(Cl. 206-56) The present invention relates to a lipstick device and more particularly to a novel cover construction adapted to be mounted thereon for protecting the lipstick and preventing inadvertent operation thereof.
Heretofore, in providing covering means for lipstick devices, particularly of the type having an inner member and a sleeve rotatable on the inner member for moving a lipstick into and out of the inner member, a cover has been provided which telescopes over the sleeve. In order to prevent the cover from being accidentally removed from the lipstick device or from inadvertently being rotated so as to rotate the sleeve and cause the lipstick to move outwardly of the inner member and into engagement with the cover and thus damage the lipstick, the inner member has been provided with a projection which frictionally engages the inner end of the cover with sufficient pressure to hold it against relative movement thereon. When the cover has been made of plastic material, such as styrene or the like, this projection produces an outward radial pressure which sets up stresses in the cover material" After a period of time, these stresses cause the cover to split.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel lipstick device in which a telescoping cover member is effectively held in place on the lipstick device and is provided with means for preventing relative rotation of the cover and the device without any outward pressure applied to the cover adjacent the open end thereof.
This is accomplished by providing the cover with internal ribs or lands adjacent the closed end thereof which are adapted to frictionally engage the sleeve on the lipstick device to hold the cover in place thereon. While there is lateral pressure developed by these lands in engaging the sleeve, this pressure is applied adjacent the closed end of the cover so that the danger of splitting because of the lateral pressure is eliminated. The other end of the cover extends beyond the inner end of the sleeve and is provided with means for interlocking with the inner member for preventing relative rotation between the cover and the inner member.
Since the sleeve is frictionally held to the cover, the cover also prevents the sleeve from rotating on the inner member and moving the lipstick inadvertently outwardly and into engagement with the cover to damage the lipstick.
In the preferred form of the invention the inner member is provided with a plurality of projections or teeth and the inner portion of the cover adjacent the open end is provided with sockets or teeth which are freely movable into cooperative relation with those on the inner member and prevent rotation of the cover with respect to the inner member. Since the cover is held on the lipstick device by the lands at the outer end of the sleeve, the interlocking means between the cover and the inner member are of such dimensions as to freely interlock and substantially eliminate all radial outward pressure adjacent the open end of the sleeve whereby cracking of the sleeve is eliminated.

While various types of lipstick devices may be used in combination with the cover of the present invention, in the illustrated form, the lipstick device 10 comprises an inner member 11 having a closed bottom portion 12 and a bore 13 extending from the closed bottom wall to the other end thereof. A lipstick carrier in the form of a cup 15 having a lipstick 16 mounted therein is slidably mounted in the bore and has a pin 17 projecting from one side thereof and disposed in a longitudinal slot 18 formed in the inner member. The pin projects beyond the outer surface of the inner member and a sleeve 19 is rotatively carried by the inner member and has a helical groove 26 on the inner wall cooperating with the projecting pin 17 so that upon relative rotation of the sleeve on the inner member the carrier 15 with the lipstick therein will move inwardly and outwardly of the inner member by operation of the helical groove on the projecting member. While the inner member, sleeve and carrier may be made of metal, they are herein illustrated as being molded from plastic.
A cover 21, as shown in FIG. 2, is adapted to be telescopically mounted over the lipstick device and has one end closed by a wall 22 and the other end 23 is open to receive the lipstick device. This cover is preferably molded from plastic material, such as styrene or the like, and has formed adjacent its upper end a plurality of lands 24 shown in FIGS. 2 and 6. These are adapted to frictionally engage the outer end portion of the sleeve 19 as shown in FIGS. 1 and 4 when the cover is in closed position as shown in FIG. 1. While there is an outward radial pressure produced by the action of these lands, it is applied adjacent the close end so that splitting of the cover thereby is effectively prevented by the end wall 22. This holds the cover in position on the lipstick device so as to prevent accidential withdrawal thereof.
The open end 23 of the cover projects beyond the inner end portion of the sleeve, as shown in FIG. 1, and has a plurality of sockets or recesses 25 forming teeth, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 6, which are adapted to cooperate with projections or teeth 26 formed on the inner member as shown in FIGS. 3 and 7. As shown in FIG. 5, the teeth on the cover and inner member are freely nested so that there is no radial outward pressure applied to the end portion of the sleeve as might cause it to crack. The interlocked teeth prevent relative rotative movement between the cover and inner member and, therefore, between the inner member and the sleeve which is frictionally held to the cover. With this relation, inadvertent feeding of the lipstick, as might cause it to be projected against the end Wall 22 of the cover and cause damage to the point of the lipstick, is avoided.
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
I claim:
1. In a lipstick device having an inner member, means including a sleeve rotatable on the inner member for moving a lipstick into and out of said inner member, and
a cover of plastic material having an open end and a closed'end for telescoping over said sleeve, said cover having means adjacent the closed end for frictionally engaging the sleeve to hold the cover on the sleeve in telescoped position, the cover adjacent the open end thereof having internal open-ended sockets interlocking with longitudinally projecting ribs formed on the inner member when telescoped over the sleeve to prevent relative rotation of the cover and sleeve with respect to the inner member, said ribs being freely received in the sockets and devoid of outward pressure on the cover whereby cracking of the cover is prevented.
2. In a lipstick device having an inner member, means including a sleeve rotatable on the inner member for moving a lipstick into and out of said inner member, and a cover of plastic material having an open end and a closed end, said cover having means adjacent the closed end for frictionally engaging the sleeve to hold the cover on the lipstick, the cover adjacent the open end having internal sockets formed in the wall thereof interlocking with projections on the inner member to prevent relative rotation of the cover and sleeve with respect to the inner member, said interlocking of the sockets and projections being freely nested and devoid of outward pressure on the cover whereby cracking of the cover is prevented.
3. A cover of plastic material for a lipstick device, said cover having an open end and a closed end, said cover having means adjacent the closed end for frictionally engaging the lipstick device to hold the cover thereon, said cover having a smooth outer wall surface adjacent the open end and having open-ended socket means formed in the inner Wall surface adjacent said open end for receiving and interlocking with means on said lipstick device to prevent relative rotation of the cover thereon.
4. In a lipstick device having an inner member, means including :a sleeve rotatable on the inner member for moving a lipstick into and out of said inner member, and a cover of plastic material having an open end and a closed end telescoping over said sleeve, said cover having means adjacent the closed end for frictionally engaging the sleeve to hold the cover in position on the sleeve against inadvertent removal therefrom, the cover adjacent the open end thereof having a smooth outer surface and having internal open-ended sockets in the wall thereof receiving and interlocking with a plurality of projections on the inner member when the cover is in place thereon to prevent relative rotation of the cover and sleeve with respect to the inner member, the projections being of a size as to fit in the sockets without applying radial outward pressure to the cover when in said position on the sleeve whereby breaking of the cover thereby is prevented.
5. In a lipstick device having an inner member, means for moving a lipstick into and out of said inner member including a sleeve rotatable on the inner member and having inner and outer end portions, and a cover of plastic material having an open end and a closed end for telescoping the sleeve, said cover having means adjacent the closed end for frictionally engaging the outer end portion of the sleeve to hold the cover on the lipstick, the cover adjacent the open end extending beyond the inner end of the sleeve and being in telescopic engagement with said inner member, the telescoped engaging surfaces of said cover and inner member having formed integrally therewith cooperating sockets and projections to prevent relative rotation of the cover, and the sleeve frictionally connected thereto, with respect to the inner member, said cooperating sockets and projections being freely nested and devoid of outward pressure on the cover whereby cracking of the cover is prevented.

1. IN A LIPSTICK DEVICE HAVING AN INNER MEMBER, MEANS INCLUDING A SLEEVE ROTATABLE ON THE INNER MEMBER FOR MOVING A LIPSTICK INTO AND OUT OF SAID INNER MEMBER, AND A COVER OF PLASTIC MATERIAL HAVING AN OPEN END AND A CLOSED END FOR TELESCOPING OVER SAID SLEEVE, SAID COVER HAVING MEANS ADJACENT THE CLOSED END FOR FRICTIONALLY ENGAGING THE SLEEVE TO HOLD THE COVER ON THE SLEEVE IN TELESCOPED POSITION, THE COVER ADJACENT THE OPEN END THEREOF HAVING INTERNAL OPEN-ENDED SOCKETS INTERLOCKING WITH LONGITUDINALLY PROJECTING RIBS FORMED ON THE INNER MEMBER WHEN TELESCOPED OVER THE SLEEVE TO PREVENT RELATIVE ROTATION OF THE COVER AND SLEEVE WITH RESPECT TO THE INNER MEMBER, SAID RIBS BEING FREELY RECEIVED IN THE SOCKETS AND DEVOID OF OUTWARD PRESSURE ON THE COVER WHEREBY CRACKING OF THE COVER IS PREVENTED.
