1944- H. M. KIRK-SCHNEIDER COSMETIC OR LIKE HOLDER Filed Oct. 10, 1942 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 17, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,360,350 COSMETIC OR LIKE HOLDER Hugo Montague Kirk-Schneider, New York, N. Y.
Application October 10, 1942, Serial No. 461,519
3 Claims.
' plastic material.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a lipstick holder characterized by its simplicity of manufacture and assembly.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a lipstick holder which is aesthetic in its appearance and adapted-to contain different color combinations.
It is another object to provide a lipstick con-- tainer which is non-operable in its closed position.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a lipstick container or holder having a closure which is clampingly held against the base of the holder to prevent its accidental removal therefrom.
These and other objects and advantageous features are accomplished by the simple, novel and practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter disclosed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential part of the disclosure, and in which:
Fig. l is an elevational view of a lipstick holder made in accordance with the invention and shown in closed inoperative position;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detached view (parts in section) of the base of the device;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional View of the outer or handle sleeve of the device;
Fig. 6 is aplan View of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is an outside view of the spirally slotted sleeve;
Fig. 8 is a plan view of Fig. 7;
Fig. 9 is a vertical section taken through the straight-slotted sleeve;
Fig. 10 is a plan View of Fig. 9;
Fig, 11 is a cross-section taken through the lipstick carrier sleeve; and l Fig. 12 is a cross-sectional view taken through Fig. 11.
It is preferable to make all of the parts embodied in the lipstick holder of plastic composition of the same or a combination of suitable and pleasing types. Such materials may be cellulose acetate, catalin, polystyrene, methyl methacrylate plastic, pyroxylin, other ethers and esters of cellulose or certain horn-like materials or synthetic resinous compounds, etc.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the lipstick holder generally indicated by the numeral I5 comprises the closure or cover l6, base handle or operating sleeve IS, the sleeve l9 having the spiral slot 23, inner sleeve 2| having the vertical slot 22, and the lipstick carrier sleeve 23 having a transverse pin 24 projecting outwardly through opening 25 in carrier 23 as indicated at 26.
Housing I6 is provided with a preferably domeshaped top 21. The bottom edge 28 of housing I5 is preferably provided with a plurality of inwardly directed bosses 28a which are adapted to clampingly. grip the constriction 29 in base member l1. Base number I! comprises the enlarged disc portion 30 to be gripped by the fingers of the user for turning the sliding mechanism hereinafter described. The constriction 29 is formed between portion 30 and the annulus 3|, arcuate in cross section, the bottom portion 28 of the closure sliding over this annulus when the same is positioned upon the base I1.
Base H has an annular groove or recess 32 in which is secured by cement or otherwise the lower edge 33 of inner sleeve 2|.
The outside diameter of the spirally slotted sleeve I9 is such that it forms a tight friction fit with the inside wall 35 of the operating sleeve l8. It is understood that the spiral slot 20 may be formed on the inner wall of the operating sleeve l8, thus eliminating a part, namely, the sleeve l9.
Inner sleeve 2| having the slot 22, has a cut 36 extending from the slot 22 upwardly to the rim 31 to permit insertion of the lipstick carrier 23 in the inner sleeve 2| with the pin 26 projecting through the slot 22. spirally slotted sleeve l9 has the spiral 20 terminating in an opening 38 at the top edge of sleeve l9 permitting the extension 26 of pin 24 to enter spiral slot 20.
After inner sleeve 2| has been secured to base I! in the groove 32, and after lipstick carrier 23 has been inserted so as to engage the straight slot 22 and spiral slot 20, the top edge 31 of inner sleeve 2| is turned over outwardly as seen at 31a, thus holding the various parts in operative alignment and assembly.
Spiral sleeve I9 being frictionally secured to the inside 35 of operating sleeve I8, if the base of the lipstick holder is held by fingers of one hand, while fingers of the other hand engages the operative sleeve I8, relative turning of the base and sleeve will cause the pin extension 26 to ride upwardly in the straight slot 22 thus expelling the lipstick L for use. Reversing this operation will again return the lipstick into the holder by causing extension of pin 26 to ride downwardly in the slot 22 by virtue of the spiral 20.
Lipstick L is securely held in the carrier 23 by the pin 24, the latter thus serving two functions, namely, as a grip for the lipstick and as a guide pin operating in slots 20 and 22.
It is understood that although the invention has been described as being applicable to a lipstick, the same may be used in connection with any medicinal or marking device which in inoperative position is concealed within the holder and which may be projected for use.
From the foregoing it may be realized that, as one aspect of the invention, there is provided a plastic holder for lipstick or the like, comprising the base having a peripheral groove or constriction 29, an annular portion 3| extending upwardly from constriction 29 and an annular recess 32 in base H; the inner sleeve 2| being secured to the base in said recess, the inner sleeve 2| having a straight slot 22, the outer sleeve l8 disposed over the inner sleeve; a tubular member l9 having a spiral slot therein, member [9 fixedly engaging the inner wall of outer sleeve I8; a tubular lipstick carrier 23 operable within inner sleeve 2|, carrier 23 having a transverse pin 24 therewithin and adapted for engagement with the bottom of the lipstick,
pin 24 extending through straight slot 22 and engaging the spiral slot of member l9; outer sleeve l8 and base being relatively rotatable, a cut 35 being provided in inner sleeve 2| extending from the top of straight slot 22 to the upper rim 31 thereof to facilitate reception of carrier 23 within the inner sleeve; upper rim 31 being turned outwardly or otherwise enlarged providing a stop retaining outer sleeve l8 between base I! and rim 31; and a cap or housing l8 covering outer sleeve l8 and adapted to engage with base over annular portion 3| of the base.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this invention a cosmetic or like holder in which the various objects hereinabove set forth, together with thoroughly practical advantages, are successfully achieved.
As changes may be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that the matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
