COMBINED BUTTON AND FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Mar. 23, 1920.
Application filed March 8, 1919. Serial 150. 281,450.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, GonDoN KALTENBAOH, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 79 Gillott road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Combined Buttons and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a combined button and fastener which is designed to attach to garments and the like without sewing and the object of my said invention is to provide a combiiied button and fastener which can be readily applied and which is adapted to pierce the necessary hole for the button shank and thus obviate the necessity of using any instrument for that purpose. Moreover when my cone bined button and fastener is atlixed to a garment it can readily be unfixed and again be similarly aiiixed for use in another position or on a different garment.
Accordin to this invention the button has a single stem or shank which has a knobbed or enlarged end and fitting on this stein there is a sheath like fastener which is pointed at one end and is adapted to en gage with the knobbed or enlarged end of the shank and can either be turned thereon to stand at right angles to the shank or can be turned so as to inclose the shank and be in a line therewith. T he said sheath is slotted longitudinally from its open end to about the center to permit of its turning at right angles to the shank as aforesaid.
In using the combined button and fastener the sheath is turned so as to be in line with the shank and then the sheath part in closing the shank is forced pointed end first through the fabric and is then drawn forward through a short space on the other side of the fabric and turned on the shank at right angles thereto so as to thereby effectually prevent the button shank from pulling out of the hole. To remove the button the sheath is again turned to stand in line with the shank and then the button can be pulled forward with the sheath out of the hole in the garment.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of a combined button and fastener constructed in accordance with this invention; I
Fig. 2- is a side elevation of the same partly in section;
Figs. 3, 1 and 5 are also part sectional side elevations of my invention to illustrate the method of using the same; and
Fig. 6 shows the thin sheet steel blank for forming the sheaths.
A isan ordinary button provided with a rigid single stem or shank B made with a knobbed or enlarged end 1. C is the said sheath like fastener which is pointed at one end 2 and is adapted to engage with the knobbed or enlarged end 1 of the shank B which enters the open end 3 of the sheath C and the latter is secured to the shank B by the end 3 of the sheath being slightly inturned so as to prevent the sheath from coming oil the shank until the shank and sheath are pulled with sufiicient force in opposite directions as to cause the enlarged or knobbed end 1 to pass through the inturned mouth 3 of the sheath. The sheath C is for about half its length from the ends say to the central part 4 made with a longitudinal slot 5 which is preferably slightly narrower than the diameter of the neck 6 of the shank B and this slot 5 terminates in an enlargement at which is slightly larger than the neck 6 of the shank but less than the knob 1 so that the neck will fit easily in this enlargement 4. Thus the sheath G can either occupy a position in line with the shank B as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4: or the sheath C can be turned at right angles to the shank B and be pushed endwise so that the shank B will travel along the slot 5 as far as the central part 1.
When attaching the button fastener A with its shank B and fastener C as to the portion 7 of a garment, the fastener G has first to be slipped up along the shank B, as in Fig. 3 so that the shank and sheath will then be substantially rigid and then by pressing on the button the pointed end 2 of the sheath will pierce the material 7 and be forced through the same to the other side thereof, and now the sheath G has to be pulled forward until arrested by the in turned end 3 of the sheath coming into contact with the knob 1 as shown in Fig. l.
Now the sheath has to be turned at right angles to the shank B as in Fig. 5 and the button is effectually secured to the material 7.
The button with the sheath can readily be i C and the fabric 7 and bearing against the latter. 4O
garment by first sliding the sheath C along until the open end 3 of the sheath is at the knob part 1 of the shank so that the sheath can now be turned in line with the shank and the button and sheath pulled back through the hole in the ma terial 7.
The longitudinal slot 5 in the sheath is preferably made very slightly less in width than is the diameter the sides of the slot are slightly pressed apart by turning the sheath to its right angled position as aforesaid and sliding the shank along the slot to the enlarged part, 4, so that as the shank enters this enlarged part 4 the sides of the slot spring toward one anremoved from the other again to their normal position and the neck andfhead of the shank are thus temporarily retained in the central part 4.
Said shank B and sheath 0 are preferably circular in cross section as illustrated or they may be comparatively flat and moreover as a modification the sheath may be permanently attached to the button shank so as not to be removable therefrom.
In order to afford the sheath Ca firmer hold on the fabric an ordinary small washer 8 may if desired be threaded on and along the sheath and off the same on the button shank against the fabric 7 after thesheath has been pushed therethrough as shown in Fig. 4 so as to be situated between the fabric and the sheath as indicated iinFig. 4, and now when the said sheath C is turned on the button shank B so as to be at right angles thereto as aforesaid to secure the button, the washer 8 willbe situated between the sheath will afford a large The sheath C can conveniently be made from a sheet steel or other suitable sheet metal blank 9 which is raised and bent up of the shank B so that.
into the required sheath like form as aforesaid. The blank for forming the sheath C illustrated 011 my drawings is shown in Fig. 6 and marked 9.
It is to be understood that by the term button I include not only buttons which are fixed to one part of a garment to be engaged in a button hole of the other part, but also such buttons as are used as dress ornaments, or to distinguish military and naval and other uniforms, or which serve as badges, said buttons having their heads or front parts made of various shapes and ornamented or furnished with various devices as is well understood.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a button furnished with a single stem or shank havin a knobbed or enlarged end, of a sheath hke fastener engaging said shank and made with one piercing end and the other end open through which the button shank protrudes said sheath being slotted longitudinally for a certain distance from said open end so as to permit of the sheath being turned to about right angles with the sheath and slid along the same for the purpose and substantially as set forth.
2. A combined button and fastener according to claim 1 in which the longitudinal slot of the sheath terminates in an enlargement between the ends of the sheath and the sides of said slot are so constructed as to be sprung apart slightly by the moving of the button shank along the same and to then spring inwardly to temporarily retain the button shank in the said enlargement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof name to this specification.
GORDON KALTENBACH.
