SMOKER'S WRIST COMPACT Filed April 1. 1955 Helen L. Bass INVENTOR.
United States Patent SMOKERS WRIST COMPACT I Helen L. Bass, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Amalgamated Bass Prince Inventions, Inc., Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application April 1, 1955, Serial No. 498,504 1 Claim. (Cl. 131-235) My invention relates to improvements in wrist compacts for cigarette smokers.
An important object of my invention is to provide a wrist compact embodying all of the prerequisites for cigarette smoking conveniently arranged within easy reach of one hand while being attached to a wrist or arm.
Still another object is to provide a compact for accomplishing the above and which embodies eflicient means for extinguishing lighted cigarettes without danger of starting a fire or burning holes in bedclothes, or furniture, by sparks from the cigarettes.
Still another object is to provide in such a compact clamping means for preserving cigarette butts in a readily accessible position for retrieving for smoking when desired.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved smokers wrist compact with the lid of the ash receiving and disposal tray partly open to show the inside of the tray;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in longitudinal vertical section illustrating the lid of the ash receiving and disposal tray closed and the cigarette clamping means in use;
Figure 3 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical longitudinal section illustrating the cigarette butt clamping means in releasing position;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the stump clamping means in releasing position; and.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a cigarette lighter forming part of the compact.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the compact of my invention comprises a rectangular box body 1 divided by a horizontal partition 3 into a rectangular top ash receiving and disposal tray 5, open at its top, and a bottom rectangular cigarette case 7 with an open end 8 at one end 9 of the body 1. A rectangular lid 11 for the tray 5 is hinged at one end 13, as at 15, to the end 9 of said body 1 and is adapted to be closed by a spring catch 17 on its other end 19 adapted to snap into a keeper notch 20 in the other end 21 of the body 1.
A sliding drawer 23 is provided in the cigarette case 7 for sliding into and out of the open end 8 of said case and its bottom is corrugated transversely of the drawer to provide troughs 25 therein for holding cigarettes 26 for withdrawing out of the case 7 sidewise when the drawer 23 is slid out of said open end 8. The drawer 23 is provided with a front end 27 closing the end 8 of the cigarette case 7 when the drawer is completely retracted into the case 7. A spring catch 29 on said front end 27 is adapted to snap into a keeper notch 31 in the bottom of the parti tion 3 to yieldingly retain the drawer 23 retracted into 2,843,134 Patented July 15, 1958 ICC the case 7. A finger grip slot 33 is provided in the front end 27 for insertion of a finger therein for sliding the drawer 23. Sides 24 on the drawer 23 close the ends of the troughs 25.
A conventional pull-apart flint lighter 35 is provided for fitting in the foremost trough 23 and which may be of any suitable construction.
The cigarette extinguishing means comprises a tubular socket 37 depending from the lid 11 partway into the ash receiving and disposal tray 5 and is provided with a bottom wire screen 39. The socket 37 is of a size to loosely receive the lighted end of a cigarette 41 held perpendicular to the lid 11 and for manual rotation to rotate its lighted end in the socket 37 against the screen 39 to snuff said lighted end.
The butt clamping means comprises a longitudinal clamping groove 43 in the lid 11 extending from one side of the socket 37 and into which the butt of a cigarette 41 extinguished in the socket 37 may be secured by a channeled clamping finger 45 complemental to said groove. The clamping finger 45 is hinged, as at 47, to a bracket 49, on the opposite side of the socket 37 for swinging to act as a guide for insertion of a lighted butt of a cigarette 41 in the socket 37 for extinguishing, or to coact with the groove 43 to clamp the extinguished butt of the cigarette 41 for preserving said butt, all as described in the following.
The clamping finger 45 is swingable in one direction on the hinge 47 downwardly of the lid 11 into overlying relation to the socket 37 and the groove 43 parallel with the latter to clamp the butt of the cigarette 41 in said groove 43, as shown in Figure 2. In the clamping position of said finger 45, an enlarged portion 51 thereon engages the top of the lid 11 and together with the bracket 49 forms a guard over the top of the socket 37 to prevent sparks from escaping past the butt of the cigarette 41 from the socket. A suitable coil spring 53 on the pintle 55 of the hinge 47 urges the clamping finger 45 into clamping position.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the clamping finger 45 is swingable on its hinge 47 upwardly of the lid 11 into a position perpendicular thereto in which position it parallels the socket 37 and forms a guide for inserting a cigarette 41 in the socket 37. As will be seen, the clamping finger 45 may be swung upwardly to release a clamped butt of the cigarette 41 so that said butt may be retrieved for smoking.
A wrist strap 57, preferably elastic, is suitably secured at its ends to the bottom 58 of the body 1 for attaching said body on a wrist or the like.
In using and operating my invention, the body 1 is fastened on the back of a wrist of one hand with its end 9 forming a front end adapted to 'face toward the other hand. This brings the flange 27 in position for sliding the drawer 23 out of the cigarette case so that cigarettes 26 may be conveniently removed from said drawer and the lighter removed for lighting a cigarette. Ashes and butts may be deposited in the ash tray 5 by opening the lid 11 sufficiently. When the tray is full, the ashes and butts may be disposed of by flicking the arm sidewise with the lid 11 unlatched for opening by such movement of the arm.
Since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A smokers compact for wearing on a wrist comprising a box body having an open top and forming an ash tray,
a lid hinged to said body for closing the top thereof, a cigarette extinguishing tube depending from said lid into the tray for insertion of a lighted end of a cigarette therethrough for extinguishing and depositing of ashes therefrom into the tray, and means for clamping the extinguished butt to said lid comprising a groove in said lid extending from one side of the tube, a bracket rising,
from said lid at the opposite side of said tube, a channeled finger hinged to said bracket to swing downwardly over the groove and tube to clamp the cigarette butt in the groove, said finger having a widened portion engaging said lid at opposite sides of the groove to limit downward swinging of said finger, said widened portion when said finger is swung downwardly covering said tube and holding said butt in position to act with the widened portion and said bracket for closing the upper end of the tube against the escape of ashes or sparks from the tray out of finger downwardly.
