SMOKER S APPLIANCE Filed Dec. 19. 1929 hattorney Patented Aug. 11, 1931 PATENT OFFI ROBERT CAMPBELL EVE, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA S'MOKER S APPLIANCE Application led December 19, 1929. Serial No. 415,276.
This invention relates to' improvements in accessories or appliances for the use of smokers.
The object of the invention is the provision '.5 of a smokers appliance, which is constituted primarily by a cigar and cigarette extinguisher mounted to move with the hinged door of 4a receiver or casing, and movable into the latter when not in use, the extinguisher having special non-spilling characteristics insuring against the loss or splashing of the extinguisher liquid incident to the movement of the door or the support to which the device is applied, but disposed for the convenient access of the user in completely extinguishing lighted cigarettes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an appliance of the character stated wherein the casing constitutes an enclosure for the extinguisher when the door thereof is closed, a tray being movably located in the casing for the reception of eX- tinguished cigars and cigarettes, the accumulation of the latter being capable of convenient periodic removal upon withdrawal of the tray.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a smokers appliance in which the various parts including the tray and ein `tinguisher are retained against loose vibratory movement as, for instance, when the vdevice is applied andsubjected to the movement of a motor vehicle or like moving suport.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an appliance which is capable of substantially universal use in connection with various articles of furniture including desks, tables and the like, as well as to the instrument boards of motor vehicles and which in addition to being highly ornamental and attractive in appearance without, however, being unnecessarily conspicuous, presents a high degree of practical utility and convenience to the smoker.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described in connection with the following speciiication and accompanying drawings, in which, 1
Figure l is a front elevation of the appliance applied to a suitable support, the door of the casing being shown in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the invention with the'door in open position.
Figures 3 and 4 are horizontal sectional views through the appliance showing the door in closed and open positions respectively.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the appliance, showing the support therefor in section.
Figure 6 is a detail section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail. the numeral 5 indicates the body of the casing provided with an open front and having the walls 6, 7 and S. At its open front, the casing is 70 providedV with an outstanding marginal flange 9 adapted to overlie and conceal the edge of an opening 10 provided in a suitable support 11 into which the body of the casing is introduced, the flange 9 being provided with perforations for receiving headed fasteners 12.
At one side of the opening in the front of the body 5, hinge lugs 13 are formed on the fla-nge 9 and receive a hinge pin 14 passing through the door 1,5 forming a closure for the open front of the body 5. The door 15 is of such dimensions as to snugly lit in a recess 16 provided in the body and is connected with springs 17, the tension of which serves to normally move the door t0 the open position illustrated in Figure 2 and 4, the opening movement of the door being arrested and limited by a resilient stop member 18 properly positioned on the support 11.
A keeper 19 is pivotally mounted at 2O to the exterior of the body 5 and is normally retained in locking position by the tension of a bow spring 21. The keeper 19 is provided with a finger piece 22 which passes forwardly through a. slot 23 provided in a flange 9, whereby the keeper may be convenently inanipulated. The rear part of the door 15 is provided with a lug 2a having a depending shoulder terminated by an inclined face lil adapted to engage and depress the angular part F of the keeper 19, which latter is engaged behind the shoulder by the action o" the spring 21 to lock the door in closed position.
In the form of the invention herein illustrated, the body 5 is of rectangular form and receives a tray 27 approximately corresponding in shape thereto. rlhe tray occupies the major portion of the lower part of the body, being supported upon the bottom thereof, and being engaged by a bow spring Q8, one terminal of which is fastened at 29 to an end wall 6. rl`he opposite extremity of the bow spring is in sliding contact with the inner face of said end Vall, while the prominent medial portion thereof bears against the tray Qi' to maintain the latter in position and preventtilt-ing or vilnfatory movement thereof, as for instance, when the position of the support 11 shifted. Y
The inside of the door 15 is provided with a resilient bracket 30 constituted by a split annular part embracing the base portion 31 of the extinguisher 32 provided with a peripheral flange abutting the annular member 30. The upper part of the non-spillable extinguisher 32 is provided with au intinned and depending flange terminating in an opening of less diameter than the distinguisher body, but sufficiently large to permit the insertion of the lighted end of a cigar or cigarette for the purpose of extinguishing the latter. The form and location of the flange is such as to prevent loss or splashing of the extinguishing' liquid contained therein incident to the movement of the door 15 or of the support to which the device is applied. The resiliency of the annular part of the bracket 30, however, develops sufficient gripping effeet to' retain the non-spillable extinguisher in position and at the same time permit convenient removal thereof when desired.
The non-spillable extinguisher 32 is of such dimensions, and so supported that when the door 15 is closed, it is accommodated in the space in the body 5 directly above the tray 2T, said. tray and extinguisher being thus disposed in compact superposed relation within the casing. However, when it is desired to use the appliance, the operator by a single manipulation of the finger piece 22 releases the keeper 19, permitting` the door 15 to be swung to open position under the influence of the springs 17, the movement thereof being` arrested by the resilient stop 1S. Due to the provision of the depending flange 34, the contents of the non-spillable extinguisher are prevented from splashing` or spilling during opening movement of the door or stoppage of the movement thereof, by engagement with the stop 18. As will be understood, water or any other suitable liquid may be introduced in the extinguisher for the purpose of extinguishing the lighted cigar or cigarette. With the door in open position as shown in Figures 9. and 4, the extinguisher 32 is wholly displaced from the casing 5 and the support 11 exposing the tray 27 for convenient access of the deposit of ashes resulting from the burning of the tobacco. Before discarding the stub of the cigar or cigarette, the burning end thereof is immersed in the extinguisher liquid and thereafter removed and deposited in the tray 27. Thereafter the door 15 is closed and locked, thus concealing and protecting the extinguisher and tray. As will be understood, the contents of the tray Q7 may be periodically emptied at convenience.
As stated, the invention may be applied to tables, desks and other articles of furniture, as well as to the interior of motor vehicles within convenient reach of the intended user and when so arranged provides a convenient, practical and ornamental appliance for the smoker.
That I claim is:
1. A. smokers appliance including a casing and a door hinged on a vertical. axis thereto, a non-spillalile liquid containing extinguisher carried by the door and movable therewith into and out of the casing. and a tray located in the casing for receiving ex-A tinguished cigars and cigarettes transferred from the extinguisher.
2. A smokers appliance including a casing and a door hinged on a vertical axis thereto, in ,ans to lock the door in closed position, spring means normally tending to open said door, a liquid containing extinguisher carried by the door and movable therewith into the casing, and a flange depending into the extinguisher acting to prevent spilling O1'l splashing of the contents thereof, and a tray located in the casing in a plane below the extinguisher for receiving extinguished cigars and cigarettes transferred thereto from the extinguisher.
3. A smokers appliance including a casingy and a door hinged thereto, a removable t-ray, and a non-spillable cigar and cigarette extinguisher mounted upon the casing and door, respectively and adapted when the door isv closed, to occupy superposed positions.
Ll. A smokers appliance including a casing and a door therefor, a cigarette andY ci gar extinguisher mounted on the door and movable into and out of the casing when the door is closed and opened, and a tray located in the casing for the reception of cigars and cigarettes which have been extinguished by the extinguisher.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
