.This invention relates to a container made of wood and designed to be used with cosmetic stick material. shaving soaps and the like. Specifically, this container-is a two-piece construction comprising a holder for the material and'a cover for the same.
In the selection of wood for. use in containers considerable manufacturing tolerances have to.
be allowed that is an additive factor to the difllculty of assuring a good fit between the two parts under all conditions. I
It is therefore an object of this invention to anticipate the above difficulties and provide a wooden containerso constructed that no objectionable binding will result in case the parts swell or a too loose fit will result in case the parts dry out so that a good slip fit can be assured at all times.
A further object Bfthis invention is to provide a means for securing the cosmetic material within the holder member, which means is inherent in the construction ofsaid member.
With these and other objects in view this invention will appear obvious and will be hereinafter more fully described.

Referring now to the drawing in which l ke numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral i0 designates generally the holder member, which comprises an enlarged beaded end l2 and an integral hollow cylindrical wall it within which the c smetic material it may be secured. The inner d ameter of-the cylindrical wall, as best shown in Fig. 2,
I is-slightly larger than the normal diameter of the stick material it. In order to securely anchor the stick material it within the holder ill, the
base portion of the holder member i0 is provided with an upwardly extending domed or con-vex section It that serves to swage the stick material outwardly and cause it to jam against the inner diameter of the cylindrical wall it as it is forced'down into the hollow part of the holder iii. The fact that the holder member III is made of wood, the interior surface of the cylindrical wall it will be either rough or porous enough to assure a good binding eflect between the stick material and the wall surface thereof.
A cap member 20 is provided and designed to have its open end telescopically fit over the cylindrical wall it of the holder member ill. The open endof this cap is provided with a counterbore 22 having its wall surface formed on a slight taper so dimensioned that its mean diameter should be substantially the same as the outer diameter of the cylindrical wall It. the comparison of which dimensions is shown in Fig. 4. When assembling the cap 20 over the holder member l0 theupper edge of the cylindrical wall it will then engage approximately the middle portion of the oounterbore 22. By having one member formed with a tapered surface and the complementary, engaging "surface of the other member of a cylindrical shape it will be apparcreated between the telescopic cylindrical and tapering surfaces I4 and 22 will be substantially uniform throughout the complete assembly operation and to eliminate any severe binding the wall portion ll of the holder member I0 is provided with diametrically opposed axial relatively narrow slots 2t such as can be made by a saw blade and extending substantially the entire length of said wall. These slots 'allow the cylindrical wall It to resiliently give inwardly as said wall is forced against the tapered wail of the oounterbore 22. Further, if perchance the stick material that is assembled into the cup It has a tight fit with the wall it an a r pocket that might be created in the base of said cup will be exhausted through the base-ends of said slots 24.

The adjacent end of the cap 20a is provided with diametrically opposed longitudinal narrow slots 2m whereby that end of the cover can give in conformity with the tapered wall i ia of the holder member iiia ii when the two parts are assembled together. is preferable that the length of the slots 2 3a be somewhat longer than the telescoped distance of the holder member We. Thus the resilient and frictional factor in this construction to all extents W and purposes will operate practically the same as in the first disclosed form.
One ofthe advantages of this modified form is that the stick material ltd, indicated in dotted outline, has considerable more'rooni to operate'ld within the cap Ma, and there is therefore less chance for the stick material to contact and smear the inner wall of said cap Eta. To preclude air pockets being formed in the socket of the holder member ida when the sticii: material an lSa is assembled therein, a small lateral opening 26 may be drilled into the wall Eda adjacent the base thereof. 1
It will be obvious from these constructions that in spite of the fact that the wood may swell an by absorption of moisture or contract due to drylog out, there will always be assured a dependable frictional fit between the holder and cap. This is a requisite that has to be assured in using wooden containers especially for'lipstick matc- 30 rial as it would create'a very objectionable condition in carrying such items around in pocketbooks or handbags in case the containers should come apart and allow the muse to stain the inside and articles contained within such hand- 35 bags; or on the other hand in case the container swell and bind to such an extent that the container could not be opened for access to the rouge.
The two forms of containers are here shown Q0 as being applicable to a wood construction. but it is to be understood that the inventive features can equally be adaptable to containers'made of other material such as the various plastics, etc, and further the invention is not to be limited to 65 the present disclosures but may be susceptible to other mechanical details without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is here claimed. w
I claim:
1. A two-piece container comprising a cupped holder member having a cylindrical wall and a cover member having a counterbor'e at its open end in which the counterbore is slightly tapered 65 and of a mean diameter substantially approximating the outside diameter of said wall, said wall having'one or more axial slots extending substantially its entire length to allow said well to give inwardly coincident with the assembly of the holder and cover members.

A. two-piece container comprising a cupped holder member having a cylindrical wall and a cover member having a oounterbore at its open end in which the counterbore is slightly tapered a and of a mean diameter substantially approximating the outside diameter of said wall, said wall having a pair of diametrically opposed longitudlnal slots provided therein to allow said wall to give inwardly coincident with the assembly of 7o v the holder and cover members.

Qfidddiid which said cylindrical wall is adapted to telescope, said wall provided with one or more longitudinal slots whereby said wall may be sprung substantially in conformity to the taper of said counterbore and create a frictional binding efiect between said holder and cap members when assembled,
a. A two-piece container comprising a cupped holder member having a cylindrical wall and a cover member having its open end counterbored to provide a slightly tapering wall into which said cylindrical wall is adapted to telescope, said and said wall provided with one or more slots to allow the cylindrical wall to resiliently give in conformity with said tapering wall and frictionally engage therewith.
5, A twc piece container comprising a cupped holder member having a cylindrical wall and a cover member in which the inner wall surface adjacent its open end is formed on a slight taper, said cylindrical wall adapted to telescope within said tapering surface and provided with one or more axial slots to allow said cylindrical wall to resiliently give in conformity with said tapering surface and frictionally engage therewith.
6. A two-piece container comprisiri a cupped holder member for holding a stick of cosmetic material and a cover member having telescopic engagement with each other, one of said members having its telescopic wall portion of a cylindrical shape and the telescopic portion of the other member formed on a slight taper having a mean diameter substantially equal to the diameter of said cylindrical portion.

A two-piece container comprising a cupped holder member for holding a stick of cosmetic material and a cover member having telescopic engagement with each other, one of said members having a telescopic wall portion of a cylindrical shape and the telescopic portion of the other member formed on a slight taper having a mean diameter substantially equal to the diameter of said cylindrical portion, one of the telescopic wall portions of said members provided with one or more longitudinal slots whereby said slotted wall portion may give in conformity with said other portion upon assembly of said members.
8. A two-piece container comprising a cupped holder member having a tapered outside wall and a cover member having an interior cylindrical diameter substantially equal to the mean diameter of said holder member tapered wall,
one of said members having one or more longitudinal slots therein whereby thewall portion can give in conformity with the difference of the telescopic wall portions.

A two-piece container comprising a cupped holder member having a tapered outside wall and a cover member having an interior diameter substantially equal to the mean diameter of said holder member tapered wall, the adjacent end of said cover having one or more longitudinal axial slots therein whereby the telescopic wall portion of the cap member can give in conformity with th tapered wall of said holder member. 10. A container as defined by claim 9 wherein the length of the axial slots is greater than the telescopic distance of said holder member.
11. In a device for holding a stick material of a plastic nature comprising a cupped shaped holder of wood having its inner wall surface left in'an unfinished state and having its inner diam- 12. In a device for holding a stick material of a plastic nature comprising a cupped shaped iolder of wood having its inner wall surface left in an unfinished state and having its inner diameter of a size to freely receive the normal diameter of said material, the base of said holder having-an inwardly projecting portion tapering throughout its entire area and designed to swage the adjacent end of said stick material outwardly into firm engagement with the inner unfinished wall of said holder when said material is axially forced into said holder, and vent means in said cupped part adjacent said base to preclude any air pockets being formed therein when said material is assembled.

In a two-piece cylindrical container made of a wooden or like material comprising a cupped holder for. stick material of a plastic nature having a normal diameter comparable to the interior of said holder and in which the interior of the cupped holder is leftsubstantially unfinished to present a roughened or natural grain structure surface, and a cover member having a resilient frictional detachable slip connection with said holder, the base portion of said cupped holder being formed with a convex spherical surface designed to cause the adjacent end of said stick material upon axial assembly to be forced outwardly into jammed engagement and becoming more or less embedded into the roughened or grain structure of the holder interior for a secure anchorage and to maintain the material in a centrallized position relative to said cover when in an. assembled position.
14. In a two-piece wooden container as defined by claim 13 wherein means is provided in the side wall of the cupped holder adjacent its base end 'to vent the same coincident with the assembly of the plastic material thereinto.
