reaches 16 and 17 with respect to each other whereby the two layers of material are marked in exact accordance with respect to each other.
It is, of course, necessary to mark the layers of material in accordance with the markings on the pattern and to accomplish this we provide an indicator23. The indicator 23 comprises a thin spring-like strip of metal which is generally co-extensive with the upper reach 16. The indicator 23 is attached to the reach 16 adjacent the rear end portion thereof by Welding or any other convenient attachment means. The indicator 23 is bowed upwardly at 24 intermediate its ends whereby the same clears the holder 19, carried by the reach 16. The extreme forward end portion 25 of the indicator 23 is turned upwardly so that the thin pattern is adapted to be slidably received thereunder. The extreme forward edge of the indicator 23 terminates at a point directly over the vertically aligned apertures 21 in the holders 19. The arrangement is such that the extreme forward edge of the indicator 23 moves in exact accordance with the lines being traced on the layers of material.
In the use of the indicator 23 the pattern 14 is inserted between the indicator 23 and the upper reach 16. The extreme forward edge of the indicator 23 is made to follow the markings which are to be transferred to the layers of material and in this manner the layers of material are marked in exact accordance with the markings on the pattern. The upturned front end portion 25 of the indicator 23 allows the relatively flimsy pattern to be inserted easily thereunder without tearing or mutilating the same.
The marking device of the present invention will normally be held intermediate the endsthereof in one hand of the user with the thumb resting on top of the indicator 23 whereby the. pieces of chalk 22 are pressed into contact with the layers of material while the pattern is loosely engaged between the indicator 23 and the upper reach 16. The other hand of the user would normally be employed to maintain the pattern in proper position with respect to the layers of material and to move the layers of material and pattern relative to the tailors marking device.
It will thus be seen that the objects initially set forth have been accomplished. Although there has been disclosed an illustrated embodiment of the invention it should be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from the clear teachings thereof. Accordingly, reference should be had to the following appended claims in determining the true scope and intent of the invention.
