O. A. GRONLUND GUARD FOR WRITING IMPLEMENTS Filed Nov. 25 1922 Patented May 22, i923.
f warren stares OLAF A. caonnonn, or FARGO, NO TH DAKOTA.
GUARD ron WRITING IMPLEMENTS'.
Application filed November 25, 1922. Serial No. 603,376.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, OLAF A. GRONLUND, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, Province of Saskatchewan, and resident, in the United States of America, of the city of Fargo, in the county of Cass, and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for WVriting Implements, of which the following is a specification! This invention relates to guards for writing utensils or devices, and has for an object the provision of novel means for retaining a pencil and fountain pen, or a pencil and other objects in convenient positions for use, whereas the said device is capable of being manipulated to retain the devices suspended within convenient reach of the user and in positions where they will not interfere with the duties of the user.
The invention is of particular utility for those who intermittently write but who have other duties such as that of showing or selling goods or taking orders for merchan disc; and the device is also of utility for use of clerks or bookkeepers who employ pens and pencils alternately or intermittently, since either pen or pencil may be brought to operative position expeditiously, whereas the pen or pencil which is not in use will be moved to a position out of the way in order that it will not interfere with the manipulation of the device to be used.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a device of the character indicated which can be expeditiously moved, as stated, and which will retain its place in different positions of adjustment without the necessity of manipulating securing means to accomplish that result.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application wherein like characters denote corresponding parts of the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a View in perspective of a device embodying the invention, the same being illustrated in operative position;
Figure 2 illustrates a sectional view of afragment thereof; and
Figure 3 illustrates a perspective view of a loop or retaining device with relation to which the guard proper is movable.
In these drawings, 5 denotes a flexible element, preferably of silk or some material which, when moved, will produce a minimum of friction as it engages and slides over the apparel of the user. The flexible strip is relatively long and is intended to embrace the neck of the user at the shoulders and to slide around the neck as the device is manipulated by pulling on either end of the said member.
There is a portion of the member constituting the loop which embraces the neck and there are two sections or ends 6 and 7 whichare adapted to be moved with relation to each other. These portions that are to be moved and which may be said to be par allel, are embraced by a retainer or keeper 8 with relation to which the member slides.
A pencil 9 is loosely connected to one end of the member 5, and a fountain pen or other writing implement 10 may be connected to. the other end of the member, and when pull is exerted on either-0f the ends, the member will slide around the neck so as to draw the opposite end toward the body of the user and this results virtually in shortening the endso drawn in order that the implement carried thereby will not interfere with the free manipulation of the other implement which is to be used.
The flexible member c-an'be so manipulated as to cause both implements to be in virtually the same plan and either will be within convenient reach, so that by a slight pull on the implement to be used, it can be moved outwardly, whereas the other one will be moved inwardly to an angle which results in affording a length of flexible material which will reach to the table, counter, desk or the like where the writing is to be done.
The retainer or loop should be of such size as to hold the lengths of the member against undue movement and yet permit its free sliding without producing friction to cause undue wear on the flexible member or those parts thereof that overlap and are in contact with each other within the area of the retainer.
Any suitable links or couplings such as 11 may be interposed between an implement and the end of the flexible member, and when the device is to be ornamental in addition to being made useful, these interposed elements maybe of some precious" metal whichwill enhance the appearance of the article manufactured. I r
I claim: it H The herein described guard for Writing implements, comprising flexible element adapted to embrace the neck of a user,
a loop embracing overlapping portions of the said flexible element and with relation to which the flexible element may slide, and 10 Writing devices attached to the ends'of the flexible member.
,OLAF A. GRONLUND.
