COMBINED PENCIL HOLDER, SHARPENER, AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Filed March 23. 1936 Zhiventor ".w A m uttomeg Patented Feb. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COIVIBINED PENCIL HOLDER,
SHARPENER,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined pencil holder and sharpener and advertising device, and has for its object to provide an article useful for these purposes which may be carried personally and will be accessible and convenient to use.
The invention includes an advertising device as an appendage to the holder and sharpener; and an especial object in view is to produce a very useful device which may be manufactured at a nominal cost.
The invention consists of the new and useful construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that changes may be made in form, size, proportion of parts and minor details, said changes being within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing, Fig. l is front or rear view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a View of the same in longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the device, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the body thereof.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view showing one of the detent-members, and Fig. 6 is a side View, partly broken away showing an advertising device mounted upon a spring-holder.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description numeral 7 indicates a block or body, preferably of rectangular form in plan and side elevation used for the pencil holder and sharpener. It may be constructed of any suitable material.
Numeral 8 indicates a cylindrical aperture which opens on the top and bottom of the body I near one of its sides for receiving a pencil 9.
At I0 is indicated a second aperture which opens on the top of the body I, said aperture terminating near the bottom of said block but having a constricted extension II opening on the bottom of said body I, this second opening being adapted to hold a short pencil and adapted to receive a pencil to be sharpened.
The body 1 preferably is of limited thickness, the proportions being such that it will provide apertures 8 and ID of adequate diameters so that pencils of all sizes generally used may be received therein.
In order that the pencils will be securely held in the apertures and will not become lost, I provide a spring-holder I2, approximately of inverted U-shape provided at its ends with projections I3 extending inwardly therefrom, each projection I3 engaging in a detent-member I4.
Each detent-member I4 has a central recess I5 for receiving a projection I3, and each member I4 is slidably mounted in an aperture I6 formed in a side of the body I and opening on a pencil-receiving aperture 8 or ID, and in operation, the spring-holder will normally press the detent-members I4 inwardly into engagement with the pencils to prevent accidental detachment or loss, said members M having such proportions that they may enter the apertures 8 and III a limited distance, and preferably provided with flanges IT to limit their movements inwardly of said apertures I6.
Any suitable arrangement of blades I8 may be provided in the lower part of the aperture III, the rotation of the pencil tocause it to become sharpened being well known.
Numeral I9 indicates a jacket or cover for the holder I2 and it may consist of paper or other fabric upon which may be printed or stamped any suitable or desired advertisement, and this jacket is adapted to be secured to the holder by any suitable means.
The device may be attached to the clothing of the user or may be carried in the pocket in a position convenient for use, the cover I9 being exposed to View for advertising purposes, or the holder I2 may be disposed in the pocket so that the body I of the device will be disposed in a position convenient for carriage or removal of pencils, the spring-holder preferably being bent at right-angles as shown in Fig. 3 to lie at the side of the body I.
It will be appreciated that the device consists of few and simple parts so that it may be produced at a limited expense.
I claim as my inventi0n:--
1. In a combined pencil holder, sharpener, and advertising device, a body-member having an aperture opening on its top and bottom for receiving a pencil, a second aperture parallel with the first named aperture opening on the top of said body for receiving a second pencil and provided with a sharpening element, a pair of cylindrical detent-members slidably mounted in said body, an elastic holder elementof inverted U- shape engaging and arranged for pressing the detent-members into engagement with said pencils, and a cover for said holder element adapted to bear advertising indicia.
2. In a combined pencil holder, sharpener, and advertising device, a body member of rectangular form in plan and side elevation having an aperture opening on its top and bottom for receiving a pencil, a second aperture opening on its top for a said pencils, and a cover adapted'to bear indicia carried by said holder element, said holder element being arranged to have a swinging movement to lie at the side of said body.
JACOB MENDELSON.
