FRED S. MAKER, 0F SEEKONK, MASSACHUSETTS, AND RALPH K. MAKER, OF P ROVI- DENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
TIE-CLIP.
Application filed January 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED S. MAKER and RALPH K. lIAKI-IR, citizens of the United States, and residing, respectively, at Seekonk, in the county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts. and at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Tie-Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tie clips such as are commonly employed to hold neckties in position, although the structure shown is obviously adapted for use in a variety of different relations.
One object of the invention is to provide a' device of this character which will securely grip the fabric or other material to which it is applied throughout a considerable portion of its extent, thus preventing the clip from turning upon or becoming accidentally disengaged from the material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which has a portion presenting an ornamental appearance capable of being readily secured to the attaching portion of the clip and adapted to cooperate with a part of the attaching portion to securely engage the fabric.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will more clearly appear from the following description of the elements, arrangement of parts, and applications of principles constituting the invention.
In the accompanyihg drawings which form a part of this specification and in which a preferred form of embodimentof the invention is disclosed Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the main or body portion of the clip with the ornamental portion thereof removed to more clearly disclose the structure.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of that part of the structure illustrated in Fig. 3 and,
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith 10 designates the main or body portion of the clip which is formed of an integral piece of metal shaped to provide a flat substantially rectangular base 11 from which extends a tongue 12 of reduced width, bent as at 13 and extending backward in Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 14, 1921,
Serial No. 440,503.
proximity to the base 11, the free end of the tongue being bent as at 14 to permit the ready insertion of the material to which the clip is secured.
The base 11 is slitted as indicated at 15 to form a second tongue 16 which is bent downwardly from the plane of the base, and oppositely positioned relative to the tongue 12 with which it is substantially in engagement throughout a considerable portion of its length. The tongue 16 is curved adjacent to its free end as indicated at 17 to permit the fabric to be readily withdrawn from between the tongues without danger of being torn. The body portion 10 of the clip from which the tongues are formed is preferably constructed of resilient material whereby the tongues formed therefrom will resili- .ently engage fabric or other material interposed between them and thus securely hold the clip in position.
It will be seen that the tongues 12 and 16 are in close proximity to each other throughout a substantial portion of their lengths thus enabling them to grip material placed therebetween throughout a substantial extent and prevent the clip from turning or twisting thereon.
As will be seen upon reference to the drawings, the oppositely extending tongues 12 and 16 are opposed to each other thus enabling them to directly engage opposite surfaces of material placed between them.
A channeled member 19 of rectangular form is provided with an outer sin-face 20 upon which may be placed any desired ornamental design whereby the ornamental qualities of the clip may be enhanced.
The channeled member 19 is also provided with upstanding side and end portions 21 and 22 respectively, which when the base of the main body portion of the clip is pos1- tioned therein, extend beyond the lower surface of the base portion adjacent to the sides and ends thereof. The free edges of the side and end portions of the channeled member are turned inwardly as indicated at 23 to overlie the surface of the base and, firmly hold the base in the channeled member as well as to provide upstanding rounded edges 24 extending beyond the surface of the base and adapted to cooperate with the portion 14 of the tongue 12 to enable the tongue to more securely grip the material to which the clip is attached. The edges 24 being rounded there is no danger of the fabric or other material being cut or otherwise injured by attachment of the clip thereto, and this structural feature assists in prox'iding a firm grip for the clip aswell as insuring the proper retention of the clip in position.
While the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith discloses the preferred form of the same, it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the particular details of construction illustrated and described and the right is reserved to utilize any of the well-known equivalents thereof which may properly be included within the scop of the appended claims.
What we claim is 1. A tie clip provided with a base portion, a tongue having its free end arranged in proximity to said base port-ion, and a second tongue forced down from the base portion into a position opposed to the said first named tongue whereby the said tongues resiliently engage material interposed therebetween.
2. A tie clip provided with a base portion,
- a tongue formed integral with said base portion and having its free end arranged in proximity thereto, and a second tongue forced down from said base portion into opposed relation with said first named tongue whereby the said tongues will resiliently engage material interposed therebetween.
3. A tie clip provided with a base portion, a tongue havin its free end arranged in proximity to said base portion. and a second tongue forced down from said base portion into substantial parallelism with said first named tongue throughout a portion of its extent.
4. In a device of the character described, a clip provided with a base portion, a channeled member for receiving the base portion and having certain of its edges extending beyond the surface of the base, and a tongue having a portion normally lying in proximity to the base and below the edge of the channeled member.
In a. device of the character described a clip provided with a base portion, a channeled member for receiving the base portion of said clip and having its edges extending over and projecting beyond the surface of the base, and a resilient tongue integral with the base and having a portion normally lying in proximity to the base whereby material may be inserted between the edges of said channeled member and said tongue and yicldingly gripped thereby.
6. In a device of the character described, a clip provided with a base portion, a channeled member for receiving the base portion of said clip and having its edges extending over and projecting beyond the surface of the base, a tongue having a portion normally lying in proximity to the base whereby material may be inserted between the edges of said channeled member and said tongue and gripped thereby, and a second tongue extending in the opposite direction from said first named tongue and cooperating therewith to assist in holding material there between.
