JOHN H. KNAPI, on NEW roan, n. r.
PENDANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,545, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed May 5, 1883. No model.)
f all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pendants, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel pendant for watch-chains and the like; and to this end it consists, essentially, in a pendant composed of a suspending device, and a case adapted for the reception of a pencil, and a swivel-j oint connecting the suspending device with the case.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a vertical central section of a case with a pencil inclosed. Fig. 2 shows a side view thereof; F Fig. 3, a top View thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
A designates a, case made of sheet metal, gold, or any other suitable or ornamental 1naterial which will match with a watchchain or present a tasty appearance when the article is suspended or worn on the person. This case is adapted for the reception of a pencil, B.
In the example shown in the drawings the pencil B is slid into the case and there-held by friction, which is an advantageous arrange- F'L o ment, as the pencil can thus be readily inserted V V and withdrawn. The end of the pencil B is preferably provided with an enlargement or head, which prevents the pencil from being i slid too far into the case, and also offers means 5 for grasping the pencil when the same is to be withdrawn.
The case A is provided with a suspending device, 0, which enables the case A to he attached to awatch-chain,or' otherwise attached 0 to or suspended from the person. The caseA is provided with a swivel or collar, E, Figs. 1
of the way, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.
2,when the pencil is to be inserted or withdrawn.
An advantage of this device is,that when it is desired to use the pencil the latter can be entirely withdrawn from the case A, and does not remain suspended or attached to the person when being used, which latter inconvenience offers ahinderance to writing with such pencils as remain attached during use; also,
when not in use the pencil can be readily inserted into the case A, and is kept out of the way and protected until it is to be again used.
Of course, in place of a pencil, the ease or receptacle A may obviouslybe used for analo gous purposes-sudh as, among others, the accommodation of a pen, watch-key, tooth-pick, or the like.
. hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pendant consisting of a suspending de vice, a case adapted for the reception of a pencil, and a swivel joint connecting the suspend ing device with the case, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
