Description

PATENTED JULY'28, 1908.

MATCH BOX. APPLICATION FILED JULY 13, 1907.
' I N VE N TOR LAar/ea W flerle B Y ma w/nvgssss ATTORNEYS enmew. OERTEL, OF NEW YORK, NY.
MATCH-Box.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented July 28, 1908.
' Application filed July 13, 1907. Serial No. 883,650.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LOHARLEs W. OERTEL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Match- Box, of which the following is'a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to match boxes made of a singlepie'ce of paper, .capable of being folded into a receptacle for holding loose matches.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved match box which is simple and compact in construction, more especially designed for pocket use, and arranged to permit ready access to the loose matches for convenient removal whenever it is desired to use the same.
The invention consists of novel features and parts. and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings" forming a art of this specification, in which similar 0 aracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a per ective view of the improvement closed; ig. 2- is a front view of the same open; Fig. 3 is an enlargedtransverse section of the same on the line 3.3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a face view of the blank of the match box.
The match box is made from a single piece or blank of sheet material, such as stlfl paper or the like, and the said single piece is formed and creased as illustrated in Fig. 4, to form a back A, from the u er and lower ends of which'extend the top lb and the bottom 0, and from the sides of the back A extend the sides D, D. From the top-B extends the cover E terminating in a locking tongue F, and from the bottom C extends a retaining fia ,G, and from the sides D, D extend the ont flaps H, H which overlap at the lower portions, the front flap H bein provided at its lower portion with aslit H gue H or engagement by a locking .ton formed on the lower portion of the other front-flap H. The upper arts of the front fla s H, H have u war y and outwardly indlined edges H, I.
Now in order to form the box from the piece-or blank asdescribed, the bottom C' is ent'up at right angles tothe back A and thenthe retaining fla G is bent u parallel to the back A, after W 'ch the side is bent over and the front flap H folded over the retaining flap G. The other side D is now bent over and the front flap H is folded over and its locking tongue H is engaged with the slit H to lock the front flaps in position, thus holding the retaining flap G in place. By the arrangement described a chamber is formed by the back A, the bottom-C, the re- 'tainingl flap G and the front flaps H and H,
ich chamber can now be readily filled andw with matches arranged one alongside the other, the depth of the chamber being more or less to accommodate one, two or more rows of matches, as described. By having the inclined edges H", H in the front fla s H, H convenient access is had to all t e matches.
When the chamber is filled the top B is bent over and the cover E swung downward to close the partly open front of the chamber, the cover being locked in a closed position by the operator tucking the locking tongue F betweenthe retaining flap G and the interlocked-lower portions of the front flaps H, H. The match box shown and described is very simple and com act in construction, and when the cover is 0 en convenient access is had to the mate es, as all the matches are more or less exposed and still securely held in place by the retaining flap G,
. the upper edge of which extends a short distance abovethe upper edge of the lowerinterlo'cked portions of the front flaps H, H.
An ignition strip I may be secured tothe,
inner face of the cover E, to allow'of igniting a removed match thereon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
' 1. A blank for match boxes, comprising a .the back and having frontflaps provided with inclined edges, one of said side flaps being provided with a slit and-the other with a tongue for engaging the slit, a retaining flap extending from the bottom and adapted to be arranged inside of the side flaps to form part of the front of the box, and a cover extending from the topand ada ted to overlap ortions of the said front aps when the lank is folded, the cover terminating in a locking tongue adapted to pass between the retaining fla and the sides.
2. A matc box comprising a chamber for the reception of the matches, the front of the chamber having a cut out portion in its upper part, the side walls of the cut out portion being inclined upwardly and outwardly to give access to all the matches in the chamber, a retaining flap in the rear of the lower portion of the front of the chamber, the said retaining flap extending a distance above the bottom edge of the said out out portion, and a cover for closing the said chamber and over lying the inclined ed es of the side walls of the cut out portion, t e cover terminating in 5 a locking tongue adapted to ass between the said retaining flap and the ower portion of the said front.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 0 two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES W. OEPTEL.
