smoxna's COMBINATION.
Application filed July 1, 1927. Serial No. 202,820.
This invention relates to a smokers. combination and comprises all improvements over the prior art which are disclosed in this application.
One object is to produce a neat, attractive and useful article that will appeal to smokers The above and other objects which will hereinafter appear, are attained by the new and useful improvements disclosed in this application. To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand the essential charac-v teristics of the improvements, drawings have been annexed as part of this disclosure.
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the combination all closed except one folding cigarette U holder.-
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the combination showing one mode of use.
Fig. 3 is a central sectional view parallel to the front of the case.
Fig. 4 is a left end view of the combination shown in Fig. 2 and as attached to a wall.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the wall attaching plate. I
Fig. 6 is a perspective viewof the match book holding plate beforeit is secured to the case body.
Fig. 7 is a modified construction for holding a lighted cigarette subject to vibration.
The particular embodiment of the invention which is herein disclosed is as follows. The case body 1 has a vertical partition 2 which divides the inside into a. cigarette compartment 3 and an ash compartment 4.
Hinged to the top of the case body 1 at 5 is a cover 6 normally held closed by coil spring 7. Secured'to cover 6 is a cigarette holder 8, secured in any desired way as by rivets 9. The case body and the cover have snap latch parts 10, 11 by which the cover can be held closed. The cover and case body are cut away at 13, 14, so that even when the cover is closed, cigarette ashes can be dropped or knocked off into the ash compartment.
In cigarette compartment 3 is a spring pressed lifting or follower plate 15 preferably attached to, and normally urged upward by, coil springs 16. One or both of springs 16 may also be attached to the case near the bottom if desired.
Hinged to ears 17 is a folding cigarette holder 18 with an extended lip 19 designed to enter notches 20 in the .top of the case body under the cover 6, thus partially covering the upper part of the compartment 4. Se!
liability of match book .shut. When. cover 6 is curedto inside of the case by rivet 21 or otherw se, 1s a leaf spring 22 adapted to cooperate with cigarette holder 18" to hold it in either closed oropen position as desired in a manner similar to the way a knife blade is held in open or closed posltion in an ordinary pocket knife. When in open position the end 23 engages against the case to limit the downward swing of the holder to approximately horizontal as in Fig. 2.
Folding cigarette holder 24 operates in a manner similar to cigarette holder 18. Leaf spring 25 is preferably beveled at 26 to avoid catching against plate 15, and the other end is preferably beveled at 45 to permit easy insertion of cigarettes in the cigarette compartment 3.
At the lower end of the ash compartment is an ash release door 27 hinged at 28 and normallv held closed by coiled spring 29. This door has a finger hold 30 to aid in readily swinging the door open against action of spring 29 to empty the ashes.
Secured to the front of the case is a match book holding plate 31 attached in any suitable way, as for example by integral lugs 32 adapted to be riveted in corresponding slots in the case body in a manner well known to mechanics. Fig. 4 clearly shows how the 33 is held in place by the cover 34 having been first slid down through slot 35 between platev 31 and the case body 1.
By inserting cigarettes or a package of cigarettes 36 and forcing down against sprin pressed plate 15, the cover 6 can be snappe pressed plate 15 lifts the cigarettes 36 way as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. When the cover is in this open position a cigarette 37 can be placed between the cigarette holder 8 and cover 6 as shown in Fig. 4.
When it is desired to attach the case to a wall position, an attaching plate 38 has a tongue 39 inserted through an outwardly pressed portion 40 of the case. This attachthrown open, spring up part i ing plate 38 has a well known hole 41, slot 42 construction for engagement and disengagement with .screw 43. If it is intended that one or more of the holders 8, 18, 24 for lighted cigarettes, is to be used'while the case is attached to an automobile that is in motion, then such holders 7 can be made of very thin spring brassso as to gently engage the sides of the cigarette at 44 to prevent the cigarette from falling off due to vibration of the automobile.
Theinvention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiment is therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes'which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
I claim: I
1. In a smokers combination, a case having a compartment for) cigarettes, a compartment for ashes, a cover for the cigarette and ash compartments, and a foldin cigarette holder attached to the outside of t e case, the
v ash compartment and cover being so constructed that when said cigarette holder is in swung down position the ash compartment is adapted to receive ashes whether the cover is open or closed.
2. In a smokers combination, a case having a compartment for cigarettes with a cover therefor and a cigarette holder attached to said cover, and designed to hold a cigarette whether the cover be in closed or open position.
3. In a smokers combination, a case having a compartment for cigarettes with a hinged cover therefor, and a cigarette holder attached to said cover, a portion of said cigarette holder adapted to cooperate with the cover to hold a cigarette when the cover is in open position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
