MATCH-SAFE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
2 Patented June-19, =19oe.-1
Application filed February 20. 1906. Serial No. 302.079.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, GEORGE FRANCIS GAR- RITY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to match-safes, the object of the invention being to provide a safe having a plurality of rece tacles and adapted to be mainly constructe of paper or sheet metal in a simple and inexpensive manner and provided with means for supporting an igniting material, such as sandpaper, in such away as to permit of its ready renewal when occasion requires and to adapt it, if desired, to form a receptacle forburnt matches.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying ,dr'awings, in whichi A Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the safe is made. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the completed safe. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the safe with portions broken away. I
The safe comprises a back 1, rovided with any desired number of matcholding receptacles 2, two being shown in the present instance. The structure as a whole is made of pa er, sheet metal, or any other cheapmateria adapted to be .cut and bent into form. The device is preferably made from the form of blank shown in Fig. 1, in which the back is illustrated as being composed of a central sus' pending portion 3 and lateral extensions 4, the latter forming the rear walls of the said receptacles 2. In the blank each lateral extension 4 is continued to form portions 5, 6, and 7, respectively, adapted to be bent on the dotted division-lines to form the outer end-wall,.the front wall, and the inner end wall of the receptacle. The portion 6 is provided with a depending projection 8 to form the bottom of the receptacle, and the por tions 7 and 8 are respectively provided with tongues 9 and 10, the former adapted to be passed through slits 11 and clenched against the rear surface of theback 4 and the tongues o eitherbent into engagementfwith' the lower edge of the back 4 or passed through slits therein and clenched. The central portion 3 of the back has an upward extension 12, forming a suspending portion having an eye or aperture 13 to engage a fastening, and it is also provided with alower extension 14,
having side flanges 15 and a bottom flange 16. These flanges 15 and 16 are adapted to be bent over upon the front of the part 14 to form a guideway and confining members for the igniting material, which is preferably composed of a strip 17 of sandpaper, adapted to be applied and removed through the upper open end of the guideway formed by the side flanges and having its acting surface exposed for use through the space between the flanges.
- The construction thus provides a safe composed of a back having a central portion and match-receptacle located on opposite sides thereof, said central portion having an upwardly-extanding suspending member and a downwardly extending supporting 7 surface for the igniting material '17. This material 17 is ada ted to effect the instantaneous ignition of t e matchrubbed over the surface of the same and may be readily renewed whenever occasion requires. The construction furthermore provides for the convenient and inexpensive manufacture of the safe.
' The safe may be finished in any preferred manner to meet the taste or caprice of the manufacturer and demands of the trade.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A match-safe comprising a body formed from a single blank, said body comprising a back having a central portion and main lateral extensions, said central portion being formed with upwardly and'downwardly projecting suspending and igniter-carrying extensions, the latter being provided at its sides and lower edge with inturned confiningflanges, safe-forming extensions rojecting' from the main lateral extensions 0 the back, each comprising portions folded and bent to form the front, outer end inner end walls of a safe-body closed at back by the coacting main lateral extension, the outer longitudinal edges of the inner erid and bottomwalls of the-safe being provided with tongues interlocking With the back, whereby a pair of In testimony whereof I afiix my signature safes or receptacles are formed on opposite in presence of two Witnesses. sides of the central portion of the back, and
an igniting-strip upon the said igniter-carry- GEORGE FRANCIS GARRITY' ing extension removably held in theguide- Witnesses:
