Application filed June 25, 1925. serial No. saao'z.
skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same. 7
This invention relatesto improvements in the manufacture of paper boxes, and more particularly to the construction of a box top, made to provide a means for receiving descriptive or decorative cards for designating different seasons and occasions, and as holidays and the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a box-top constructed in a manner adapted to receive descriptive or decorative cards, as for instance, when a holiday has just passed, and a dealer has a considerable stock of packages provided with these tops, he may, by merely withdrawin the cards, have the usual staple packa e 0 the manufacture 1mmediately ready fer sale without any loss or delay whatever.
A further object of this invention is to provide a construction for a box cover that will freely and positively allow descriptive or decorative cards to be inserted therem or removed therefrom. Paper boxes now in use having tops designed to carry cards are ineflicient owing to the fact that the cards are not easily inserted or removed, the guiding edges of the pocket for the cards are invariably obstruoted by particles of hardened glue or the like, and one of the prune objects of this invention is to eliminate this serious difiiculty.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1. illustrates a perspective view of the container showing the top sections in unassembled form slightly raised from the 4 main body ortion of the to and in their proper relatlve vertical positlorr thereto.
Fig. 2. represents a perspective View of the container with the top section raised and detached from two side edges.
Fig. 3. represents a sectional elevation view of the container, with top section raised on one edge.
Fig. 4. illustrates a plan view spread out of the covering for the top edges, sides and ends of the main body portions of the container.
Numeral 1, designates the main body y member of the container having four sides and bottom while the top or cover portion is adapted to slide in telescopic relation thereover, and is composed of a main frame 2, comprising four sides, and a top section 3. A layer 4 of suitable material, preferably paper, is adapted to be stretched over frame 2 and 3, and properly glued or otherwise thereto. The layer 4 is primarily shaped from a section of material approximately as disclosed in Fig. 4 having overlapping portions 5 for fitting in around the edges of the frame 2 and 3, the panel 6 of layer 4, may be suitably. supplied with illustrations, printed matter or otherwise as at 7, 8 or 9. A frame section 10 of cardboard or other suitable material, is adapted to be integrally attached to the top section 3 and 4, along three edges thereof, by means of a paper covering or other material for the frame 10, the frame covering being cut into roper form for overlapping three edges of t e top portion 3 and 4, as at 11, 12 and 13, the corresponding overlapping portion 14 is adapted to be folded over one outside edge of the frame as at 15, the inside edges of the frame covering are formed to allow overlaps as at 16, 17, 18 and 19, these overla s being approximately the width of the side portions of the frame, whiohmay be shaped in any suitable form. On securel fastening the overla ping portions of t e frame covering to t eir respective sections by means of glue or otherwise, a top or cover portion is formed having a pocket adapted to efliciently and with negligible friction receive a card 20. The ocket being formed by securely fastening t ree outside edges of the frame 10 to the top cover portions 3 and by means of overlaps 11, 12 and 13 of the covering material for the frame, the overlaps 16, 17, 18 and 19 are folded-underneath the inside edges of frame 10 and extending approximately the width of the frame sections, thereby allowing the card to be easily slipped into and out of the pocket withoutdanger of contacting with hardened portions of glue or fastening and the cover or Ii material that might, as in other constructions, lodge in the guides. The efiiciene of the ocket, entrance is greatly enhanced by the olding under and fastening of the overlap 14 to entering edge 15 of the frame 10.
In operation the box, container or ackage may be filled with ift articles, or ot erwise,
5 adapted to contain suitable information to indicate the nature of the gift articles the cover being provided with a pocket having an open face and a removable card inthe pocket containing information relative to some special occasion, the card when in place coverin the above suitable information whereby t e package may be sold as a gift package with reference to the specialoccasion with the card in place, and whereby the package may be sold as a standard staple package when the card is removed.
'What I claim is: v
1. A box cover havin side walls, end walls and a top, an open aced frame adapted to receive a card superimposed on the top, means for fastening the frame to the top along two side edges and one end thereby forming a pocket having an entrance at the open end, the means consisting of suitable covering material for the frame, cut to allow for overlap along the outside and inside edges of the frame, the outside overlaps being ada ted for securely fastening three outside e ges of the frame to the correspondin edges of the box cover.
2. A ox cover havin side walls, end walls and a top, an 0 en aced frame adapted to receive a car superimposed on the top, means for fastening the frame to the top along two side ed es and one end thereby forming a pocket aving an entrance at the open end, the means consisting of suitable covering material for the frame cut to allow for overlap along the outside and inside edges of the frame, the outside overlaps being adapted for securely fastening three outside edges of the frame to the corresponding ed es of the box cover, the remaining outsi e flap being turned and fastened over the edge of the frame at the ened to receive a ca mately trance to the pocket, thereby forming a finished pocket 0pening.-
3. A box cover havin side walls, end walls and a top, an'o en aced frame adaptsuperimposed on the top, means for fastening the frame to the top along two side ed es and one end thereby forming a pocket aving an entrance at the open end, the means consisting of suitable covering material for the frame cut to allow for overlap along the outside and inside edges of the frame, the outside overlaps bein ada ted for securely fastening three outside e ges of the frame to the corresponding edges of the box cover, the remaining outside flap being turned and fastened over the edge of the frame at the-entrance to the pocket, thereby forming a finished inside e es of the frame being approxie width of the frame sections, thereby allowing a maximum fastening surface and assuring the minimum amount of friction in inserting and removing the card from the pocket.
,4. A box 'cover havin side walls, end
, walls a top, an open aced frame adapted to receive a'card superimposed on the top, means for fastening the frame to the top along two side edges and one end thereby forming a ocket having an entrance at the open en the means consisting of suitable covering material for the frame cut to allow for overlap along the outside and inside edges of the frame, the outside overlaps being ada ted for securely fastening three outside e ges of the frame to the corresponding e ges of the box cover, the remaining outside flap being turned and fastened over the edge of the frame at the entrance to the pocket, thereby forming a finished pocket opening, means for forming side guides for the card free from obstruction caused by 1particles of box glue, consisting of the over a s along the under inside ed s of the frame eing approximately the wi t h of the frame section.
In testimon whereof'I aflixm si ature.
