CARL.' FEDDERN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVNIA',` ASSIGNOR. TO GLOBE TICKET` maar narrar" .ltr-Fira;
COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION"GFFPENNSYL-l VARIA.
CHECK HOLDER;
Application filed July 30, 1920. Serial No. 400,113.
`ToaZZ whom t may conce/m:
Beit known that I, CARL FEDDERN, a citizen of the United States, residing yat Philadelphia,y inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new andusefulImprovements in Check Holders,
of whichthe following is a speciication.
My present invention relates to improvements in .holders for tickets or sales checks, and' more especially to those of the kind indicatingthe amountsof the purchases. mary object :of the invention is to provide a novel and improved holder for securing a pack of tickets or checks to a support,
. whereby the pack will be held securely un,-
til all the-tickets or checks in the pack have been used or removed, whereupon the remaining stub can be easily and quickly removed and replaced by another pack of tickets-or checks, this operation .requiring but slight eiort on the part of the operator and rendering it unnecessary toemploy keys, .or other adjuncts yfor this. performance.
To this end the invention consistsin certain improvements and combinationsy and arrangements of parts, all. as will be hereinafter morefully described, the features of novelty beingpointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a perspective view of a ticket or check holder constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure Qis vice, showing condition;
Figure afront or'face .view of the dethe pack holder in unfastened 3 represents a section taken centrally and longitudinally of the device; and Figure 4 represents a transverse section through the device on the line 4-4 of Figure 3. v Similar parts are designated by the .same reference characters in the several views..
The present inventionv is applicable generally to devices of various kinds, wherein it isdesirable or necessary to secure or hold a pack of ticketsor checks upon asuitable support. The invention is applicable more The pri-v especially to ticket or sales. check' holders` off.'A
the kind 'commonlyl employed in, restaurants and which are carried by the waitersandv adapted to be issued to the patronsto indi-- cate the amounts of the purchases or' thev amount to be paid to the cashier. The preferred embodiment ofll the invention is: shown in the accompanying: drawingand will be hereinafter described in detaiLl-but; it isfto beunderstood thatthe invention is: not restricted tothe precise construction shown, as equivalent constructions :arecontemplated and these'lwill be includedwith-v inthe scope Vof the'claims. y n f In the present instance, the device comprises a base or a member l which'may, as usual, be provided withl a loop or. clasp,v whereby it may be attachedto afbelt oi' other fasteningwornv by the waiter;` The pack of tickets or checks, designated X,- is; adapted tobe applied. to the face of this plate or member and preferably theupperend of said plate is bent forwardlyat sub-l stantially a right angle, as at `2. The pack of tickets or checks employedis preferably of the kind which comprises a stub portion at one end, while the remainder is to'be de tached, for which purpose the stub portions of the tickets or checks may. be provided with scorings or weakened lines to. facilitate detachment of vthe-bodies of ythe tickets'or checks.
The pack of tickets` or checksissecured .to the plate or member l by a holdenwhich, according .to the prese-nt invention., com,.- prises a gripping member andaLcooper'ative locking member 4. The. gripping member 3 isv composed preferably offiat spring steel,y or other suitable materiahnwhich is bent intosubstantially the form of-a. yoke, theY intermediate portions of` this :gripping member yresting .against )thel forwardly: bent portion 2 of thefmplate, while the two arms 5 and@ of the gripping member straddle, the upper or stub end of thepack, and the terminals 7 and 8 of these arms are preferably bent inwardly to. provide jaws,-the1 edges of which are adapted to engage and grip the opposite edges of the pack, at points substantially in line with the dividing lines between the stub portions and the body portions of the tickets or checks, are provided with substantially V-shaped notches, into which the inturned ends 7 and 8 of the arms 5 and 6 of the gripping member may enter, although ingsome instances the. holder may be employedin connectionwith packs of tickets or checks which are without such notches. The normal resilience of the gripping member acts to relatively separate the arms 5 and 6, as shown substantially in Figure 2, and while the arms of the gripping member arefin ,such condition, the stub of the used pack may beeasily removed from its position between these arms', and another pack of tickets or checksmaybe easily inserted.
j, The member 4 serves to force the jaws 7 and 8 of the gripping member into gripping and securin'gjrelation .with the opposite edges ofthe pack. .Preferably and as shown, this locking member is inthe form of a'clip having sides 9 and 10, an end 11 and a top 12.
The-'locking member is also preferably pivotedto` the plate or member 1,'on the pivot pin 13,"y as'shown'in the present instance, which extends through the sides 9 and 10 ofthe locking member'and through lugs or flangeslt, which extend downwardly from the part@ of the plate 1'. In the present instance, the pivot pin 13 also extends through the arms 5 and6 of the gripping member and*v thus serves `to retain the gripping member in operative relation with the back plate 1.- 'p When the locking member 4 is swung downwardly ory into the position shown in Figures 1 and 3' (full lines), the sides9 and 1'0 of the locking member come into engagement with the divergent arms 5 and 6 of the gripping 'member and thereby force these arms inwardly, causing the jaws 7 and 8 on thefterminals of the gripping member to press inwardly against the opposite edges of the pack, with the result that the pack is held immovably and securely on thel plate or member'l. The sides 9 and 10 of the locking member are preferably bent inwardly at their corners, as at 15 and 16, so that when the lockingmember has been moved into fully locked position, these inwardly bent ycornersjwill bear on the sides of the arms 5A and 6 of the gripping membe-r, adjacent to the plate or member 1, and will thus fric.-
kce
paired by the detaching of the tickets or checks `from the stub. When the-supply of tickets or checks in the pack has become exhausted, the stub remaining may be easily and quickly removed and replaced 'by another pack, without requiring the use of a key or other tool, it being necessary merely to swing up the locking member with a force suflicient to overcome the friction which normally holds it in locking position, .such
movement of the locking member causing the gripping member, by its inherent resiliency, to releasefits grip upon the stub of the pack. The invention also avoids the necessity of employing loose parts which wouldbe likely to become lost or misplaced.
- I claim as my invention- 1. The .combination of asupport adapted to receive'a vpack of checks and 'having a forwardly bent portion at one end, a yokeshaped gripping member Vcomposed of a strip of flat resilient material formed'separately from the support but having its intermediate portionabutting flatwise against said forwardly bent portion of thev sup-` port, said yoke-shaped member forming opposed arms extending longitudinally ofthe support, said arms being` arranged to engage opposite sides of a pack on said supportand 'having a rnormal tendency to spread apart, and alocking member cooperative with the arms of the gripping meinber tol force them into gripping engage p ment with the pack.
' 2. The combination of a support adapted to receive a vpack of checks andihaving a forwardly bent flat portion at vone end thereof, a gripping member composed of a strip of fiat resilient material bent into the shape '1" ofa yoke and having anintermediate-portion which abuts flatwise' against said forwardly lbent portion of the support, saidgripping member having opposed arms adapted to occupy positions extending longitudinally at opposite sides of a pack.4
on said support, and a locking member having sides to move* into engagement with the outer sidesof the arms on the gripp ping' member and thus force said arms 1nwardly into gripping engagement with Aan interposed portion of the pack, the 4sides of the locking member also having'inwardly bent corners to cooperate with the arms'of the gripping member when the 'locking member is in locking position. f
3. A check holder comprising in combination a support adapted to receive a pack of checks and having a forwardly bent flat portion at one end, a yoke-shaped gripping member composed of a strip of flat resilient material formed separatelyfrom thefsugpport but havingits intermediate' portion presented flatwise to said forwardly bent portion of the support, said yoke-shaped member forming opposed arms which extend longitudinally of the support and are arranged to engage opposite sides of a pack thereon, a locking member having sides arranged to Cooperate with the outer sides of the opposed arms of the gripping member to force said arms into gripping relation With a pack on the support, and a pivot mounted on said support and extending through the sides of the locking member lo and the opposed arms of the gripping member to retain the gripping member on the support and to pivotally mount the locking member on the support.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witl5 nesses.
