Description

Jan. 3l, 1933. c. sfA'NDREws HINGED CONTAINER Filed Jan. 8, 1931 Patented dan. 311, ,1933-v l i UNITED STATES omnia s. ANDREWS, or NORTH cHA'rTA'NooGA, 'rnNNEssnn HINGED CONTAINER Application led January 8, 1931. Serial No. 507,308.
The invention relates to containers ,and
more particularly to boxes with hinged covers.
4According to the invention, a box of the above kind is provided which is preferably made from two blanks. One blank is used to form the body whichmay be provided with side walls of double thickness. The other blank is used to form a cover which may,7 be
provided with a front wall and side walls of double thickness, its back wall being suitably glued to the back wall ofthe body. A box of this kind may have closed walls of quadruple thickness on three sides and a wall of triple thickness plus a layer of glue on the fourth side. Boxes of this kind are particularly well adapted to be used where large numbers of them are piled one on top of the other, such. as, for instance, for holding stockings and the like. v
The invention also consists `in certain new and original features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed. I
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, and the manner in which it may be carried out, may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which Fig. 1 represents a body blank; Fig. 2 represents a cover blank;
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the box assembled4 and in open position, with parts broken away to illustrate the construction; v
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken through the box;and A Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail. In the following description and in the claims parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar partsas the art will permitf Like reference characters in the several gures of the dra-wm 50 In the drawing accompanying anforniing denotelike parts part of v this s ecification, a practical oom- --mercial embo iment of the invention 'is shown, but as such illustration is 4primarily for purposes of disclosure, it will be understood thatthe st'qlzlcturemay be modified in various respects ithout departure from the broad spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter delned'and claimed.
Referring now-to the drawing, the body blank is illustrated in Fig. land is suitably scored along the dot and dash lines. It comprises a bottom wall l0, side walls 15 and 17 provided with liners 1 6 and 18. It also comprises a front wall 11 having a front liner .12 secured thereto and a back wall 13 with a back liner 14 secured thereto. Attaching tabs 19 are secured to front wall 11, and attaching tabs-2O to back Wall 13.
Similarly, in Fig. 2 the cover blank comprises a top wall 30, side walls and 37 withn zo liners 36 and 38. The blank also comprises afront wall 31 having a liner, 32 and a back wall 33. The walls 31 and 32 are4 provided with cut-out notches 140, making a circularhole,`as indicated.,` Tabs 39 are secured to 75 side walls 35 and 37 to hold the box in set-up condition. i
Referring now to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the body 1s set upwith its side walls 16 and 17, front wall 11 and back wall 13 in vertical position, and the tabs 19 and 20 are secured to the side walls -16 and 17 by glue or other adhesive material. The liners 12, 14, 16 and 18 are bent inside the box, as shown, and if desired they are also glued in position to their walls.
The cover is formed in a manner similar to the body. The side walls 35 and 37 and front wall 31 are first bent upwardly and tabs 39 are. suitably securedto the inner surface of front wall 31. The liners 32, 36 and 38 are bent down on the cover andl these may also be glued'in position to their walls 31, 35 and 37, respectively.
The cover, indicated by 40 in Fig. 3, is then attached to the body, indicated by 41, by ad: hesively securing the back wall 33 of the cover to the back wall 13 of the body by a layer of adhesive, denoted by 42. The score, indi-l cated by 43, between the top wall 30 and' back 10 wan se, provides a hinge on which the @over is swung.
board, plus a layer of glue which assists inv stifening this wall.
While this type of box may be used for containing almost anymaterial, itis well adapt-l ed orholding stockings. Stocking boxes usually are comparatively large in area and smallin height andV have l:separate covers.
The present box has an attached cover so that it cannot become separated from the body of the box whenl large numbers of boxes with different colors and sha/des of stockings and different sizes are opened simultaneously for customers.
- Furthermore, due to the large number of i thicknesses of paper board used in the walls this box will'stand up under a large pile of similar boxes, which is so necessary when used in certain lines of business where the boxes are kept in high stacks, such as in hosiery stores.
While certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described. and are pointed `out inc7 the annexedclaims, it-will be understood that various omissions, lsubstitutions and changes may be made by those skilled in the art Withoutldeparting from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is: 1. In a hinged box for stockings andthe like, a body of relatively thin paper board comprising a bottom wall of single thickness, side, back and front walls of double thickness, a cover of relatively thin paper board comprising a top wall of single thickness,
-` side and front walls of double thickness,
a back wall of single thickness adhesively secured to said body back Wall, wherebyA a box is provided which, when closed, has front and side walls of quadru le thickness and a back wall of triple .thic ness stifened by adhesive, said front and side walls telesc'o 4 ing throughout their entire height to provi e strength a ainst crushing when the container is close f 2. Ahinged box adapted. for stacking in high piles, said box including a one-piece body comprising a bottom wall, front, back andside walls, liners secured to said front, back and side walls, means holding said side walls to said front and back walls at the corners of the box, a one-piece cover comprising a top wall, front, back and side walls liners secured to the front and side wallso said cover, means holding said cover side walls to saidr cover 'front wall at the front corners of the 'over, said cover back wall being securedto the outside of said body back wall, whereby a box is provided which, when closed, has front and side walls of quadruple thickness and a back wall of triple thickness stiiened by adhesive, the junction at the top edge of said cover backQwall and top wall serving as a fixed hinge.
3. A hinged box adapted to support greatl weight without 'crushing or injurythereto, said box comprising a one-piece body comprising a bottom wall, front, back and sidel walls, liners integrally secured to the top edges of said front, back and side walls and `adhesively secured thereto, iaps integrally secured to said 'front fand back walls and adhesively secured to -said side walls, a one- Svi piece cover comprising a top wall, front, back l and side walls, liners integrally secured to the top edges of the front and side walls of said cover and adhesively secured thereto, flaps secured to said cover side walls and adhesively secured to said cover front wall, said cover back Wall being disposed outside of said body back wall and'adhesively secured thereto, whereby a box is provided which, when closed, has front and side walls of quadruple thickness and a back wall of triple thickness stiiened by adhesive.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal. v
