UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
WILLIAM CHARLES MILLER, OF MIDDLETOWN, OHIO, ASSIGN OR TO THE INTERSTATE FOLDING BOX COMPANY, OF MIDDLETOWN, OHIO.
PAPER FOLDING BOX.
Application filed October 8, 1924. Serial No. 742,351.
This invention relates to paper folding boxes, the improvements pertaining more especially to counter display boxes.
The objects of the invention are,-first, to provide a. display box of simple construction, second, a box which can be conveniently and effectively set-up from folded or knock-down form and, third, a box in which there is little or no waste of material from which the box is made.
In the accompanying drawings: Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the stock blanks from which the boxes are made in two forms;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the box closed;
Fig. 4 is sectional view of the box set-up;
Fig. 5 is an end view of the box set-up;
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate modifications of construction.
The two forms of blanks illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 are substantially identical,
except that one blank is for a box adapted to be set-up for display endwise, and the other for a box to be set-up sidewise. Thus a detailed description of but one blank will be sufiicient for an understanding of the novel features of construction.
The form shown in all the figures of the drawing except Fig. 2 is for a box to be set-up endwise,the blank being shown in duplicate to illustrate the manner of cutting the stock to prevent waste of material.
As here shown the box blank comprises a bottom portion 1, opposite side portions 2, ornamental side border or flap portions 3, a lid composed of portions 4, and 6, an end composed of portions 7, 8, 9 and 10, an opposite end composed of portions 11, 12 and 13, and a pedestal composed of portions 14, 15 and 16. To effect interlocking of the several parts one with another as the box is set-up, part 9 is provided with an irregular shaped slot or keeper 17, and with. an insert flap 18 adapted to interlock with slot 17; part 11 with a slot- 19, and part 12 with an insert flap 20 adapted to interlock with slot 19,-part 20 having a portion 21 adapted to be folded to permit the flap to enter slot 19, and to be then opened to retain the flap in the slot; part 14 is provided with a flap 16 adapted to co-act with a slot 22 in part 1,slot 22 being irregular shaped to form a part 23 which serves as an aid to retain flap 16 in interlocked relation with slot 22 by increasing the frictional contact therebetween; part 14 being further provided with the flaps which serve to stiffen the pedestal and in a measure to support the bottom of the box as the same is set up. The dotted lines a represent folding lines of the blank and the full lines --?2 severed portions to provide for setting thebox up.
' The portions of the box composed of parts 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 are more or less common in paper folding boxes and'no novelty is claimed with respect to the detail features thereof except as the same are included in the box unit as a whole. -The novel fea tures of the box consists of parts 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, and 14 and the detail features associated therewith which provide the lid, an end of the box and a pedestal for supporting the box at a suitable angle for displaying the contents thereof.
To this end, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5, part 13 forms the innermost part of the pedestal end of the box,and serves to reenforce the end of the box along its lower edge,part 12 being outermost and part 11 intermediate parts 12 and 13, parts 11 and 12 being interlocked one with the other by means of the flap and slot 19. With the end of the box thus formed the lid portion 4, 5, and 6 will be extended upward in longitudinal alignment with the body of the box,the lid being adapted to be folded on line -a at its middle portion to display an ornamental figure 24, severed from part 4 and adapted to extend upward in the plane of part 5. Part 14 will also be in longitudinal alignment with the body of the box, depending downward from end part 11, and adapted to be folded on line a at its middle portion to form a triangular shaped pedestal for the b0X,-the flap 16 being interlocked with slot 22 in the bottom part 1.
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate modifications of construction of the box set-up sidewise for display,-the modifications relating to a different arrangement for interlocking the ends of the box as shown in Fig. 6 and in a double pedestal arrangement as shown in Fig. 7. The modified end construction rep resents common practice, and the double pedestal arrangement is substantially the same as that described in connection with the single pedestal box.
From the detailed description and the dravgings my invention will be easily understoo I claim:
1. A. paper folding box including in combination, bottom, side and end portions, a lid extended from one of the end portions, a part extended from another of the end portions adapted to be shaped into a pedest-a] and turned under the box \Vhereby to support the box at an angle, and an extension of the bottom of the box, severed from the pedestal portion acting to close the lower edge of said end as the box is set up.
2. A paper folding box including in combination, bottom, side and end portions, one of the ends comprising extensions of the sides of the box, a lid attached to one of said extensions, an extension of the opposite side of the box adapted to be interlocked With said other end extension and having a portion adapted to be turned under the box and interlocked With the bottom to support the box at an angle, and an extension of the bottom of the box adapted to be turned inside said end and acting to close the lower edge of said end When the box is so adjusted.
3. A paper box comprising bottom and side portions, end portions extended from said side portions and folded at right angles thereto, a lid and display card portion extended from one of said end portions, a pedestal portion extended from the other end portion in the plane of the lid portion, an end closing portion extended from the bottom portion and severed from the ped estal portion. said portions being foldable one relative to another to effect the shape of the box and to support the box at an angle to display its contents.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature.
WILLIAM CHARLES MILLER.
