This invention relates to combined cosmetic and mirror holder or the like and more particularly for a cosmetic for human lips commonly known as lipstick.

Among other objects, the invention aims to provide a new and improved lipstickholder and mirror having provision for protecting the lipstick and mirror when not in use, while bringing both into position for ready use when desired.

A further object is the provision of a unique mirror retaining member which at the same time serves as an ejector button for the lipstick and which is adapted for a variety of ornamentation and configuration.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, taken together with the accompanying drawings, of a combined lipstick and mirror holder illustrative of the invention, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred form of the invention in closed position;

Figure 2 is a, separated perspective view of the holder base and cover in separated relation, the mirror being shown open;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view assembled device as seen in Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a cross-section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is a somewhat diagrammatic perspective view of one form of hinge spring arrangement employable with the invention.

Referring in detail to the illustrative construction shown in the drawings, the numeral I!) indicates a base for a lipstick support which also includes a lipstick barrel H, the base and barrel being advantageously formed of lightweight sheet metal. In this instance, the base and barrel are of rectangular box-like formation. A longitudinal cut, providing a slot I2, is made in one face of the barrel opening into its distal end l3 and continuing for a short distance as at l4 up one side of the enlarged base end 22 and into the adjacent face of the latter, l9.

Within the hollow interior of the base and barrel is located a metal cup l5 providing a mount for the lipstick itself l5, which latter may be of the usual material appropriate for application to a womans lips, and which, since it is not the essential part of the present invention, need not be further described, it being suflicient to state here that the lipstick I6 is readily pur-, chasable and may either originally or as a refill be associated with the device of the present invention by inserting the lipstick into the barrel H with one end of the lipstick, that is, its inner of the 1 Claim. (Cl. 132-79) end, inserted into the cup or socket-like mount l5, by a snug force fit.

The cup l5 has a slide member in the form of a lug H, which extends outwardly through the slot |2l4 and sufiiciently outwardly of the slot l2 so that when the cup is retracted, as shown in Figure 3, the button l8 on the lug I! just overlies the base wall IS, in accordance with the present invention which will now be more particularly pointed out.

The companion part of the part just described comprises a box-like cover or container 20, having continuous rectangular walls upon five of its sides and having an open end 2| at its sixth side, which is one of its smaller ends and by which it is adapted to telescope over the barrel ll, thereby receiving the barrel within its hollow interior with the end 2| of the container 20 abutting the wall 22 of the base ill, at which time the lug I1 is retracted into the slot part II. The part 20 may be also of light sheet metal.

Upon one of its walls, and in accordance with the present invention, upon its wall 23, which overlies the slot l2, the container 20 has hinged thereto as at 24, along one of its longitudinal edges an auxiliary cover plate 25 made up of an outer wall 26 and an inner frame 21 for a mirror or reflector member 28. In this instance, the mirror 28 is of the usual silvered glass construction andis insertable into the frame 21 through an open end 29 thereof, by means of which the mirror can be removed when desired for cleaning or replacement and returned to position Or a new one inserted as desired.

When the mirror is closed, that is, when the plate 25 is swung to position abutting and lapping the container inner wall 23, the mirror is held in this position by the button l8 on the lug l1 which when the barrel and container are reciprocally telescoped, overlies closely the outer wall 26 of the mirror frame as well as the wall IQ of the base. In closed position removal of the,

mirror is desirably prevented, as clearly seen by the drawings.

As indicated in Figure 5, the hinge 24 is desirably a spring hinge, and, as here shown, may comprise a strip 30 of spring metal, such as brass, having one end anchored as by soldering it within a hinge sleeve 3| integral with the: container wall 23. After being twisted in the direction of the arrow 32, the spring strip is anchored as by soldering or welding within a hinge sleeve 33 which is integral with the mirror frame 21. The spring strip may pass freely through intermediate intercalated

34 and 35 may be viewed in the mirror 28 while this is being done.

It will be understood that the lipstick as it is used up may have its distal end brought outwardly of the barrel end It sufliciently to permit application of the lipstick to the lips by sliding it by means of the slide member I8. When, however, the lipstick has been used and it is desired to re assemble the device into position as in Figure 1, the slide I8 may be manually retracted into the slot part M, or, if not so manually retracted, it will be automatically retracted by the container 20 as the latter is telescoped over the barrel H. While this is being done, the mirrorp-late 25 may be held closed until it is engaged under the button l8, whereupon, it is held in closed position until the lipstick is again withdrawn therefrom,- at which time the mirror again springs automati cally into open position for use.

So constructed and arranged the device is highly compact and the lipstick and mirror are protected so as to be safely dropped into a Womans pocket, hand-bag or cosmetic case without danger of becoming accidentally opened and permitting the lipstick to smear other contents thereof By making the spring hinge 24 with a, relatively strong spring effect, as by the construction'here shown, theforce of the spring operating through the mirror plate 25 and the button I8 retains the container in position under the button I8 so as to guard against accidental exposure of the lip-- stick. At the same time, by making the lug I! to slide not too freely in the slot |2|-'l, both the button and container are retained in position closely adjacent the base Hl until it is desired to manipulate the device into open position as already explained.

The metal surfaces of the parts referred to lend themselves to attractive ornamentation or to manufacture in the precious metals, such as, gold, silver or platinum. The button I 8 may be attractively overlayed with an ornamental stone or jewel-like member 38, for example, which might also in more expensive adaptations of the invention be a jewel such as a sapphire or the like. For less expensive embodiments of the invention, the surfaces of the metal amel and the form of the parts might be varied from the rectangular outline here illustrated, as desired.

The foregoing suggested and such other changes as will be apparent to workers in the art may be made as fall within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the invention.

The invention, having been described, what is here claimed is:

A combined lip-stick holder and mirror comprising a casing-like support, a slidable mount for a lip-stick in said support, an elongated container receiving telescopically the support and mount, a mirror frame hinged along one edge of said container for carrying a mirror on the inner face of said-frame, said hinge including intercalated aligned hinge sleeves extending along one of the longer adjacent longitudinal edges of each. of said mirror frame and container and including a relatively strong spring urging the mirror frame to open position, said spring comprisingatorsion stripextending the greater part of the lengthoi said longitudinal edge, and a button on said mount projecting outwardly thereof and adapted to overlie the mirror frame to retain it in closed position against the action of the torsion strip spring when the support and mount are telescoped into the container, said spring exerting a frictional force on the button tending to revent separation of the support and container, and

whereby the spring passes through intermediate ones of said hinge sleeves and is concealed thereby.
