Application May 1, 1942, Serial No. 441,402 3 Claims. (or. 206-56) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cosmetic holders and more particularly to holders for lipsticks, eyebrow pencils and the like.

The primary object of the present invention is a cosmetic holder, all the parts of which may be wholly composed of plastic material.-

Another object of the invention is a cosmetic holder so constructed and designed as topermit all of the parts to be made wholly of plastic material. I

It is also an object of the invention to provide a cosmetic holder, irrespective of the material .of which it is made, in which the cosmetic carrier cannot be advanced when the removable cover is on the cosmetic holder.

It has heretofore been proposed to provide a cosmetic holder in which the carrier for the cosmetic is advanced by the relative rotation of two slotted members but such cosmetic holders of the prior art had, because of. their design and construction, to be made entirely of metal or, in a few cases, partly of metal andpartly of plastic material.

The present invention therefore also relates to features of a cosmetic holder whereby all of the may be wholly made of plastic material.

These and other objects or the invention and the means for their attainment will be more apparent from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment by whichthe invention may be realized and in which:

Figure 1 is, in effect, an exploded view showing the cosmetic holder of this invention with the stick of cosmetic in its advanced position and with the removable cover in spaced relation thereto;

Figure 2 is a view, in longitudinal section,

Referring first to Figures 1 to 6 of the drawings in which similar parts are indicated by identical reference characters, the embodiment of this invention there shown embodies an inner cylindrical sleeve I of constant diameter, the lower end 8 of which is disposed within a cylindrical recess it formed in the bottom of the cup-shaped base member l2 which recess is preferably defined by an annular wall l3 concentric with and inwardly spaced from the annular outer wall ll of the base-member. The inner sleeve 1 and the base member l2 may be considered as an inner ing through the bottom edge thereof and extending to a point is proximate the upper edge. The sleeve 1 is positioned against turning within the base l2--l 6 by a rib or lug 20 shown as formed on the annular wall It of the base andextending radially in an outward direction to the wall and extending into the recess H. The lug 20 is received in the slot i8 and maintainsthe proper spacing of the slot and the true cylindrical shape of the sleeve. It also serves as a stop limiting the downward movement of the cosmetic carrier 22-24.

The cosmetic carrier, as illustrated in Figure 1, comprises a cup-shaped member 22-24, whereof the cylindrical wall 22 and perforated bottom 24 are formed of plastic material. formed or otherwise carried on the outer surface of the cylindrical wall 22 of the carrier, which lug is preferably cylindrical and of a length to pass through the slot II in the inner sleeve 1 A lug 2! is member 28 next to be described. The closed end .18 of the slot l8 serves as a stop for the cup in its protracted position. This carrier is readily formed of plastic material in a simple manner, as will be understood.

The outer sleeve 28 is formed with a cylindrical inner surface of a diameter to receive the cylindrical outer surface of the inner sleeve 1 and of a length to extend between a rim or flange 30 on the upper end of the inner sleeve 1 and the upper edge of the base l2-| 4. The periphery 3| of the flange 30 is preferably polygonal. On its inner surface, the outer sleeve is formed with a helical groove 32 opening as at 34 in the plane of the bottom surface of the sleeve and continuing upwardly to a point 36 proximate the open mouth thereof. The groove 32 may, if desired, extend through to the top edge of sleeve 28. Rotation of the outer sleeve 28 advances and retracts the

22, 24, as will be understood. Again, this member may be readily formed of plastic material. In cross-section, the exterior surface of this sleeve is preferably polygonal and of the exact size and shape of the surface 3| of flange 30. In the illustrated embodiment, the sleeve is tensided.

Preferably the outer surface iii of the flange and the outer surface of the outer sleeve 28 are so proportioned that they register when the carrier is in the retracted position of Figure 2.

The removable cover comprises a tubular portion 38 and an end closure portion 40 integral therewith which is conveniently of frustopyramidal form to conform somewhat to the shape of the end of a lipstick or eyebrow pencil or other stick of cosmetic 42. wall 38 is of a length to permit the removable cover to be slipped over the outer sleeve 28 and rest upon the edge l of the base member. The inner surface of the removable cover is polygonal in cross-section, conveniently ten-sided, so that it can be slipped over the edge 300i the inner sleeve 1 and over the outer sleeve 28. The removable cover, when fitted down over the rim of the inner sleeve and over the outer sleeve, prevents relative rotation of either of the sleeves with respect to one another or with respect to the cover and thus forms, in effect, a lock which prevents rotation of the base and inner sleeve which would otherwise tend to advance or project the stick of cosmetic when the cover is in place and thus force the cover off the holder. The stick of cosmetic cannot be projected until after the cover has been removed. The removable cap 35 is ten-sided and is preferably of a size to register with the rim H of the base i 2.

To retain the lipstick or eyebrow pencil in position in the carrier, tongues 41 are, if desired, provided on the inner wall of the carrier and usually the bottom of the cup is apertured as at 43. As these form no part of the present invention they will not be described in detail.

The periphery of the flange 30 may be cylindrical as shown in Figure 8. Here, the base member I6 may be formed proximate its upper edge with a portion 44 formed with teeth 46 which are engaged by coacting teeth 48 on the cover 38 to prevent relative rotation.

It will thus be seen that a lipstick holder has been provided which is composed of a minimum number of parts, all of which are readily formed of plastic material in simple operations and which requires only a single operation to secure the component parts of a holder, as distinguished from the removable cover, onto a non-separable unit. The lipstick holder so constructed presents a graceful and pleasing appearance and is capable of ornamentationto provide an attractive product. Furthermore, the parts cannot be moved relative to one another to project the stick of cosmetic against the cover when the cover is on the cosmetic holder.

Various modifications will occur to those skilled in the art in the particular plastic composition used and the method of forming or shaping the plastic material and no limitation is intended by the phraseology of the foregoing description or illustrations in the accompanying drawings except as indicated in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A cosmetic holder comprising a relatively thick-walled outer sleeve formed with an internal helical groove, a relatively thick-walled longitudinal slotted unitary inner sleeve formed with a longitudinal slot extending from one edge to a point proximate the other end movably fitted within the outer sleeve, a base member formed with a continuous groove receiving the inner sleeve, said base member having a lug in the groove received in the open end of the slot and positioning the inner sleeve, a carrier disposed within the inner sleeve, said carrier having a lug extending through the slot in the inner sleeve whereby manual rotation of the base member will effect relative rotation of the respective sleeves with concomitant travel of the carrier.

2. A cosmetic holder comprising a relatively thick-walled outer sleeve whereof its outer surface is polygonal in cross-section, a relatively thick-walled inner sleeve movably fitted within the outer sleeve and formed with a lip extending over and registering with the upper end of the outer sleeve, a base member secured to the inner sleeve, a carrier disposed within the inner sleeve, means for advancing and retracting said carrier coincident with the relative rotation of the respective sleeves and a removable cover having an inner surface polygonal in cross-section to register with the outer sleeve and the lip and prevent relative rotation of the sleeves.

3. In a cosmetic holder, a cylindrical sleeve formed with a longitudinal slot opening through the lower edge of the sleeve and extending to a point proximate the upper edge of the sleeve, a base member formed with an annular groove receiving the said lower edge of the sleeve, and a lug formed in said groove, said lug received in the open end of the sleeve slot.
