COMBINATION PENCIL-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
Application led December 6, 1912. Serial No. 735,298.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, OLOF F. LAwsoN and CHARLES DUNGAN, citizens of the United States, residing at New Sharon, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Pencil- Clips, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to a combined pencil clip and tape measure, the primary object being to provide a pencil clip which is adapted to secure a pencil within ones pocket, the tape measure casing forming the gripping` jaw of the clip. The tape measure is thus constantly maintained in connection with the pencil so as to be in a convenient position for use, and, at the same time, its casing forms one of the operative parts of the clip.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, and which is neat and attractive in appearance.
rIhe invention consists in the features of construction combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the device in use; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the clip body; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the jaw-forming tape measure; and, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device in use, showing a modified form of tape measure casing.
In the drawing, l designates the body of the pencil clip which is formed from a single piece of resilient metal and is provided with attaching ears 2 which are curved so as to snugly embrace a pencil 3, or a pen if desired. A yieldable tongue 4 extends upwardly and outwardly from the lower edge of the body l. A tape measure casing 5 having a spring retracted tape 6 mounted therein, is attached against the front face of the tongue 4 so that its lower portion extends below the lower edge of the clip body Vl and forms a gripping jaw adapted to engage the outer face of a coat pocket, as shown in Fig. l. This casing 5 may be removably attached to the yieldable tongue 4 by providing an attaching bracket 7 upon the rear face thereof for the reception of the tongue 4 upon the clip body, or it may be attached in any other suitable manner as desired.
In order to release the device from engaging position with the wearers pocket, it is merely necessary to press the upper edge of the casing 5 inwardly against the act-ion of the yieldable Ytongue 4, the lower jaw portion of the casing being thus moved outwardly into inoperative position.
In Fig. 4, we have shown a design formed upon the outer face of the tape measure casing, so that the casing will serve as an emblematic button, which might prove a desirable feature and which would render the same more attractive in appearance.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that we have provided a very handy device which is adapted to serve a two-fold purpose, as described, and which may be designed in its minor details of construction so as to present a very attractive appearance, and which may be constructed so as to serve a still further purpose as an emblematic button.
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising a clip body adapted to embrace a pencil for longitudinal sliding movement thereon, an inclined spring tongue formed on the said clip body, and a spring retracted tapemeasure including a casing having a bracket thereon engageable with the said spring Y tongue.
In testimony whereof we afHX our signatures 1n presence of two witnesses.
