.2 are formed in the blank. The portions 2 are connected by intermediate portions or Webs 3, 3 which are longitudinally scored in the middle, and likewise the portions 2 are connected by webs 4, 4 similarly scored.

It will be observed that the various parts of the blank hitherto referred to lie within a rectangle A B C D, and projecting beyond this rectangle are a plurality of flaps which, when the blank is assembled in the containing tray, are adapted to lie against the side and end walls thereof and to form one or more of the walls of eachl of the individual cells. For convenience, those flaps lying along the sides of the rectangle may be designated as 6, and 6', while those lying along the ends thereof may be designated as T, and 7. It will be further noted that each of these flaps vis connected with its adjacent portion 2, 2, as the case may be, and is defined therefrom by one of the scored lines to enable the flap to be readily bent at right angles thereto. n
Each of the webs 3, 3', 4 and 4 is provided at its inner end with a pair of inwardly directed, preferably substantially triangular tabs 10, and in like manner the flaps 7', 7 are each provided with a single similar tab 11. Additionally, the outermost of the flaps 6, 6, that is, the flaps nearest the ends of the rectangle, are provided on their inner ends with similar tabs 12, while the flaps 6, 6 adjacent the center of the rectangle are provided at each end with similar tabs designated as 13.
It will be observed that in the completed blank just described, each of the various parts, to wit, the portions 2,-. 2', the webs, the several flaps and the several tabs, are each defined from the adjacent portions of the blank by a scored line which enables the various parts to be readily bent into angular relation with their adjacent parts during the folding operation which is performed on the blank preparatory to assembling it in f the containing holder or tray.
The blank when folded, as hereinafter described, is adapted to be contained in a. tray or container 15, best shown in Fig. 2, which may be formed of cardboard in any suitable manner, as will be readily understood b v those familiar with the art. The form of tray illustrated in the drawing comprises a body 16, side walls 17 and end walls 1S formed integral with the bottom and maintained in vertical relation with respect thereto by small stays 19 glued in position on the exterior of the side and end walls and at the corners of the tray. However, the particular construction of the tray forms no part of the present invention and it may therefore be manufactured in any other suitable or convenient manner if desired.
After the blank has been cut and creased and the tray formed as hereinbefore dcscribed, the blank is folded along the scored lines in such manner that each web will form a wall or partition of double thickness in substantially vertical relation with the parts 2, 2, which operation, it will be observed, requires that the various portions 2, 2 be moved in two directions substantially normal to each other. At the same time the various tabs 10 are bent substantially at right angles to the several parts to which they are attached and tucked between the adjacent portions of the webs, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The various flaps G, 6', 7, 7 are now bent up to a vertical position and the tabs 11 bent at right angles to their adjacent flaps and tucked between the vertically positioned portions of the webs and the tabs12 and 13 bent at right angles to 'the flaps 6, 6 and similarly tucked between them, as clearly shown in Cig.' 2.
The blank is now in condition to be assembled in the tray or holder 15, in which it' may be secured, if desired, by a suitable adhesive, andl for the purpose'of giving a neat finish to the edges of the walls of the tray and adjacent flaps of the blank, a strip of paper 2() may be pasted over the edges and arranged to extend downwardly for a short distance over the exterior of the tray walls and the interiorl of the flaps, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. A strip or covering 21 of paper or other suitable material is now pasted entirely around the exterior of the tray and arranged to extend for a short distance over the bottom thereof, also as best shown in F ig. ,3, the upper edge of the strip 21 preferably terminating a short distance below the upper edges of the walls of the tray.
In order to enhance the appearance of the finished box, it is frequently desirable to define the extremities of the walls of the individual compartments with a color contrasting with the body of the box, and in the manufacture of boxes of this general character as at present conducted, this result is 'lili till naatyri'l etllected by utilizing colored paper when covering the rough edges of the Walls of the individual cells as hitherto described.
ln my improved box, however, this result may be much more eid'ectively and cheaply accomplished by4 printing on the blank, either'before or after the cutting and scoring operation, and before the blank is folded, suitable bands 2li of a contrasting color, these bands being so positioned that when the blank is foldedand assembled in the tray, they will lie along the folds formed in the several Webs connecting the portions 2, 2 and extend downwardly for a short distance on the Webs, thereby imparting a neat and attractive finish to the completed box, especially if the printed bands are arranged of such Width that they Will harmonize with the strip 20, as shown in lfig. lt will be understood that While l have herein illustrated and described one form of my invention and comprising' a box having six cells or compartments, ll do not thereby desire or intend to limit myself specifically thereto, as by'suitable modifications of the blank the box may be formed with any desired number of cells or compartments as may be required. Furthermore, while l have illustrated and described a preferred method of constructing the boX, other methods suitable for that purpose may be adopted ifdesired, and various changes and modifications made in the several parts when required tol adapt the invention to various conditions encountered. in practice and for other purposes, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined inthe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, l claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
