Description

Sept. 28, 1937. J. K. OMOORE-FARRELL 2,094,006
COSMETIC CONTAINER Filed March 16, 1935 W 102: OE M BY ATTORNEY I Patented Sept. '28, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to cosmetic containers and particularly to containers for lip rouge in stick form, commonly known as lipstick.
, An object of this invention is the provision of a lipstick container of novel construction, provided with a mirror attached thereto in such a manner as to be out of sight and protected from harm when not in use, and to be instantly and automatically brought into position for use whenever the lipstick is removed from its container, or at other times when desired. A further object is the accomplishment of the foregoing in such a manner that the mirror does not interfere with the convenient carrying of the i5 container in the purse or handbag, and the size of the device is not materially greater than that of the ordinary lipstick container.
In the majority of lipstick containers now in use no mirror is provided, the user being obliged to carry a separate mirror or do without one. While it has been proposed heretofore to provide mirrors affixed to lipstick containers, it is believed that the present invention for the first time provides such a combination in which the mirror is of a size practicable for use, is permanently attached to the container so as to be out of the way and protected from harm when not in use, and automatically exposed to view when the lipstick is withdrawn for use.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a perspetive view of a lipstick container according to the present invention, with its mirror exposed in position for use;
Fig. 2 is an exploded plan view of the device in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device of Fig. 1, with the mirror in closed position;
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section of a modification of the device of Figs. 1-4; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section of a second modification of the device of Figs. 1-4.
Referring to the drawing, the lipstick container of the present invention comprises a cover 5 and a lipstick sheath 6. The latter may be of cylindrical or polygonal cross-section, and in the present case is illustrated as of the common rectangular section. The sheath 6 is provided with an interior cup-like lipstick holder 1, in which the lipstick 8 is frictionally engaged. The cover, sheath and holder may be of any suitable material, such as one of the synthetic resins, or of light gauge metal.
An integral arm 8 extends from the holder I through a slot! formed in the sheath 6, permitting the manipulation of the holder I and lipstick B by movement of the projecting end of the arm 9. The sheath is provided with a cap member I I, which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner, integrally if desired.
A mirror holder l2, provided with a mirror I3. is secured to the cover 5, adjacent the closed end thereof, by means of a spring hinge I, the spring l5 being arranged to urge the mirror and holder to the open position of Figs. 1 and 2. The mirror holder i2 is provided with a slightdepression I8 adjacent its free end, for cooperation with a catch I1 formedupon the projecting end of the arm 9, for latching the mirror in closed position when not in use. A similar cooperation may be arranged between the arm 9 and the cap ii, if desired, but friction between the sheath 6 and cover 5 will ordinarily 'sufllce to prevent accidental withdrawal of the sheath.
It is apparent that, assuming the device to be closed, the grasping of the cap ii and projection-9, and withdrawal of the sheath 6 from the cover 5, will release the mirror holder l2, which will move to extended position under the urging of the spring l5. After the use of the lipstick and mirror has been accomplished, the mirror is folded down against the cover and the sheath and lipstick inserted in the cover and pushed home, the catch I! of the arm 9 engaging the depression IS in the mirror holder l2. The mirror is thus protected from damage while not in use, and the entire device, when closed, occupies very little more space than the ordinary lipstick.
Obviously the catch i! may be arranged upon the cover member 5 instead of upon the arm 9,
in which case the mirror will not be automatiupon the underside of the mirror cover I8 by means of a suitable adhesive or otherwise.
The terms and expressions employed herein are used for purposes of description and not of limitation. It is recognized that many modifications of the construction disclosed may be made within the scope of the present invention.
I claim: a substantially flush with corresponding surfaces A lipstick holder including a hollow cover havof said'cover and cap when said frame is in closed ing an open end and adapted to receive and enposition, a mirror disposed in said seat, and close a lipstick, a separable cap adaptedto carry adapted to overlie substantially the entire area the lipstick and close the open end of the cover, of said face, and means hinzedly attaching said a mirror frame movable between open and closed frame to said coverfor movement between closed positions on said cover and having a wall adapted position wherein said mirror is concealed by said to overlie a side face of said cover, and side wall. said flanges, and said side face, and open and end flangas adapted to form with said wall a position wherein said frame is swung away from 10 hollow seat for a mirror, said wall and certain said side face and said side face and said minor 10 of said flanges having faces adapted to be exare exposed. posed as exterior wall surfaces of said holder JOSEPH KEITH O'MOORE-FARRIIL.
