Description

June 24, 1930. L ROCHAT l l .19.766,308
PUNGHING'DEVIGE f Filed Aug. 3, 1929 mvEN'roR:
WITNESS* WM ATTORNEY LOUIS nocrie'r, or NEW YORK, iur.
PUNCHING' DEVCE Application filed August 3, 1929. Serial No. 383,256.
This invention relates to punching devices and has particular reference to a punching instrument which is removably ttachable to a supporting article.
One of the objects of the invention is to systematize the method of punching tickets, such as are used in restaurants and like places, by providing one or more punches in certain locations, with a View to obviating the necessity of looking for a punch when an attendant wishes to register the amount of a purchase on a ticket.
Another object of the invention is the positioning of a punching device at a favorable angle, so that a ticket carrying meinbers thereon may be readily placed in the device by the fingers of one hand of an attendant, without necessitating previous manipulation of the device, the latter being then ready for operation by the fingers of the same hand for punching one of the numbers to indicate the amount of a purchase.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device oi"- the character described with a base stud or die member and a top cooperating member having an aperture therein for visibly displaying therethrough a number on a ticket to be punched, so as to prevent liability to making errors by punching a ticket distant from the required number.
lVith these and other objects in View, the invention resides iii certain novel constructional features, the essential charactertistics ot which, hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in theA appended claims, are illustrated in the accompanying drawing iii which: f
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my iinproved punching device with a ticket positioiied therein.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken centrally thereof.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of F iguie 1.
Figure il is a. perspective view of a slightly modiiied forni of the invention.
Referring particularly to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates the punching device in its entirety, which includes a base plate 11, the opposite ends of which are provided tures 12 with like aperto accommodate screws 13 oi' the like for attaching the device to any surface 14, such as a counter or table.
ing integral with said walls, sion 17 of the while an eXtenplatforni projects beyond the edge oi' the support 14. On slightly loosening the screws 13 the plate is movable in fore and aft directions for adjusting the position of the device 10 relative to the edge of said support.
The platform 16 has a male die member or stud 18 rigidly mounted thereon, while a resilient strip 19 of suitable metal, which has an aperture 2O therein in register with said stud, is
attached to the front of the platform 16, as'by rivets 17, there being also a leaf spring said rivets.
as an auXili 21 attached to the platform by This leaf spring, which serves ary means Jfor returning the strip 19 to its original position, after the latter has been depressed to showing a number from punch a disk a ticket 22, is
provided with a longitudinally elongated aperture 23 to allow ment of said ing operation.
of freedom of moveleaf spring during the punch- In order to readily admit the ticket to the punching device, l preier to turn the terminal of the member 16 and the terminal the strips 19 in opposite directions. stud 1S is provided with oi The edge bounding its top surface, but any other form 01"' cutting edge,
c an may be provided such as a cross or without departing from the invention.
ln Figure modified form oi' plate 11 is el, l have illustrated a slightly punch, in which a curved provided with slots 12 for receiving a strap of flexible material, such as leather or rubber, for removably attaching the punch to the arm or wrist of an attendant,
termin als 17 and since the ticketl inserted above they die member 18 may Vbe and the and 24- operated by one hand,
an annular cutting Y the punching device requires less manipulation and is therefore more sanitary than punches as heretofore constructed.
lVhile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be Varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and l therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the Whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
vWhat is claimed as new is:
l. A punching device comprising lateral plate members having openings therein, said openings adapted to receive fastening elements for attaching said device adjacent the edge of a fixed structure, a pair of walls rising from said plate members, an inclined platform integral with said walls and having a rear extension adapted to be positioned above and beyond the edge of the fixed structure, a stud rigid with said platform, and a resilient strip having an aperture therein registering with said stud, one end of said strip attached to the front of said platform and the opposite end of said strip extending above and in mating relation with the rear of said platform.
2. punching device including the combination of a sheet structure presenting oppositely extended terminal base portions, a pair of side wall portions rising from said structure between the terminal base portions, and an inclined top wall portion integral with said side wall portions and having a' rear extension adapted to be positioned beyond the edge of the fixed structure; a stud rigid with said top wall portion, a yield-able strip having an aperture therein above and in registry with said stud, one end of said strip attached to the front of said platform; a spring movable vertically on said stud for resiliently urging said yieldable strip thereabove, and a manipulative portion of said strip disposed above and in mating relation with the extension of said platform, substantially as and for vthe purpose described.
In testimony whereof l hereby afiix my Signature.
