INVENTOR. WILL [AM HALKE. T
BYWQKWW A TTORNEY.
WILLIAM HALKET, OF HOLYOKE. TIIASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNGR T0 L. D. VAN VALKEN- BURG, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON-HOLDING RETAIN intense.
Application filed May 2'7, 1919, Serial No. 300,120. Renewed February 10, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM HALKET, a citizen of the United States of America and resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hampdcn and State oi Massachusetts, have invented certain new useful Improvements in Button-lilolding Retainers, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact de scription.
This invention relates to improvements in retainers tor pencil pensand other writing instruments. and its leading object is to provide a retainer with simple means for locking the base of a button or display device thereto, in such manner that the locking connection will not be observable from the exterior of the retainer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a retainer with locking means of this character which will permit of theeasy and quick assemblage of the display device on the head or" the retainer.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and useful constructions combinations, and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a front elevation of my improved retainer.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the retainer with the button removed.
Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 4c is a side elevation of the re tainer band and a vertical sectional View of a button connected therewith.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a button base.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical embodiment of my invention, 5 designates the pencil or pen clamp or gripping band and 6 the pocket or garment gripping or holding bar, which is provided with the usual ball terminal 7. The band, bar and ball terminal may be of any construction.
The band 5 is tormed with a central Face projection 5 and has the button locking tongue 8 stamped therefrom, the drawing showing the free end of the tongue disposed near the top portion of the projection or extension 52 The locking tongue 8 is formed on the band 5 so that it will be slightly offsettheretrom, as shown in Fig. 2, and the Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented Apr. 18, race.
Serial No. 535,614.
free end or terminal portion of said tongue is slightly curved outward from the hand 5 so as to provide a slight clearance for the admission of the metal of the button base. lhc tongue 8 is also formed with a sag indentation 8.
and with a small opening 9 to receive the:
indented portion 8 The base 9 is placed adjacent the band 5 and the tree terminal portion of the tongue 8 is forced into the opening 9 and across the inner face ot the base 5 so that the indented portion 8 will snap into the opening 9 thus locking the base to the band 5. The face 10 of the but ton is then attached by any suitable method to the base 9, thus covering the tongue 8 and wholly concealing the locking connection.
By means of my invention various kinds of advertising or display buttons or emblems may bereadily attached to the band of the retainer and secured locked against movement or removal.
The locking connection provides an interlocking connection between the hand or head of the retainer and the base or back of the button or emblem. The indented portion 8 is designed to snugly lit in the opening 9 so that the tongue 8 has a two-point bearing on said base which will insure a non-movable connection between the base and the retainer, The face of the button. may be crimped on the edge of the base, or other-- wise secured in place, and when so secured the tongue 8 and its connection with the base will be completely concealed from observation. 7
The construction is such as to permit'ot quick assemblage of the advertising buttons or articles on the head or band of the re tainer. I
The butons or display devices or emblems are made up with backs or bases provided with the small slot to receive the tongue and another small slot or recess or the like to receive the off set portion of the tongue, so that a completely assembled button may be quickly and easily slipped on the tongue of the retainer and positively locked in place.
Having described my invention I claim 1. A retainer for writing instruments having an encirclin band formed with a spring tongue adapted to enter an opening in a butlit ton and provided With an indentation adapted to have interlocking engagement with the button to prevent displacement of the button on said band.
2. A retainer for writing instruments and the like consisting of a band having a spring tongue stamped thereon and formed with a terminal indentation and a button base having means adapted to be interlocked with said terminal indentation.
3. The combination of a base member for buttons having spaced openings, of. a retainer for writing instruments and the like having a spring tongue adapted to enterone of said openings and an indentation or the like to engage the other opening and hold said base member against relative movement on said tongue and band. v
4:. The combination with a base n'ieinber for buttons and the like of a retaining element having a spring tongue adapted to have a sliding interlocking connection with the base member.
5. In combination, a retainer having a ing an opening located near one side there of through which the tongue may be extended and means located distantly "from said 0 enin to receive said off set )ortion said tongue being adapted by its spring tension to hold said base snugly against said device and said offset portion being adapted to prevent movement of said base on said tongue. 1
