Description

Oct. 14, 1941. A. G. DAVIS BOX Filed June 21, 1940 |NVENTOR t 4,17avas.
BY ATTORNEYS I i I wH-h E5555 Patented Oct. 14, 1941 BOX Albert G. Davis, Newton Center, 11358., asalgnor to The Nevins-Church Press, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New Jersey Application June 21, 1940, Serial No. 341,625
This invention relates to paper, cardboard, or similar boxes of the folding type, and has for an' object to provide a construction which presents independent compartments readily accessible.
Another object of the invention is to provide a folding box provided at one end with a readily removable box formation.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a box having at one end a plurality of folding extensions and an auxiliary box interlocking therewith so as to be held in place therey.
In the accompanying drawing- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box disclosing an embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 1 approximately on the line 2-2;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the auxiliary box swung to an outer position;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through Fig. 2 approximately on the line 4-4;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the auxiliary box or compartment member shown in Figs. 2 and 3;
Fig. 6 isv a sectional view through Fig. 2 approximately on the line 8-B;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the box with the auxiliary box swung to an outer position;
Fig. 8 is a blank of the box body;
Fig. 9 is a blank of the auxiliary box.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, l indicates a bottom section or member and 2 a top section on member, while 3 and l indicate the side sections or members. The bottom member I is provided with an extension 5 which acts as an end to the box body. This extension has an opening 5 and a tab 1. The side members 3' and 4 are provided with extensions 8 and 9 formed, respectively, with a notch l and a slit ll. When the blank is folded or assembled the extensions 8 and 9 are folded over interiorly of the extension and interlocked as indicated in Fig. 2. The extension 5 is then folded over the interlocked members 8 and 9 and the tab 1 inserted. This will hold the parts in the desired removable position. It will be noted that the extensions 8 and 9 are each provided with a cutaway portion l2 so as to provide an open space in back of the aperture 5 when the extension 5 is folded. At the end opposite that carrying the extension 6, there is provided for the bottom I a holding extension l3 having a tab H. The top 2 is provided with a pivoted or swinging portion l5 that swings along the line IS. A locking tab l1 extends from the free edge of the portion l5. It will be observed that the material is cut at 24 and 25, and ends 26 and 21.
5 an auxiliary box is slid over the tab l4 and holding extension l3, as shown in Fig. 3. The auxiliary box 20 is then swung to the right, as shown in Fig. 3, until the edge 2| is beneath the top 2 at about the point or line 22, which is 10 slightly back of the pivot line It. The body of the box formed from the blank shown in Fig. 8 may be rectangular as shown in Fig. 1. The auxiliary box 20 is also preferably rectangular. This auxiliary box is provided with a bottom 23, sides The side is provided with a tab 28 which is glued to the interior surface of the end 21. The bottom of the auxiliary box is an extension from the side 24 and is provided with a rather wide tab 29 which overlaps the side 25 as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
This results in providing a passage 30 through which the extension l3 extends, as shown in Fig. 3. Also the tab ll extends into the passageway 30 so as to hold the portion i5 closed. It will 25 be noted that the portion [5 acts as a cover for 30 razor blades and the new or unused razor blades,
ar adapted to be inserted into the auxiliary box 20 after the same has been arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The old or used blades are adapted to be inserted through the slot of opening 5 into the compartment 3|.
From Fig. 5 it will be noted that the box 20 is provided with cutout portions 32 and 33 at two of its comers. This is in order that the edge 34 may readily slip beneath the top 2 so as to occupy the position shown in Fig. 2. When the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1 the box is ready for use.
After all the new blades hav been used. from the auxiliary box or container 20, the entire structure may be thrown away, or if, desired, the
end having the opening 6 may be opened and the old blades thrown away and a new supply provided for the auxiliary box 20.
I claim:
1. A box of the character described including a substantially rectangular box body having one end provided with a slot through which articles are adapted to be passed and a removable substantially rectangular auxiliary open-top box fitted in the opposite end of said body, said auxiliary box having overlapped portionspsaid body having a swinging portion acting as a top for said auxiliary box and a locking tab removably extending between'said lapped portions to hold said auxiliary box in place in said'body.
2. A box of the character described including a box body having top, bottom and side members and an end structure formed with an article-receiving opening, said body at the opposite end being provided with an extension from said bottom and a pivoted portion forming part of the top, said pivoted portion being separated at its sides from said side members and an opentop auxiliary box having means engaged by said extension for retaining said box within said body, said pivoted portion acting as a closure for said auxiliary box.
3. A box adapted to receiv and hold an auxiliary open-top box formed from a one-piece blank provided with a bottom section, a top section and a pair of side sections, one of the side sections connecting the top and bottom sections, said bottom at one end having an apertured end flap and at the other end a holding flap for said auxiliary box, said side sections having projections adapted to interlock and hold said flap in functioning position and said top section having a swinging portion at one end with its side edges free from said side sections, said swinging portion being positioned to function as a cover for said auxiliary box when the parts are inuse.
4. As a new article of manufacture in combination a substantially rectangular main box including a top, bottom and side members, said top member including an integrally and hingedly connected portion at one end provided with a tab on the free end thereohsaid bottom member having an extension which serves as a holding means; and an auxiliary box having an open top and a wall consisting of lapped portions, said auxiliary box being disposed between the side members of the main box with said'tab and extension engaged between said lapped portions for the purpose of closing the open top of the auxiliary box and also retaining the latter within said main box.
5. In combination a main box, and an auxiliary box, said main box including top and bottom walls, hingedly connected foldable end portions integral with said top and bottom walls respectively, said auxiliary box being disposable within said main box at the end thereof having said end portions, and said auxiliary box having overlapping portions between which said end portions extend for the purpose of retaining the auxiliary box within said main box.
6. In combination a main box," and an auxiliary box, said auxiliary box being interlocked within said main box by means of overlapped portions on the auxiliary box between which fold portions on the main box extend in overlapped relation.
7. In combination a main large box, and an auxiliary small box,said auxiliary boxibeing interlocked within said main box'bymeans of overlapped wall portions on the auxiliarybox between which fold portionson the main "box extend in overlapped relation;
