Description

Sept. 29, 1964 D. A. SEAVER COSMETIC CONTAINER Filed June 29, 1962 INVENTOR ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,15%,771 CGSMETKC CQNTAINER Donald A. eaver, West Cheshire, Conn, assignor to Scovill Manufacturing on1pany, Waterbury, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Filed .lune 29, 1%2, Ser. No. 296,256 2 (Ilaims. (QB. ass-s This invention relates to a cosmetic container and particularly to one adapted to contain cosmetic material of a highly volatile nature.
Cosmetic materials in stick form, such as deodorants, cologne, eye shadow pomades and the like, usually contain important ingredients of a high volatile nature that readily evaporate when exposed to the air, thereby reducing the etfectiveness of the cosmetic.
It is, therefore, one of the objects of this invention to provide a cosmetic container in which the cosmetic material will be tightly sealed when the container is closed, thus preventing evaporation of the volatile ingredients.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side view of a cosmetic container embodying my invention;
FIG. 2 is a larger view of the same with the cover in section and in closed position with a portion of the container sectionalized;
FIG. 3 is a similar View with the cover partially removed; and,
FIG. 4 is a partial side and sectional view of the sealing ring, per se.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 11 designates generally a holder, and the numeral 11 a cover or closure cap adapted to fit over a portion of the holder. The holder may be a drawn metal shell or molded plastic material, and is provided with a hollow or a recess into which is fitted a cosmetic dispenser 12 of the conventional propel-and-repel type, carrying the pomade material 13 in a carrier cup 14.
More specifically, the holder 10 consists of an enlarged base portion 15 adapted to be grasped by the fingers, and an upper tubular neck portion 16 of reduced size, providing a shoulder 17 therebetween. The cosmetic dispenser 12 may be attached to and operated by the holder 10 and is secured thereto by forcing the enlarged end 18 of the inside shell 19 into the neck portion 16 of said holder 10.
To obtain the desired air-tight seal for the container, the intermediate portion of the neck 16 is formed with an external thread 20. Between the threaded section 20 and the shoulder 17, a continuous circular rib 21 projects outwardly from said neck portion. For reasons as will appear later, it is necessary for the crest diameter of the rib 21 to be somewhat greater than the crest diameter of the external thread 20.
A liner 22 of pliable plastic material is provided that is fitted tightly into the open end of the cap 11, and if necessary, may be held in place by a suitable adhesive. The inside of the liner 22 is formed with an internal thread 23 for co-operation with the external thread 20 on the 3,15%,771 Patented Sept. 29, 1964 holder neck 16 when assembling the closure cap to the holder. The lower end of liner 22 is formed with an uninterrupted annular lip 24 that has an outside diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the cap 11, thus providing an annular space 25 between said lip and the inner surface of the cap 11. The inside diameter of the lip 24 is somewhat less than the outside diameter of the rib 21 and is provided with a tapering entrance end 24a that aids in guiding the cap 11 over the end of the container 12 and over the rib 21. Inasmuch as the material thickness of the lip 24 is less than the thickness of the liner, it imparts thereto a degree of resiliency that allows it to expand outwardly over the rib 21 into the annular space 25 so that the lip 24- tightly embraces said rib thereby establishing a leak-proof seal between the cap 11 and the holder 10.
When the liner 22 is assembled into the closure cap 11, its axial insertion is limited by a stop bead 26 formed inwardly of the wall of the closure cap 11. Preferably, the position of the stop head 26 is such that when the liner is fully assembled, the lower end of the resilient lip 24 will extend slightly beyond the open end of the closure cap 11, as noted in FIG. 3. Thus, it will be apparent that when the closure cap 11, as seen in FIG. 2, is threaded home upon the holder 10, another seal in addition to that obtained by the frictional engagement of the circular rib 21 with the inner surface of said lip, will be provided by the extended end of the liner lip 24 bearing against the shoulder 17.
What I claim is:
1. In a container for cosmetic material of a volatile nature comprising (a) a cosmetic holder having a base port-ion and an upper neck portion of less diameter to provide a shoulder therebetween, said upper neck portion having external threads and a circular rib between said threads and said shoulder;
(b) a closure cap fitted over the upper neck portion of said holder; and,
(c) a liner of pliable plastic material fitted tightly in the open end of the cap, said liner having internal threads adapted to engage with said external threads on the neck portion, and an uninterrupted resilient annular lip portion below said threads which is spaced from the inner surface of said cap and adapted to tightly embrace said rib to form a seal therebetween.
2. In a container for cosmetic material as defined in claim 1 wherein the resilient lip portion of said liner initially is extended slightly beyond the open end of said closure cap and adapted to abut said holder shoulder as a secondary seal.
