CONTAINER FOR LIPSTICK AND OTHER COSMETICS Filed July 22, 1968 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 United States Patent 3,506,368 CONTAINER FOR LIPSTICK AND OTHER COSMETICS Ronald B. White, Bournemouth, England, assignor to Edward Webster Limited, Bournemouth, England, a British company Filed July 22, 1968, Ser. No. 746,535 Claims priority, application Great Britain, Aug. 11, 1967, 36,951/ 67 Int. Cl. B43k 21/06, 23/00 US. Cl. 40182 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE -In a lipstick container in which the lipstick is held in a godet which slides axially in a cylindrical body and carries a radially projecting pip guided in a longitudinal slot in the body and adapted for engagement by a finger to move the godet and lipstick axially, the pip is made of a radial dimension only slightly greater than the wall thickness of the body and a cover for the body has an internal shoulder which, when the cover is fitted to the body overlies the pip and holds the godet and lipstick in their fully retracted position.
This invention relates to improvements in containers for lipstick and other cosmetics.
In one known type of lipstick container the inner end of the stick is held in a godet or cup which is axially slidable in a cylindrical body integral with or attached to a base. A radially projecting pip on the godet projects through and is slidably guided in a longitudinal slot in the body, the pip being engaged by a finger to slide the godet and lipstick outwardly for use after removal of the cover. The pip projects through the body for a distance equal to or slightly greater than the wall thickness of the cover and when the cover is replaced it pushes the pip downwardly into a recess provided for it in the base so that the godet and lipstick are held in their fully retracted positions.
With this construction the pip is always exposed and detracts from the appearance of the container.
The invention comprises a lipstick or like container of the kind in which the inner end of the lipstick is held in a godet or cup which is axially slidable in a cylindrical body integral with or attached to a base, and a radially projecting pip on the godet projects through and is slidably guided in a longitudinal slot in the body, the pip being adapted for engagement by a finger to slide the godet and lipstick outwardly for use after removal of a cover, wherein the pip on the godet is made of a radial dimension only slightly greater than the wall thickness of the body and a cover for the body is formed with an internal step or shoulder which, when the cover is fitted to the body, overlies the pip and holds the godet and lipstick in their fully retracted positions, the pip being located within and concealed by the cover.
Thus in the normal out-of-use condition of the container the pip on the godet lies within and is wholly concealed by the cover, and the container has the same smooth exterior and appearance as containers of the kind in which the godet carries a peg working in a helical slot in a helical sleeve or in the body itself and the godet and lipstick are moved axially by relative rotation between parts of the container.
One practical embodiment of our invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of the complete container with the cover in position;
3,506,368 Patented Apr. 14, 1970 FIGURE v2 is a longitudinal section of the container on the line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a longitudinal section with the cover removed and the godet and lipstick fully projected;
FIGURE 4 is a plan of the godet on a larger scale;
FIGURE 5 is a section of the godet on the line 5-5 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 6 is a vertical cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of FIG. 2.
In the lipstick container shown in the drawings the cover 10 is a hollow cylinder closed at its outer or upper end. The internal diameter of the cover is greater for a short distance from its lower end than over the remainder of. its length, the change in diameter providing a narrow annular internal step or shoulder 11.
The body 12 is also a hollow cylinder and is integral with a base 13. The external diameter of the body is slightly less than the internal diameter of the upper part of the cover 10, that is, the part of less internal diameter, and, the external diameter of the base 13 is substantially equal to that of the cover.
A godet 14 in which the inner end of the lipstick 15 is received and held is mounted to slide axially within the body and has a radially projecting pip 16 which projects for a short distance through and is guided in a longitudinal slot 17 in the body. The upper part of the slot is narrowed as shown at 18 to grip the pip and hold the godet and lipstick frictionally in the projected position shown in FIGURE 3.
At its upper end the narrowed part 18 of the slot is formed with inwardly projecting shoulders 19 to provide a stop for the outward movement of the godet, but the slot is continued through to the extremity of the body as a narrow slit 21 to allow the end of the body to be opened or expanded for the insertion of the godet.
At its lower end the body is formed with three or more angularly spaced radially projecting ribs 22 extending upwardly from the base to about the level of the lower end of the slot 17 in the body. The radial projection of the ribs from the surface of the body is such that the lower end of the cover, which is of enlarged internal diameter, is a good frictional fit over the ribs.
The axial length of the part of the cover of enlarged internal diameter is very slightly greater than the axial distance of the upper surface of the pip 16 on the godet from the base when the godet and lipstick are in the fully retracted position shown in FIGURE 2. Thus when the godet and lipstick are fully retracted and the cover is fitted over the body the annular step or shoulder 11 in the cover at the change in internal diameter overlies the outer or upper side of the pip 16 on the godet and forms a stop preventing axial outward movement of the godet and lipstick away from the fully retracted position and hence preventing contact between the outer end of the lipstick and the closed outer end of the cover.
The cover, the body with the base, and the godet are all conveniently formed as mouldings in polystyrene or other suitable plastics material, and the cover may be ornamented or otherwise finished in any desired manner.
What I claim is:
1. A lipstick or like container of the kind in which the inner end of the lipstick is held in a godet or cup which is axially slidable in a cylindrical body integral with or attached to a base, and a radially projecting pip on the godet projects through and is slidably guided in a longitudinal slot in the body, this pip being adapted for engagement by a finger to slide the godet and lipstick outwardly for use after removal of a cover, wherein the improvement consists in forming the pip on the godet of a radial dimension only slightly greater than the wall thickness of the body and in providing a cover for the body with an internal step or shoulder which, when the cover is fitted to the body, overlies the pip and holds the godet and lipstick in their fully retracted positions, the pip being located within and concealed by the cover.
2. A lipstick container as in claim 1 wherein the cover is cylindrical and the internal step or shoulder in the cover is formed by enlarging the internal diameter of the lower end of the cover over a length substantially equal to the axial distance of the upper surface of the pip from the base when the godet and lipstick are in their fully retracted positions.
3. A lipstick container as in claim 2 wherein the external diameter of the body is substantially equal to the internal diameter of the part of the cover of less internal diameter, and the body is formed at its inner end with angularly spaced radially projecting ribs extending upwardly from the base to about the level of the lower end of the slot in the body, the radial projection of the ribs from the surface of the body being such that the lower part of the cover is a good frictional fit over the ribs.
