Be it known that I, RAYMOND W. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clips; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection ywith the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improved clip primarily intended for use in fastening printed matter, samples, etc., to letterheads in business correspondence, but available for use in a variety of kindred situations, the object being to produce, at a low cost for manufacture, a simple, convenient, effective and attractive clip constructed with particular reference to tenacity of grip, holding capacity, and to the display of trade-marks and other descriptive oradvertising matter, or both.

With these ends in view, my -invention consists in a clip having certain details of constructionl and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed -out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I produce, from a blank of thin, resilient sheet-metal, a clip-body comprising a circular, concavo-convex face-plate 10 and an integral, bowed reach 11 and shank 12 originating at the center of the upper edge of the said plate and turned rearward and downward behind the same, the said shank being enough longer than the diameter of the plate to project below the lower edge thereof, and set on a forward pitch to engage the said lower edge and thus form a wedge-shaped space 13 between it and the concave inner face of the face-plate 10. The said space 13 permits the clip to receive considerable material without tending to back off the same, as it were, and let go. Normally, the shank stands, as shown in Flg. 2, in a plane at an angle to the plane of the plate, from the lower edge of which 1t must be sprung away, as shown in Fig. 3, for its application, for instance, to a sample, such as the piece of fabric 14, shown 1n Figs. 3 and 4. When the shank is thus sprun face-p ate, it is placed under more or less tension, dependent upon the resiliency of the met-al and the extent to which the shank is sprung, which will, in turn, depend upon the thickness of the sample, or other item or items clipped At a point preferably above its center, the face-plate l0 is cut and struck inward to form an upstanding, spring grippingfinger 15, which co-acts with a corresponding spring gripping-finger 16 formed by cutting and setting forward a portion of the shank 11 at a point substantially behind the away from the lower edge of thev 16 being housed within the space 13. These two fingers are sprung apart when the clip is applied to an item and grip the same, in addition to the gripping-action produced by puttin-g the shank itself under tension, due to springing it for its application to the item. Byproviding the face-plate with a finger 15, complementing the finger 16 of the shank, I greatly improve the grippingaction of the clip, and, therefore, the stability of its hold. The gripping-action of the fingers 15 and 16 is also supplemented and protected by the burial, as it were, of the thin edges of the concave-convex faceplate in the item throughout an area substantially surrounding the said grippingfingers.

The front face of the face-plate is covered, as shown, and by preference, with a circular advertising-jacket 17 enough larger in diameter than the diameter thereof to have its edges crimped over the same, to form retaining-flanges 18, for its retention thereu-pon. In its upper edge the jacket is formed with a wide clearance-notch 19 for the clearance of the lbowed reach 12 of the shank 11 at the point where the same originates on the plate 10, -while the lower edge of the lll) jacket is formed with a corresponding clearance-notch :20, to facilitate the crimping of the jacket upon the face-plate. 'lhe provision of the jacket with the notch '.20 also facilitates the removal of the clip from whatever it may be clipped upon, since it exposes the renter of the lowei edge o't' the plate, which is slightly lifted at this` point by an indentation 2l, whereby the plate is easily engaged by the finger-nail of the user. The said notches 19 and 20 are as wide as, or wider than, the said shank. which they accommodate, as described. It is intended that the jacket shall be made of celluloid, or other corresponding material adapted lto be readiljv crimped upon the face-plate and also adapted to receive printing of a descriptive or trade-niark character, or both. Of course, the printing or reading matter imposed upon the jacket will widely vary,-as widely as the uses to which my improved clip may be put. In case the jacket is omitted, a trademark or other matter may be impressed directly upon the face-plate.

I claim:

l. As a new article of manufacture, a clip made of resilient sheet-metal and comprising a face-plate and an integral shank originating at the upper edge thereof, and extending downwardly behind the saine, the said plate and shank being furnished with gripping-fingers set into the, space formed between the plate `and shank arranged in line opposite each other and directly co-acting in discharging their gripping function.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a clip made of resilient sheet-metal and comprising a concave-convex,circular face-plate and an integral shank located *behind the same and connected therewith by a bowed reach, the said plate and shank being cut and struck up to form spring gripping-lingers located Within the space formed between the plate and shank arranged in line opposite each other and directly ceo-acting in discharging their gripping function.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a clip having a resilient clip-body comprising a face-plate and an integral shank located behind the same, one of the said parts having a spring gripping-finger located in the space between them, and the said face-plate being provided with an advertising-jacket havin r its upper edge cut away to clear the Shank at the point where the same originates on the edge of the face-plate, and having its lower edge cut away to form a clearancenotch corresponding to the width of the said shank and receiving the saine.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a clip having a resilient, sheet-metal clip-body coniprising a concavo-convex, circular faceplate andan integral shank located behind the same, one of the said parts being formed with a spring gripping-finger set into the space between them, and the said face-plate being provided with an advertising-jacket crimped over its edges and formed with clearance-notches for the clearance of the shank where it originates at the edge of the face-plate and where it makes contact therewith.

5. In a clip, the combination with a resilient, sheet-metal clip-body, comprising a concave-convex, circular face-plate and an integral shank located behind the same, of co-acting, spring gripping-lingers cut from the said plate and shank and set inwardly into the space ybetweenthe same; and a circular advertising-jacket `crimped over the said face-plate and formed in its upper and lower edges with clearance-notches for the clearance of the said shank where it originates upon the upper edge of. the plate and where it makes contact with the lower edge thereof.
