UNITED STATES nzaA se m; or HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
' "coiv a marionrocxm TOILET ARTICLE.
Application filed January 21, 1924. Serial No. 687,486.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E'ZRAjE. SMART,.21
citizen of the United States, and a resident v of Hartford, in'the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Gem bination Pocket Toilet Article, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toilet article comprising, in combination, a comb, brush and mirror particularly adapted to be carried 1n the pocket of the user.
The object of theinvention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of parts for atoilet article of this sort.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved toilet article of this characterwhich is extremely simple in construction, which may be manufactured and sold at a relatively low cost, which is handy and convenient in use, and which is extremely compact so that, when folded up, it occupies but very small space, thus permitting it to be conveniently carried in the pocket of a vest or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination of elements wherein the brush constitutes a. receptacle for receiving the mirror and also as a support to which the comb is pivoted. The brush also constitutes a handle both forxthe brush itself and for the comb;
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of ele-' ments and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein after set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part ofthis specification and in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts,
Figure 1 is an elevatio-nal view of my improved article with the comb shown in partly open position. The comb also is shown in dotted lines in the position which ittakes when the article is folded up;
Fig. 2 is an end View;
Fig. 3 is a view looking at the back of the brush and showing the mirror in place thereon; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 44: of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, a; designates the body portion ofthe brush provided with brush bristles Z). c designates the comb piv-- oted to the brush body a, and d is the mirror adapted to be slid into place in the back of the brush body. v I
The body portion a of the brush may be constructed of any suitable material, for in. stance, rubber, celluloid, or aluminum. If
desired, thebody a may be cast, but it is also capable of being'formed of sheet metal.
T he brush bristles may be secured to the body in any approved manner.
The back of:thebody has an undercut groove into which the inirrord is adapted to be slipped. This groove is formed by providing the body a, along its marginal-edges, wi th.inturned flanges or guides 10.- The mirror- (Z is of rectangular shape and fits closely with in the groove provided by the flanges 10. The mirror may have at one end a nail notch 11 for facilitating the withdrawal of r the mirror from place. Pivoted tothat face of the brush provided with the bristles is the comb c which may be of any desired shape and formed of any suitable material. This comb may be stamped from sheet metal. The comb has, at one end, a generally round portion 13 which bears against a semi-circular extension 14 at the end of the brush. The comb. may be pivoted to this extension in any desired manner, as by means of a rivet 15. For the purpose of limiting the opening movement of the comb, the latter has a shoulder 16 which is adapted to abut against a projection 17 on the brush body.
lVhen my improved toilet article is not in use, the mirror d is positioned in the groove in the back of the brush, and the comb overlies the'brush body with the teeth of the comb nestled among the bristles, as shown most clearly by dotted lines Fig. 1 and by full lines Fig. 2. WVhen in this condition, the article is very compact and, therefore, requires but slight space. If desired, it may be enclosed in a casing and the entire assembly may be carried around in the pocket of a vest or coat. When lllt is desired to use the article, the comb is swung into open position, and the mirroris removed. Then, While looking into the mirror, the user may comb his hair and then brush it. When the comb is used, the brush may be grasped in the hand and the comb held in extended position, that is, with the shoulder 16 thereof against the projection 17 of the brush. The brush thus serves as a handle for the comb. The brush, itself, is used 111 the same manner as an ordinary,
brush.
As many changes could be made in the above constructlon and many apparentlyv- V I I ties, and interengaging means between said widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above descrip.
tion or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. 7
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is in tended to coverall of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the to the brush. a v
combination, a brush bod-y provided on one surface with 'bIllSl1-b1iStl8S,nL. comb, means for pivoting one end of said comb to one end of said brush body, said comb being adaptedto'over'lie' sa-idbrush body with the teeth of the, comb-nestled among the briscomb and-brushbodyezfor l g the 1 tent of opening movement of thecomb rela- 3. A pocket toilet article colnprising in combination, albl'ush having a brush body provided on one face with bristles and on its mirror adapted to he slipped in place in said groove, a comb, a rivet for pivoting said comb to said body portion of said brush, said comb being adapted, when in closed position, to overlie said bodyportion Withthe teeth of the. combfnestledwamong. said bristles,- said comb havingKa shoulder and said body portion-hating. a projection against which said shoulden is adapted to engage, whereby th opening; movement of said combis limited.
