ares
` VANITY CASE.
Application led March 1f?, 1.923: Serial No.56255-S02.
'this Vinvention relates to vanity cases. One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character' described, with neat and suitable means for shielding the con- 5 tainer for the cosmetic from dirt and other foreign matter.
Another object thereof is to provide a device of the character described having the shielding means hereinafter referred to and which shall yet be simple in construction and neat in appearance.
Other objects of this invention will be in partobvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, co-mbination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the append- 23 ed claims.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vanity case embodying the invention shown in open position, with the powder puff removed.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken along line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the vanity case there shown is seen to comprise a container or receptacle 10, in which is held the cosmetic 11, which is usually a compact face powder in the form of a hard mass or block of the material, as shown in the drawing. 12 indicates the cover member which is spring` hinged to the container as at 13 in any suitable manner to permit the cover to snap in close position on the container. On the interior face of the cover is held a mirror 14 in a frame 15, or in any other suitable manner. A lining member lis provided on the interior of the receptacle 10, this member consisting preferably in a continuous hollow itl frame of cardboard or the like material, similar in shape to the shape ofthe container and fitted thereinto with the walls thereof extending beyond the walls of the container as at 16 so that when the cover is closed on the container it ts over the extended walls of the lining member and is flushk with the walls of the containerso as to form a neat and continuous vanity case,
For protecting and shielding the interior of the container portion 10, I provide a guard member 17 in the form of a shaped piece of light sheet material, preferably cel-7 luloid, and having ifiat: -portion 18 adapted to abutagainst the walls of the container 10 and depressed annular portion 19 extending to and resting on the cosmetic 11, and bounding a central opening 20 in the guard member through which the cosmetic may be reached. Due to the shape of the cosmetic block the portion 19 acts as a centering it sans to normally retain same in position and in spaced relation with the wall-16. ils-o it will be seen that this guard or shield member completely protects the interior of the container 10'leaving exposed only the compact powder which is to be used.
lt has been found that in the use of vanity cases of this character the granules or small particles of the compact become loosened from the top of the compact piece and'drop into the bottom of the container. Then the container is then opened the small particles drop out causing considerable annoyance and inconvenience. The guard member in addition to preventing any foreign matter from entering` the container will also trap any granules of the compact that may drop to the bottom of the container as just eX- plained.
'lt will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the very objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adaptedA to meet the conditions in practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made'of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set fort-h, it is to be understood that il.
all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
TWhat l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cosmetic container comprising a receptacle having a bot-tom and vertical walls and a cover hinged thereto, a lining for said container arranged adjacent and projecting above the vert-ical walls, a guard plate formed with a central opening engaging said liningto retain the latterin position,- the inner peripheral edge portion of said guard plate being bent downwardly to engage a. cosmetic block, and a mirror fined in said cover.
2. In combination, a container having a @over and cesmet@ block, having a curved upper face arranged in said Container, a liner for said container, and a guard plate engaging said liner and projecting inwardly to engage the Curved face of said cosmetic block, and a mirror fixed in said cover.
3. In combination, a container having a cover and a cosmetic block having a curved upper face arranged in said Container, a liner for said container, and retaining means for said liner comprising a plate formed with a central opening, the inner peripheral edge portion o' said plate being adapted to engage the Curved face of said cosmetic block.
Ll. In combination, a container having a cover and a cosmetic block arranged in said container and being spaced` from the Walls thereof, a liner for said Walls, and a guard plate formed with a central opening through whichY said cosmetic block extends engaging said'liner and retaining the latter in Vposition.
