ADVERTISING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, F RANK THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of advertising device whereby advertising matter may be combined with a useful article and thus be readily brought to and kept before the attention of the public. V

More specifically, my invention has for its object to provide novel means for securing advertising matter to a pen or pencil clip, such as is used for retaining a pen or pencil in the pocket, in such a manner as to render the advertising matter effective and at the same time in no way interfere with the complete and efficient performance of the normal functions of the clip.

Such a device is primarily intended for free distribution in quantities by advertisers, and necessarily must be fabricated at a minimum cost. 7 By virtue of my invention, the component parts are not only inexpensive to make, but the device may be assembled rapidly and at a minimum cost.

The device made in accordance with my invention possesses not only the advantage of economy in the manufacture of its parts, but when assembled in final form is durable and capable of a long and efiicient life as an advertising medium as well as an article of utility.

I will now describe a preferred embodiment of my invention, in detail, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which like symbols indicate like parts in the var1- ous views, and in which 1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lead pencil with the device embodying my invention attached.

The clip is formed preferably from a single piece of metal having a spring band c adapted to engage a pen or pencil and retain the clip thereon, and a depending spring shank a, upon the lower end of which is formed aball 6 adapted to engage the outside of a pocket, extends from the spring band.

The spring band is slit and raised at a point above the upper end of the shank a to forma cleat d, and holes 6, e are punched through the band at points in line with the shank and adjacent the ends of the cleat.

The base 9, in the form of a button, adapted to have advertising matter printed on its face f, as shown in Fig. 1, is provided with a centrally located Z-shaped slot 7', the arms of which are curved, and which forms a pair of oppositely extending ears k, h, the opposite edges of which are curved as shown in Fig. 6. The base 9 is punched to provide the projections 2', i above and below the ends of the ears h, h, respectively, and in line with the center of the Z-shaped slot.

The base and clip are assembled by placing the base on the clip in such a position that the cleat (Z on the clip will be received in the body of the slot 7' in the base as shown in F ig. 7. A slight rotation of the base will cause the ends of the ears h, it toengage beneath the cleat and will bring the projections 2', 2' into line with the holes 6, 6 into Which they project and tend to prevent rotation of the base in either direction, thus locking the base to the clip.

It will be obvious that any desired form of face may be put on the base and that any *pype of advertising may be printed on the ace.

In use, the clip functions as usual and may be slipped on a pencil j, the advertising mat-' ter being thus secured to the pencil and at all times prominently pencil is in use or in the pocket, as will be seen from inspection of Fig. 1.

It is obvious that the device maybe apdisplayed whether the .matter, there being means carried plied to a pen holder or fountain pen as well as to a pencil.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. An advertising device comprising a pencil clip, consisting of a pencil engaging band and a pocket engaging shank, and a base adapted for the support of advertising matter, there being means formed on said base and clip adapted to inter-engage on relative rotation of said base and clip and secure said base to said clip.

2. An advertising device comprising a pencil clip consisting of a pencil engaging band and a pocket engaging shank, and a base adapted for the support of advertising by said band and base adapted to interengage on relative rotation of said band and base and secure said base to said band.

4. An advertising device comprising :1

clip consisting of a spring band and a downwardly extending shank, a portion of said band being slit and raised to form a cleat and provided with perforations at points adjacent the ends of, and in line with, said cleat, and a base adapted for the support of advertising matter, said base being slotted for the reception of said cleat and to permit rotation of the base relative thereto, said slot forming ears adapted on the rotation of the base to extend beneath said cleat and afford a connection between said base and clip, there being projections formed on said base adapted on rotation thereof to enter said perforations and tend to maintain thebase in fixed position. 7

5. An advertising device comprising a pencil clip consisting of a pencil engaging band and a pocket engaging shank, said band beingprovided with a cleat and having perforations ad'acent the ends of, and in line with, said cleat, a base adapted for the support of advertising matter, said base being provided with a Z-shaped slot, the arms of which are curved, forming oppositely extending ears, and projections positioned adjacent said ears in line with the center of said slot.
