This invention relates to a container for lipsticks and-like articles. The present improvements have to do with the provision of a mirrorpanel forming part of the container, adapted 5 with each removal of the lipstick or other article to swing out to a position of exposure, and there-v after, with each replacement of the lipstick or other article, to return to its closure position, these panel movements taking place automatically. In the accomplishment of this purpose I have utilized a construction which is simple, inexpensive, easily assembled, and dependable in its operation. A suggestive embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in the manner following:

The present construction is adapted for enclosing and protecting an article A such as a lipstick which may be adjustably supported in a 0 holder H slidingly fitted within a container C in the form of an elongated case having one open end and one open side. The holder may be of conventional form'in that it comprises a square tube open at one end for slidingly receiving a cap D afiixed to one end of the lipstick or other article. As shown, the holder is provided on one side with an elongated slot I through which extends a pin 8. This pin also traverses the cap D and extends therebeyond and through a slot in a head E fixedly secured to the holder and adapted to close the open end of the case (see Figs. 1

and 3) By pulling upon the head the holder and contained lipstick may be withdrawn from the case; thereafter if the pin be advanced longi- 50 tudinally of the holder slot, as by pushing upon a head 9 at the pin end, the lipstick may be advanced, as desired.

Into the case just described is fitted a channeled insert I having two side walls l0 and a 55 connecting wall ll. Lugs l2 struck from the filler which is desirably associated with the conside walls may be extended upwardly beyond the connecting wall, as best shown in Fig. 6. This insert is positioned in the case with the connecting wall adjacent the open side thereof, but inset therefrom, as shown in Fig. 2. The eiiect is that of a recess in the case side which, but for the presence of the filler, would be entirely open. The edges of the case adjacent its open side are provided with narrow inturned flanges against the-underside of which the lugs I! may abut, thereby securing the insert in a'fixed position as shown.

The length of the insert is somewhat less than that of the case so that with the outer insert end flush with the open end of the case, its inner end l5 lies spaced from the closed end of the case. Adjacent this inner end of the insert, and in a plane between its connecting wall and the flanged edges of the case, is a pintle l6 extending transversely thereacross providing a pivotal mounting for a panel P which forms a closure for the open side of the case. This panel, as shown, is in the form of a thin channel l1 mounting a mirror I8. With the panel in closure position (see Figs. 1 to 5), the mirror is hidden from view and fully protected. Inasmuch as the panel is pivoted to swing upon the pintle, its end a proximate to the closed end of the case must swing inwardly, whereas the opposite panel end I) swings outwardly to an exposed position. The mirror which extends within the end portion 1) of the panel is accordingly swung outwardly for exposure, all as appears clearly in Fig. 2. To produce these opening movements I employ a spring l9 coiled around the pintle with one end bearing against the connecting wall of the insert and the other against the panel.

With the lipstick fitted in place, as shown in Fig. 3, the holder extends within the filler for the full length of the case. In this position it lies adjacent the panel end a, thereby preventing any inward movement thereof with a consequent outward movement of the mirror. If desired, the panel may be formed at its end a with a return wall 20 whose under face (see Fig. 3) lies in a, plane substantially coincident with the upper. face of the connecting wall I of the insert, whereby to assure perfect closure position of the panel when the holder is engaged therewith. Upon withdrawal of the holder (see Fig. 4), the panel is free to swing in response totension of the spring whereupon it executes a movement of 90 or thereabouts up to the point that it engages with the end I5 01 the filler. The outward panel movement is thereupon arrested. The mirror is return of the lipstick and holder to inserted position within the filler, the end ll of the holder will engage the down end a of the panel, thereby swinging the panel around. counter to the tension of the spring, until the mirror is again returned to hiddenposition, as shown in Fig. 3. Operation of the panel is therefore fully automatic in that it follows the in and out movements of the holder. It is of minor importance whether the lipstick be fully retracted in the holder at the time. the latter is fitted back into the case because, if the lipstick be protruded, its exposed end upon engaging the closed end of the case will force the lipstick back into retracted position, permitting the holder to advance fully within the filler.

The present construction is very simple, it involves but few parts, and the assembly thereof may be performed with very little time and effort. Once put together, the article will operate with certainty, with no attention whatsoever, and may be counted on to serve dependably through a long period of use.

I claim:

1. An article container comprising an elongated case open upon one side and at one end, a closure for the open side comprising a panel fitted therewlthin and pivoted intermediately of its ends to the case for swinging movement through substantially and an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end adapted when advanced into the case to engage the pivoted panel to swing it into closed position. I

An article container comprising an elongated case open upon one side and at one end, a closure for the open side comprising a panel fitted therewithin and pivoted between its ends to the case for swinging movement to a transverse position whereby to present one end within the case and its opposite end exteriorly thereof, spring means urging the panel to swing to transverse position, and an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end adapted when advanced into the case to engage the panel end therewithin to turn the panel back to closed position and upon further ad- 'vance to secure thepanel in such position.

3. An article container comprising an elongated case open upon one side and at one end,'

a sunken wall affixed along the open case side for a portion only of its length, a closure for the open side case comprising a panel fitted over the sunken wall and extending beyond one end thereof, a pivotal connection between the panel and case at a point adjacent the said end of the sunken wall permitting the panel to swing to a substantially transverse portion into engagement with the said end of the sunken wall where its movement is stopped, and an article holder slidable into and out. of the case through its open end adapted when advanced into the case beyond the said end of the sunken wall to engage the panel end therebelow to turn the panel back to closure position and upon further advance to secure the panel in such position.

4. An article container comprising an elongated case open upon one side. and at one end, a channel filler in the case with its connecting wall across the open side of the case and inset therefrom, the filler extending from the open case end to a point short of the closed end of the case, a closure for the open case side extending for the length thereof and arranged over the connecting wall of the filler, the closure comto the closed end of the case whereby the panel" may swing out to a transverse position with one end disposed within the case for engagement with the adjacent filler end, and an article holder slidable into and out of the filler through the open case end adapted when advanced thereinto to secure the panel in closure position.

5. An article holder comprising an elongated case open upon one end and at one side the edges of which are flanged, a channel filler of less length than the case fitted therewithin with its connecting wall across the open side of the case and inset from the flanged edges thereof, means extending between the filler and flanged edges of the case serving to position the filler fixedly within the case, the inner filler end being spaced appreciably from the closed end of the case, a closure for the open case side comprising a panel fitted therewith adjacent the connecting wall, a pivotal support for the panel adjacent the inner filler end permitting the panel to swing to transverse position against said filler end, and means slidably received within the filler adapted to engage the panel "to prevent swinging movement thereof.

6. An article container comprising a case open at one end, a panel having a spring-hinged connection with the case adapted normally to swing outwardly therefrom, an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end, and means extending from the panel into the case engageable by the article holder when the latter is advanced into the case to swing the panel back to a position adjacent the case.
