FOLDING BOX.
Application led July 14,
To all whom t may cm1/1era.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD E, PINKER ToN, a citizen of the United/States, and a resident of the city of `Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes and has for its object the provision of a simple construct-ion of this character whereby a strong, simple and efficient folding box may be provided.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan View of the blank from which the box is made.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same partially folded into box form.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the completed box, said section being taken substantially on the plane of the box indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 3, and v Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the box similar to Fig. 3 but showing the box arranged in` slightly different form.
The box has been illustrated in the drawings as resting upon a certain side thereof, and for convenience in description and for the sake of clearness, this side of the box is termed the bottom thereof, but it is to be understood that this term and the other terms employed in describing the box are purely reln ative and describe the box only when resting on said side as the bottom. Obviously the box may be turned to rest on any of its six sides, in which position the lowermost side would constitute the bottom of the box, under which circumstances the following description would not apply. However, it is a simple matter to arrange the box with the side thereof selected as the bottom in lowermost position, whereupon the following description applies. ln the form of construction as illustrated in the drawings the box is made of a single blank of suitable paper stock material comprising a bottom 6 having end walls 7 and 8 at its opposite'edges and side walls 1921. Serial No.4 484,608.
9 at the remaining edges. rlhe side walls 9 are provided with end flaps 10 to be ar ranged across the corresponding end of the box as shown. Each offthe side walls 9 is also provided with two inwardly extending flaps 11 and 12 separated from each other at a substantially central position of the box, the Haps 11 being'somewhat longer than the flaps 12 and arranged adjacent the end wall 7. The end wall 7 carries a flap 13 of a length to cover the Haps 11 in the box, and flap 13 is provided with an extension 14 of a length equalto the height of the box. Extension 14 is provided with a. further extension 15 adapted to be arranged within the box as shown, and extension 14 is also provided with a number of circular perforations 16 for a purpose to be mentioned hereafter. The end wall 8 is provided with, a cover flap 17 adapted to completely cover the box and an extension 18 extending across the end 7 thereof and a locking tongue 19 adapted and arranged to be inserted in a slit 2() provided at the juncture between end wall 7 and bottom 6 as shown.
In making up the box the side walls 9 are bent upwardly and flaps 10,11 and 12 bent inwardly as indicated in Fig. 2. Then end wall 7 isbent upwardly and flap 13 extended over the flaps 11, the extensions 14 and 15 being bent into the body of the box In the form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 the extension 14 is arranged as a central vertical partition, in which position the openings 16 serve as receiving openings for arl ticles such as h'airpins, crayons, or-the like. In the form illustrated in Fig. 5 both exten sions 14 and 15 are folded flat against the under sides of the flaps 11, whereupon the interior of the box is open and unobstructed and adapted to receive larger articles such as a package of hairpins, a pocket book, or
other similar and larger articles. In closing the box, end wall 8 is bent upwardly and cover flap 17 brought over the box, exten-v sion 18 extending across the end 7 thereof and tongue 19 being inserted in slit 20 as shown. By this arrangement a comparatively strong and highly eflicient box is formed from a single blank of material.
l/Vhile I have illustrated and described thel preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable o' variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. l. therefore, do not wish to be limited tothe precise detailsof the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications ascome within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding box comprising a bottom having side Walls at opposite edges thereof; flaps on said side wall extending inwardly therefrom, adjacent o-ne end of said box; an end wall adjacent said side wall flaps; and a flap on said adjacent end wall overlying said side wall flaps and having an extension folded aro-und said side Wall iiaps and inserted within the box, said inserted portion forming a partition in the box, substantially as described.
2. A folding bOX Comprising a bottom having side walls at opposite edges thereof; flaps on said side walls extending inwardly therefrom; an end wall at one end of said bottom; a flap' on said end wall overlying said side wall flaps and having an extension folded around said side wall fiaps and inserted within the box; a second end wall at the other end of said bottom; a cover flap onl said second end wall extending the full length of said box and covering the other end wall flap; and a locking tongue at the free edge of said cover iap, there being a slit in the end of the box to receive said tongue, substantially as described.
8. A folding box comprising a bottom having side walls at opposite edges thereof; flaps on said side walls extending inwardly therefrom, said flaps being located adjacent one end and extending substantially one half of the length of the box; an end wall at one end of said bottom adjacent said side wall flaps; and a Hap on said end wall overlying said side wall Haps and having an extension folded around said side wall flaps and inserted within the box, said inserted portion forming a central vertical partition in the box, substantially las described.
4. A folding box comprising a bottom having side Walls at opposite edges thereof; flaps on said side walls extending inwardly therefrom, saidllaps being located adjacent said endfwall and extending substantially one half of the length of the box; an end wall at one end of said bottom adjacent said side wall flaps; a flap on said end ivall f overlying said side wall flaps and having an extension folded around said side wall flaps and inserted within the box, said inserted portion forming a central vertical partition in the box; a second end wall at the other end of said bottom; a cover Hap on said second end wall; and a locking tongue at the free edge of said cover flap, there being a` slit in the box to receive said tongue, substantially as described.
5. A folding box comprising a\ bottom having side walls at opposite edges thereof; iaps on said side walls extending inwardly therefrom, there being two flaps on each side wall separated from each other at'substantially' the center of the wall; an end wall at one end of said bottom; a flap on said end wall overlying the adjacent pair of said side wall flaps and having an extension folded around said pair of side wall flaps and inserted within the box, said inserted portion forming a central vertical partition in the box and being perforated; a Second end wall at the other end of said bottom; a cover flap on said second end wall extending across the top of said box; an extension on said cover flap extending across the corresponding end of said box; and a locking tongue at the free edge of said' cover flap extension. there being a slit in thc box to receive said tongue, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence, of two subscribing witnesses.
