CARTGN' Edith Purdum, Cincinnati, @hio Application April 5,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a carton and more iskpecially to a dispensing box for cereals or the e. The primary object of the invention is the g provision of a carton or box particularly adapted for holding cereals or other material, wherein the contents thereof can be dispensed at will and the lining of such carton or box functions at the pouring opening therein to enable the opening of its spout, thus obviating the breaking away of such carton or box at this point due to. rough handling of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a carton or box of this character, wherein the body thereof is of a kind-to assure its contents being dry. and sanitary, the contents being readily removed from the box by the pouring thereof through a discharge spout which is adapted to be opened and closed in a go convenient manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a carton or box of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in its purpose, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail,- illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton or box constructed in accordance with the invention showing the pouring or discharge spout in open position.
Figure 2 is a view showing the spout in closed position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the spout in open position and a portion of the lining of the carton or box broken away.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional View through the box or carton.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the box or' carton 5 is constructed in any desirable or well 60 known manner and is preferably made from paper stock, such as pasteboard or the like,
and can be of any size, shape or proportion adapted to the material tobe contained therein.
In this instance the carton or box is shown of rectangular shape.
On one end of the box or carton is arranged a pouring spout 6 which is integrally formed with the body-of the carton or boxv and the same swings on a crease line '7 transversely of the end, while as a part of this spout are side fragmentary vertical sectional 1933, Serial No. 664,653
flaps 8, these having the upper beveled edge portions 9 and such flaps are slidable between the body of the carton or box anda lining l0 preferably waxed paper. The spout 6 when closed lies in the plane of the end having the same and upon an outward pull upon this spout it will move to open position so that the contents of the box can .be discharged or delivered there- 'through.
The lining 10 is cut at the spout as at 11 to cover the inner face thereof and this portion 11 of said lining is extended without the spout to form a pull tab 12, the same being normally doubled on itself to lie flat against the outer face of the spout. On straightening the tab 12 by the hand of the user of the carton or box the spout 6 canbe pulled upon to open the same' from its normal closed position. Ihe tab is folded upon the fold lines 13 while the end of the box or carton carrying the spout has a guard ledge 15 overhanging the opening 15 communicative with the spout.
It is of course understood that the box or carton 5 in its body formation is sealed throughout the meeting edges and corners thereof so as to render the said carton or box airtight.
What is claimed is:
1. A carton including an end and a pouring spout adjacent thereto, said pouring spout forming a portion of one end, side flaps on the spout and movable into and without the carton, a lining fitted interiorly of the carton and having the side flaps movable between the same and opposite walls of the carton, and an extension cut from the lining and overlying the innerface of the spout and; projected a distance therefrom to provide a pulling tab.
2. A carton including an end and a pouring spout adjacent thereto, said pouring spout forming a portion of one end, side flaps on the spout and movable into and without the carton, a lining fitted interiorly of the carton and having the side flaps movable between the same and opposite walls of the carton, and an extension cut from the lining and overlying the inner face of the spout and projected a distance therefrom to provide a pulling tab, the said tab being folded on itself to lie fiat against the spout exteriorly thereof when the latter is closed.
