is designated 1, and
Patented Sept. 30}, 1924 CHARLES H. SHERMAN, OF NORTH ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
I COMB AND KNIFE CASING.
Application filed April 15, 1922. Serial No. 553,276.
T 0 (1H whom "it may concern Be it known that I, GHARLES H. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts. have invented a new and useful Comb and Knife Casing, of which the following is a' specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel article having a comb and knife combined in a single case. and having the novel arrangement of parts disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which .Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case in closed position;
ig. 2 is an end elevation of the top end of the device;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the opposite end of the device;
Fig. 4.is a longitudinal section through the device with a portion of the comb-holder member also in section; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-section through the case with the knife and comb in their closed position. i
Like numerals indicate like'parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a casing, preferably in part or whole of precious metal, which as an entity which has asuspending ring 2 provided at one end as illustrated in Figs. 1. 2 and 4. Within casing 1 is an inner or knife-holding case 17 of suitable base metahwhich carries a pivot 6 on which knife 7 is pivotally mounted. I provide a spring 5. the free end of which bears against the shank of knife 7. and tends to cause it to I move to either a closed position, or to a posit'Ion at right angles to the case, or to a full open position, in the conventional manner.
Spring 5 is attached to inner case 17 at the end nearest the point of the knife blade, as shown in Fig. 4.
In manufacturing the article. the inner or knifeholding case 17 is inserted in the outer casing 1. from the comb side. with the blade protruding through a suitable burred slot on the edge of the case 1. Case 17 is softsoldered into the casing 1.
. The walls of inner case 17 provide a knife chamber designated as 4, and opposite which chamber is provided the comb chamber 3, wherein is contained comb 12. Comb 12 is seated in the comb case 11, which case is provided with a tongue 13 slightly recessed on opposite sides, and adapted to snap into releasable locked engagement with the opposite flanges 14 of main casing 1. as shown 1n Figs. 1 and 2. The shank of comb case 11 is provided with a pivot ring or extension. pivotal-1y mounted on pivot- 8, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings;
hen the comb case 11 with its comb 12 is swung to a full open position, it is in direct alinement with the casing 1, and is firmly held in such longitudinally alined position by the abutment of end 10 with the adjacent end portion 15 of the casing 1 and inner knife case 17, as shown in Fig. 4. The
comb 12 is snugly held in comb case 11 permitting the insertion of a comb of any desired fineness. The suspending ring 2 may be used for attaching the device to a ribbon or chain for conveniently carrying the artied in on. side of said casing and including a spring element having its free end engaging the shank of the knife to control its operation. t-he first-named casing having a slot through which the knife may open.
2. As a new article ofmanufacture, a casing adapted for containing both a knife and a comb. and adapted to be carried as an article of jewelry. a suspending ring on one end thereof. a comb case pivotally mounted on the casing and adapted tosnugly carry the comb therein. said comb case having a tongue oppositely recessed and the outer casmg having an oppositely flanged portion with which the comb tongue is adapted to releasably lock. and a knife case seated in and substantially concealed by the outer casing, the said knife case being adapted to carry a knife.
3. As a new article of manufacture, in a device of the class described, the combination of an outer casing partly or wholly of precious metal, a comb case pivotally mounted on said casing and having a'tongue adapted to snap into locked engagement with this main casing when the comb case is moved to closed position, and adapted to receive a comb snugly in the comb case, a knife case of base metal seated within and soft-soldered to the outer casing, said knife case having a flat spring aflixfed to said knife case in proximity to the knife point and the said case being adapted to receive a knife, and the outer casing having a burred slot of suitable length to admit the knife to the knife case, the said spring being in operative engagement with the knife, said spring also functioning as a partition member to form one of the walls of the knife chamber and separate it from the chamber in which the comb is contained when in closed position;
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a thin outer casing, a knife case concealed in and soft-soldered to the said casing and adapted to carry a knife pivotally mounted in said case, said knife case having a spring the free end of which is pohaving its shank alined with the shank of the main casing, and adapted to snugly hold a comb and for swinging the comb into a concealed position within the thin outer casing when the comb case is moved to a closed position, and a suspending ring suitably po-.
sitioned for conveniently carrying the device as an article of jewelry.
5. In combination with the device described in claim 4, the free end of the combholding case having a'tongue for releasably locking the said case in closed position in relationto the rest of the structure, sub
stantially as shown. 7
