Application February 11, 1936, Serial No. 63,369
. y 9 Claims. This invention relates to cartons and more particularly to paper cartons adapted to receive and which is adapted for dispensing sheet material,
such as wax paper.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank adapted to be,
folded to form a carton lembodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a strip of hard pressed cardboard adapted to be assembled with l the carton of the invention to adapt the same for l use as a dispensing package for sheet material,
such as wax paper;
of the blank folded and positioned in their carton forming positions; y
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing other portions of the blank folded and positioned in their carton forming positions;
Fig. 5 is aperspective view of the completed carton with the cover raised;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the completed carton with the :cover closed and having housed therewithin a; roll of sheet paper, such as wax paper; and
Fig. 'T is a sectional elevational view'of the cary ton as shown in Fig. 6.
Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understoodthat the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for thepurpose of description and not of limitation, and it vis not intended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art. A carton embodying the invention may be formed from a blank B of the general shape shown in Fig. 1. The blank B'is scored along the parallel pairs of lines I,' 2 2, 3 3, 4 4, |0 |0 and I and is also scored along the lines 5 5,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing portions (Cl. 20G-58) 6, 1, 8, 9 and |2 |2. The blank B, is cut along the lines '|5 |5, |6 |6, l1 |1 and |8 l8. 'Ihe blank B scored and cut along the lines above indicated provides portions 20, 2|, 22 and 23 adapted, when folded and positioned in carton forming position, to form the front wall, bottom wall, back wall and the top portion of the cover respectively. The portion 23 is provided with av projection 24 adapted to form the front Wall of the cover and is itself provided at each end with extensions 25 adapted to form the side portions of `the cover. The extensions 25 each carry a flap 26 having slots 21 and 21a. The portion 20 is provided with a projection 23 atea/ch end adapted to form the side or end walls of the carton. Each of the projections 28 are themselves provided With extensions 29 carrying tongues 30. The portion 22 is provided at each end with a ap 3| 'adapted to be folded against the outer surface ofthe side or end walls formed by the portions 28. The portion 2| is provided at each end with a projection 32 having an extension 33. The projections 32 are adapted to be folded against the outer surface of the ap's 3| and the projections 33 are adapted to be folded and positioned against the inner surface of the side walls formed by the portions 28. To form the carton the blank B is rst folded along the lines 8, 9, I, and and the portions 20, 2|, 22, 28 and 29 brought to thepositions indicated in Fig. 3. It will be noted that when these portions are brought to the posi'- tions indicated in Fig. 3, the portions 20, 2|, 22 and 28-28 form the front wall, bottom,'back wall and the side or end walls of the carton respectively and the portions 29 29 are positioned against the inner surface of the back wall. 'I'he blank is now folded along the lines 6, 4 4, 5 5 vand 1 and the portions 23, 24, 25-25 and 26-26 brought to the v positions indicated in Fig. 4. Thus, it will be noted that the portions 23, 24 and 25--25 form the top portion of the cover,the depending front of the cover and the depending sides of the cover respectively and the portions 2| 26 are brought to positions adjacent the inner surface of the top portion 23 of the cover. The blank is now folded along the lines |2 |2 and the tongues 30 inserted through the slots 21 of the flaps 26 as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. The blank is nowfolded along the lines 3 3 to bring the flaps 3| in engagement with the outer surface of the side or end Wall portions 28, and the blank is then folded along vthe lines 2 2 and lll-I0 to bring the projections 32-32 against the outer surface of thevaps 3| and to bring the 55 portions 28 as indicated in engagement with the inner surface of the front depending portion 24 of the cover, the tongues 3l) projecting between the portion 36 of thefstrip 35 and the top portion 23 of the cover of the carton. If desired, the portion 36 of the strip 35 may be provided with tabs 40 adapted to be inserted through the slots 21a. It will be noted that when the strip 35 is thus assembled with the cover the portion 31 thereof depends slightly below the lower edge of the depending front portion 24 of the cover as indicated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6. y Thus, when a roll iii! of sheet material, such as wax paper, is positioned within the carton so as to extend over lthe top of the front wall 20 and downwardly between the front wall 20 and the strip 35, the lower edge of the portion 31 of the strip 35 servesasv a cutting edge for cutting off a desired length of the sheetv material.
It will be noted that when the various portions of the blank B are folded into their carton forming positions the parts reinforce and' interlock With one another without necessitating the use of staples or glue to secure the parts together. Thus, the portions 29-29 are positioned in contact with the back wall 22 andthe tongues 30 are interlocked with the flaps 26-26 by passing through the slots 21 therein. In this way the depending side walls 25-25 and the depending front portion 24 ci the cover and the back wall 22, front wall 20 and the side or endl walls 28--28 are held securely in their respective positions. The projections 32 are heldin engagement with the flaps 3l by either thev depending side walls 25f25 of the cover, when the cover is closed, or by engagement of the ends of the roll 38 of the sheet mate-i" rial with the extensions 33-33. Furthermore, I
the cutting strip 35 of hard pressed cardboard is held in desired position by the flaps 26-26. The nsertion'of the tongues 30-30 between the portion 36 of the strip 35 and the portion 23 of the cover prevents displacement of the aps 26-26 and the depending front portion 24 and side portions 25-25 of the cover of the carton.
