PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN R. CRossMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in Pen and Pencil Holders, of which the fol lowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to a device fort holding apen or pencil in the pocket of a coat or vest, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple device which can be readily applied to any garment, and which will securely hold the pencil in place.

In order to give an understanding of my invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described, after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.

My improved pen and pencil holder comprises a fastening device having a shank adapted to be inserted through the coat or vest and provided at one end with ahead, said shank being bifurcated and constructed so that the ends of the two parts thereof can be bent or clenched over thereby to hold the device securely to the coat or vest, and a pencil-holding device in the form of an elastic ta e bent to present a loop and having the si es thereof secured to the shank of the fastening device between the head of said device and the coat or vest.

The fastening device has a shank 1 which is provided at one endwith a head 2. The shank is bifurcated thereby to present the two legs 3 and 4. This shank is preferably made of ductile material so that the legs can be readily bent to clench or fasten the device to a coat or vest.

Mounted on the shank is a disk or washer 5 which may be made of metal, celluloid, cardboard or any other suitable material. 7

The pencil-holding element is shown at 6 and this is made from an elastic tape which is bent into loop formation and which is secured to the shank 1. As herein shown, the shankl is inserted through the two sides 7 of the looped tape, although said pencilholding device might be secured to the fasteningv device in any suitable way.

In using the device, the shank thereof will be inserted through the coat or vest, as illustrated in Fig. 1, with the holding element 6 located between the coat or vest and the washer or disk 5. The ends or extremities of the legs 3 and 4: are then bent over on the inside of the coat or vest, thus locking or fastening the device in place. The pencil or pen to be held may then be inserted through the loop 6, and as the loop is normally slightly smaller than the pencil or pen, the tape will be stretched somewhat, thus causing suflicient friction between the tape and the pen or pencil to hold the latter firmly in position.

The device may be fastened to the outside of the garment in position where it is desired to hold the pencil, or it may be so fastened to the garment that the pencilholding element 6 is situated within the pocket at the top thereof, as shown in the drawings. In the latter case, the element will be con cealed by the outer wall 8 of the pocket and the pen or pencil will be located within the pocket.

.Ifdesired, the holding element may be made to present two loops 9, one on either side of the shank, as shown in Fig. 4:, in

which case the device will hold two pens or pencils.

Another way in whlch the devlce may be used to hold two pens or pencils is to insert it through both the outer wall 8 of the pocket and the body of the garment at such a distance from one edge 10 of the pocket that a pen or pencil 16 can be readily inserted between the fastening device and the edge 10 of the pocket. With this arrangement, the loop 6 will stand on the side of the device opposite to the edge 10 of the pocket and one pen or pencil 17 can be inserted through the loop 6 while another can be in serted into the space between the fastening device and the edge 10 of the pocket.

The washer or disk 5 can be made more or less artistic and ornamental so that the presence of the device on the garment will not make an unsightly appearance. This disk or washer also affords a place on which may be printed a legend, motto, inscription or advertising matter, thus giving to the device the character of a campaign button or advertising novelty, etc.

I will preferably make the legs 3 and l of different lengths, the leg a being longer than the leg 3. In securing the device to a garment, the shorter leg 3 will be prefer- 3 and 5, the operation of bending the legs 3 and 4 over will draw the body 18 of the garment outwardly between the two pens or pencils, as shown at 19. The elongated leg 4 when bent downwardly will lie in the groove or valley thus formed in the garment and will hold the device firmly in its vertical position. The disk 5 will preferably be of sufficient size to partially overlie the pens or pencils, thus preventing the front wall 8 of the pocket from being drawn inwardly. This results in maintaining a smooth surface at the front of the pocket.

I claim:

1. In a pen and pencil holder, the combination with an elastic pencil-holding element in the form of an elastic tape bent into a loop, of a fastening device presenting a shank-having a head at one end thereof, the shank being inserted through the sides of the loop and adapted to be inserted through a garment and secured thereto whereby the elastic loop will be held in position against the garment.

tic tape bent into loop formation, and a fastening device having a shank with a head at one end, said shank being inserted through the sides of the loop and through the garment and fastened thereto whereby the 100) will be clamped between the head of the fastening device and the garment.

8. In a pen and pencil holder, the combination with a fastening device comprising a bifurcated shank provided with a head, of a washer mounted on the shank adjacent the head, and an elastic tape bent into loop formation, the shank being inserted through the sides of the loop.

4. The combination with a garment having a pocket, of a pencil-holding device comprising a fastening device having a bifurcated shank provided with a head, which shank is inserted through the garment, and the ends thereof are bent over to lock the fastening device to the garment, and an elastic tape bent into loop formation and secured to the shank between the body of the garment and the head of the shank.

5. The combination with a garment hav ing a pocket, of a pencil-holding device comprising a fastening device having a bifurcated shank provided with a head, which shank is inserted through the outer wall of the pocket and the two parts thereof are bent over against the inside of the garment in a vertical direction, and an elastic tape bent into loop formation and secured to the shank between the body of the garment and the outer wall of the pocket, the bent-over ends of the shank cooperating with a pencil inserted into the pencil holding element to maintain said pencil in vertical positoin.
