Description

J. L. DUNNING.
MATCH SAFE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. a. 1909.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. DUNNING, OF CLAYTON, MISSOURI.
MATCH-SAFE.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. DUNNING, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Clayton, St. Louis county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in match safes and has for its object to provide a movable match receptacle supported in a casing, and a means whereby but one match can be removed at a time from the receptacle.
In the drawingsl*igure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. F ig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the match receptacle removed from the casing.
In the construction of my invention I provide an outer casing 5 composed of a rear wall 6 and two side walls 7 the outer edge 8 of the side walls 7 are bent at right angles so as to form a pocket and support-the match receptacle 9.
The casing 5 is arranged to be rigidly attached to an object or fastened in any dosirable manner to the wall.
The match receptacle comprises a front wall 10, side walls 11 and rear guides 12, all of said parts being formed integral and cut and shaped out of a single strip of material. The rear guides 12 have a portion of the material cut away, forming the slots 13 permitting the downwardly projecting ends of the guides to be bent inwardly toward the front wall 10 so that the ends 14 contact with the ends 15 of the front wall, yet allowing sufficient spring to permit the match to be removed from between the contacting edges. The movement is limited by means of inwardly bent flanges 16 which form a part of the side walls 11. The upper edge of the side walls 11 is bent forming the bead 17 which acts as a stop or support for the match receptacle and retains the same in position between the upper edges Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 6, 1909.
of the side walls 7 of the casing.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Serial No. 481,693.
The matches are placed in a horizontal position within the receptacle and access can be had to the same by inserting the fingers in the semi-circular opening 18 formed in the front wall of the casing, and when being drawn downwardly the match will be released from the contacting edges of the front wall and the spring end of the rear guides.
The front wall of the receptacle is also provided with an opening 19 so as to be able to observe the contents of the box or amount of matches located therein.
The essential feature of my invention is the arrangement of the match receptacle, the same being removable from the casing so that the matches can be inserted and the receptacle refilled and at the same time permit but one match to be released at a time.
The slots 13 are so arranged and of sullicient size as to allow the sulfur end of the match to rest therein and prevent the same from rubbing against the walls of the receptacle and becoming ignited.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is:
A match receptacle comprising an outer casing cut and bent out of a single strip of material; a removable match receptacle cut of a single strip of material bent forming side walls and rear guides and arranged to be supported in the outer casing, the bottom ends of the rear guides of the match receptacle cut and bent inwardly contacting with the lower edge of the front wall of the receptacle and arranged to sulliciently spread to permit the match to pass from the contacting edges, the side walls having flanges to contact with the rear guides limiting the spreading movement of the same, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
