FOLDING CONTAINER Filed April 29, 1929 L- -YX "i ATTORNE Patented oci. 28 1930 EDWIN A. LEE, F FHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA FOLDING CONTAINER Application led April 29,
My invention relates toa new and useful folding container particularly adaptedfor packing, storing and displaying various goods such as stockings, linens, scarfs,
handkerchiefs and the like. f.
My invention further relates to a folding container of this character which is adapted to contain one or more units of the goods being displayed or stored and one wherein said goods, in addition to being carefully packed, is nevertheless easily and readily accessible.
My invention further relates to a container wherein the character of the goods may be 1.5 ascertained visually without the necessity of opening or unfolding the container or in any Way disturbing the goods packed therein. To the above ends my inventioncoiisists of a folding'container formed of a unitary integral blank comprising a substantially rectangular main body portion, relatively -short flaps integral with the short edges of said body portion, a relatively narrow flap integral with one of the long sides of said body portion, and a relatively wide Hap integral with the opposed long side of s aid bo'dy portion, said last mentioned flap being of a size substantially equal to that of said main body portion.
My invention further relates to a folding container of this general character, the main body portion of which is provided with an aperture through which the goods contained therein may be felt and seen without opening or unfolding said container.
My invention further consists of a folding container of the general character described formed of a blank, the main body portion of which is spaced from the juxtaposed fold- 40 ing iiaps by' pairs of parallel scorings which impart to the container a depth or height predetermined by the distance between said parallel scorings thus rendering my novel container adaptable for storing, packing and displaying one or more articles at will.
My invention further consists of a container of this general character wherein a thin transparent sheet is superimposed upon the apertured main body portion to. protect the goods contained therein and displayed 1929. Serial No. 358,778.
through said aperture froni dust and moisture, and from being handled by the customers. t
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying diawings..fornis thereof which are at present preferred by me. since thesaine has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that iiiy iiivention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instruinentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure l, represents a top plan view of the blank from which my novel folding container is formed.
Figure 2, represents a longitudinal sectional View of a folding container formed by folding the blank shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3, represents a transverse section of the saine.
Figure 4, re resents a section similar to that shown in 4igure 3 illustrating a inodi- 75 ied form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like parts, 1 designates a blank from which iny novel folding container is forined which comprises the main body portion 2, the end flaps 3, the
'relatively narrow side Hap 4 and the relatively wide side Hap 5, the inain body portion 2 is provided with the aperture 6 0f any desired size or contour withthe creases or scorings 7 and 8 which permit of the folding of tlhe end and side flaps 3, 4 and 5 respective y.
The fiaps 3, 4 and 5 are further provided with the scorings or creases 9 which in con- 90 .junction with the scorings 7 and 8 form side walls 10 which impart height or depth to the box or container formed when the blank 1 shown in Figure 1 is folded into the position seen in Figures 2 and 3. l1, 12 and 13 desig- 95 nate units of goods such as folded stockings, handkerchiefs, scarfs or the like which are superimposed in their folded condition upon the main body portion 2 of the blank before the folding of the side and end flaps 3, 4 and 10( 5. The stockin s 11, 12 and 13 can be seen or can be felt t iroiigh the bottom aperture 6 thereby eliminating the necessity of cornpletely unfolding or opening the container.
In Figure 4 I have shown a modified form of my invention wherein I interpose a transparent flexible sheet 14, of tissue paper, wax paper or the like, between the main body portion 2 of the container 1 and the contiguous goods 13 so that the color of said goods may be determined Without the necessity of opening or unfolding the container and so that said stockings may be protected from the atmosphere. The transparent sheet 1/1 may if desired be permanently secured to the body portioiiin any suitable manner.
It is to be noted that in forming my novel container I first fold the end flaps 3 and 4 inwardly over the body portion 2, to protect the goods 11, 12 and 13, then fold the wide flap which is of substantially the same size-as the main body portion 2 inwardly so that it forms a complete cover for the container.Y
Vhen it is desired to display the goods contained in my novel folding container, it is merely necessary to swing the wide iap 5, outwardly to expose to view both the color and the qualityvof the goods. By this construction it is unnecessar to disturb the folding of the goods being displayed and considerabletime is saved 1n the packing and unpacking of the goods.
It will also be seen that my novel container is considerably less expensive to produce than conventional boxes heretofore used which generally consist of a built up bottom body Y portion and a built up separate cover.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive reference being had tothe appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A. folding container of the character stated, formed of a blank comprising a substantially rectangularbody portion havin an inspection aperture in the body thereo end flaps integral with said body portion, there being pairs of parallel scorings near said body portion at the base of all the aps to permit of folding the latter over said body portion to form a well defined compartment having side and end Walls, a relatively narrow flap integral with one side of said body portion, there being a scoring in said body portion at the base of said narrow flap to permit of folding of said narrow flap over said body portion, an imperforate fiap opposite to said narrow flap and integral with the side of said body portion and of substantially the same size as the latter, there being a scoring in said body portion at the base of said imperforate flap to permit of folding the latter over the former to form said compartment, the scorings in all said side and end Haps being parallel to and spaced from said scorings in said body portion s o as to form said side and end Walls imparting height to said container when said flaps are folded over said body portion.
2. A folding container of the character stated, formed of a blank comprising a substantially rectangular body portion having an inspection aperture therein, end fla is integral with. said body portion there eing scorings in said body portion at the base of said flaps to permit of folding the latter over said body portion, a relaively narrow Hap integral with one side of said body portion, there bein a scoring in said body portion at the base o said narrow fiap to permit of folding of said narrow flap over said body portion, an imperforate flap oppositeto said narrow flap integral with the side of said body portion and of substantially the same size as the latter, there being a scoring iii said body portion at the base of said imperforate fiap to permit of folding the latter over the former scorings, there being scorings in said side and end flaps parallel to and spaced from the scorings in said body portion so as to form side and end walls to impart height to sai-d container and to form a well defined compartment when said flaps are folded over said body portion, and a transparent sheet superim sed upon said body portion, and postione interiorly thereof tocover said inspection opening therein.
